The short-lived Gorsedda slate quarry. Massively capitalised in the late 1850s as the Bangor and Portmadoc Slate and Slate Slab Company, it closed by 1870. It's nature was best summarised by the words: "Everything that could facilitate the works was produced, nothing being wanted but the slate vein. There was no quarry there." #photography #slate #cymru #wales #aerialphotography

I wonder if there's anybody out there who might be visiting the National Archives, Kew in the next couple of weeks, or perhaps so close you could pop in without much bother? I'm in north Wales, and only need to look at one page from one document, the location of which within the library, even without help from staff, ought to be easy to find. I can't justify the high cost of my own in-person visit. If you can help, I can provide details of the 1898 document in question 🙏 #history #archives

Dear geologists: how do I summarise the processes leading to this pattern of colours in a slate bed in north Wales? Ignore the brown stuff on the right, which is just staining/biofilm Credit given in my voluntarily-written account of a drainage adit, which cuts through this. 🙏

@ephemeromorph@topspicy.social Sorry - I ought to have updated this. It happened that my son visited London and was able to find the relevant documents on Friday. My son said that, even in the shade, the heat radiating from the streets of London was "unbearable". I'll stick with cool north Wales, I think! Thanks for checking! 🙏

@pvonhellermannn@mastodon.green 'Mainstream' schools are 'difficult' because they only cater for the ordinary. Society misses out on very talented people that could take us to Lord knows where, were they given the kind of education and attention that is appropriate to their skills and needs. The tragedy of the 'can't be bothered' society.

@sjcooke66@mastodon.social Thanks. It's Theodore Craib's 1898 attempt at an itinerary of Edward I, held under the library catalogue, rather than the archival catalogue, and has the call number 920 EDW I. I'm after the exact name used for his location between June 09 and 29th, 1284. It probably says 'Baladeulyn' or close variant, but it may not. I am trying to see if my son can go there next week, but it's a bit hit-and-miss.

@daihard@sharkey.world EVs just shift the pollution away from roads and onto where the electricity is generated, still dominated by fossil fuels. The pollution EVs don't address, which is hardly trivial, is rubber particulates, containing countless toxic compounds, from tyre wear. https://www.iom3.org/resource/the-persistent-polymer-problem.html

The persistent polymer problem – tyre and road wear particles

Tyre and road wear particles are pervasive and reaching global waters. Sarah Morgan explores the scale of the issue and innovation to tackle it that is on the horizon.

#Geology help needed, please!

I'm writing up a visit to a 1903 abortive slate adit in north Wales, where the quarrymen were seeking a life independent of the oppressive Lord Penrhyn. Amongst the debris on the floor was the stone shown below.

If anyone can offer a description of it's geological history, I would like to include this in my write-up, with suitable credit, of course.

The stone's a few cm across.

@nocontexttrek@mastodon.social I always found the wild enthusiasm for plastering the US flag everywhere across the country unsettling. Whilst it seems to have been meant to signify patriotism, to the outsider, it had a distinctly fascistic flavour to it. Given what is happening in the US now, and how easily it has taken hold, I wonder if this observation wasn't wildly wrong.

@JohnSullivan Indeed. There is a real feeling of stress and anger amongst the general population out there at the moment and it's been building in the post-pandemic years. I've reached a point where I feel there is a real risk of some angry aggro in going for a walk and out in the car these days, so aggressive have people become. And that's for me, a 6'2" man living in rural Wales.

@junesim63 The UK is a basketcase. It doesn't care about national security. It only cares about continued donations to prop up so-called political parties who are actually just the puppets of the elite. It is perfectly happy to allow authoritarian regimes to infect democracy, because it sees this as offering benefits - mostly to keep the population under control. All whilst bleating 'democracy and freedoms'.
