#ScribesAndMakers Aug 29 - Do you know what you wanted to be at 11?
A superhero, but in a fantasy world.
Hasn't changed much over the years, really
World-curious Canadian. Author of pulptastic fantasy, dark fantasy and even a bit of sci-fi-lite!
Mythology, folklore, indie games and horror movies are my jam, but this isn't a 'themed' account so I may talk about anything that's on my mind.

#ScribesAndMakers July 29: From soft to hard, where do your tastes fall on the Science Fiction scale?
Soft AF.
I'm talking Star Wars or even Flash Gordon soft.
I DO NOT CARE if the science makes sense, I just want to have a good time. Give me physics-defying spaceships, cool aliens and fun robots.
Sometimes it annoys me that us mastodon.social users are sometimes looked down on, then I see my follower list
Okay, I dunno what the devs of the Midnight Walk were smoking, but it's bonkers. A truly bizarre Tim-Burton-would-be-proud stop-motion horror/dark fantasy game, you are bringing fire to a dark world full of disembodied heads, alongside your sidekicks Potboy and your Baba Yaga-esque house Housey.
Not sure I *like* it, exactly... and it's well-received soundtrack is just droning discordant noise IMO... but I really respect how fascinatingly weird it is #gaming #indiegames #horrorgames
Everyone trash talks the internet but I remember the bleak pre-internet days when dogs were the only 'cool' animal, and really we have the internet to thank for the rightful dominance of cats.
😏
Humans will really talk about "invasive species" without irony.
FFS, it's 2026, let me skip your infodump drivel
Once again, I sit down at the park with several empty benches to either side of me.
One again, some old guy comes and sits right on the same bench beside me.
I need to develop a threatening aura
People are free to like whatever they like, but man, listening to culture war people is typically just bad for the brain.
Fantasy game dev: Alright, we're creating a fantasy world! Anything is possible! Our imagination is the only limit! What sort of creatures should we have in it?
Producer: fill it with wolves and spiders.
Dev: But it's *fantasy*! We could have ANYTHING!
Producer: y'know, you're right. Throw in some bears
Knowing that there are at least a decent percentage of readers who like to skip prologues, I'm tempted to name my chapters Prologue, Prologue 2, Prologue 3 and so forth and see how long it takes readers to realize they've been trolled.
If I had a dating profile, it would just say "I'd probably like your cat"
Man, I'd hate for a herbivorous hoofed animal to end up in my beef
I talk about myself so little at work that one of the younger guys learned that I had a family and said "I thought you were just an NPC that de-spawned after your shift."
Funny, but also like... thanks? 😅
Is there a story about a pig, or with a pig as a character, that does NOT at some point refer to them being bacon?
Food packages with a weird number of portions (5, 11 for instance) remind me of those shady online games where they sell you enough credit to buy what you want, but you have a little left over - but not enough to get a whole other item - so you have to buy more.
It's sneaky and I hate it, is what I'm saying.
I've been a Marvel fan since I was very small. But there's a sweet spot that I like. Somewhere between "Thanos can obliterate half the entire universe by snapping his fingers" and "Daredevil gets in a fight and spends the next three episodes in bed"
For a game with a Very Positive Steam rating, Savara kinda hits me as how NOT to do a roguelite. The route is unchanging, and short, with few enemy types. The bosses are just bigger versions of regular enemies. No surprises or variations.
That said, there is a decent skill tree, along with robust weapons and armor variety, but you'll probably be done and moved on before you unlock it all. Earnest enough little game that I won't remember exists in a few months.
Sometimes, I feel like people hate realism/pragmatism more than straight-up antagonism when you don't agree with them.
This is far and away my favorite band from Africa:
