Evening trio - The crescent moon, Venus, and the Pleiades...in three views as twilight progresses.

First view captures the moon and Venus, but it was still too bright for the Pleiades. The band of orange-yellow twilight sky gives lots of contrast to the rest of the sky.

Second view is a close look at Venus and the moon. Earthshine is obvious on the rest of the moon's disk.

Third view captures the blue stars of the Pleiades as twilight gets darker.

#Comet C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) in early twilight, 16 April ... as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico at 9,400 feet.

This was taken on a fixed tripod. No star tracker. It's a stack of 71 2.5 second exposures, 135mm lens, APS-C camera.

In big binoculars the comet is a pretty sight, but not a "Great Comet" level of 'wow'. The tail is easily visible in binocs in a dark sky.

The comet is moving lower in the sky day by day, about 1.5 to 2 degrees at a time. In only a few days it'll be too low to observe in the morning sky. Several days later it will be visible in the evening sky and well placed for southern hemisphere observers.

The comet's tail is twisted and broken!

#Comet C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) in early morning twilight, 18 April ... as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico at 9,400 feet.

A comet's tail is a good indicator of the solar magnetic field environment. Changes in field strength and direction show up in the tail's shape.

The comet is now so low that I really can't capture it, except in bright twilight. Therefore, my goal this morning was to image the tail just before the beginning of morning twilight.

This was taken on a fixed tripod. No star tracker. It's a stack of 49 5-second exposures, 85mm lens, APS-C camera.

Grass fires raging in Nebraska.

This is a time-lapse sequence, in infrared, of the state of Nebraska. It's reverse polarity, so the hot fires are black, and high-altitude cold cirrus clouds are white.

The sequence starts in late morning of 12 March and continues to sunset of 13 March.

On the 12th the surface winds were very strong and drove the fires dozens of miles to the southeast. As sunset came, the wind direction changed and drove the fires to the south.

Overnight the winds were fairly light, so fire activity was low.

The morning of the 13th the winds picked up again, but in yet another direction and drove the fires to the north.

Finally, shortly before sunset the wind shifted yet again to drive the fires again to the southeast.

Windy weather and/or red flag conditions are forecast for the next two days.
