The Netherlands is rolling its own software and services after U.S. sanctions took Microsoft off the table When the U.S. imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, it also meant that its chief prosecutor lost access to Microsoft services, forcing the Dutch government to make alternative plans. #hardware https://www.tomshardware.com/software/the-netherlands-is-rolling-alternative-nixos-based-software-ecosystem-after-u-s-sanctions-on-icc-took-microsoft-off-the-table-trial-programs-running-now-first-release-expected-at-end-of-2027

My dad (who never asks for gifts) has made it known he wants a digital photo frame as a holiday gift this year. I'm doing my own research here, but I'd love recommendations if anyone has them! A couple key requirements:

  1. Must be functional without an Internet connection (by which I mean it must display and auto cycle through photos at a minimum; physical buttons or a touch screen would be ideal).

  2. High quality screen. Think like 1600x1200 on a 10-12" frame, with good color reproduction.

I have a budget of about $300, but I could go a bit higher for the perfect frame.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or suggestions here! As with anything else, the market is innundated with low quality crap and I'd really like to get him something decent.

My daughter who has schizophrenia and some paranoia bought an old and beat up Dell 960 desktop computer without a hard drive on eBay. She wants a legacy computer because she thinks it is more secure than a newer computer and it is pointless to try convincing her otherwise. After reseating the two loose memory cards, I was able to successfully boot up Linux Mint Cinnamon from a USB drive as shown in the attached image. I can access the Linux Mint menu using the Windows key, but for some reason a USB mouse is not working. I am going to try using a dedicated mouse port instead to see if that works. I have attached a photo of two unused cables that I assume are for the missing hard drive. Am I wrong? One of the cables is damaged and I may have to replace it. I am obviously not a hardware guy and am just stumbling my way through this. If I buy a 3.5 Dell SATA hard drive, can I expect it to plug and play (if I replace the damaged cable)? Or, is it more complicated than that? #Linux #Dell #Hardware #PC #CPU
