#ScribesAndMakers 14 What's your favourite type of story setting? I write fantasy, so all my stories include magic in some way. Regarding setting, it's usually not entirely unlike Wales. The trilogy is a portal fantasy set in an alt-Wales. The cosy fantasy landscape is similar to Wales and the stories in the ideas file will be set in actual Wales, but with magic. I read quite widely, usually but not always fantasy, and all I ask is that the setting is believable and internally consistent.

We had a very spring-like day last week and I thought the weather was finally improving. We managed a walk in the forest yesterday and it was dry and even a bit sunny, but today we're back to deep gloom and drizzle.

But here are a couple of photos from the walk in the forest. The route we took went through some very mossy parts.

We also passed one of the wood ant nests. There wasn't much activity, but there were a few ants wandering around, but only on the nest itself.

@StriderLongshanks@mountains.social That's a very good argument for a word count. 🙂 The other times I've had to be careful about word count was when I was either a student or a tutor, doing or marking assignments. In that case the word count was an indication as to how much depth you were supposed to go into.

Taking advantage of the sunny weather, my husband and I did a walk near the coast, ending up at Fairbourne.

This is the view looking towards Barmouth.

Bob wythnos mae grŵp ohonon ni'n cyfarfod am sgwrs yn Gymraeg. Oedd rhywbeth diddorol i wylio wythnos ddiwetha' pan oedden ni yn y caffi. Dan ni'n eistedd i fyny'r grisiau achos mae mwy o ofod yno. Mae'r caffi tu ôl i'r fan gwyn ar y dde. Felly wnaethon ni fedri gweld yn glir y dyn ar y platfform yn gweithio ar rywbeth.

Doedden ni ddim yn hollol siŵr be yn union oedd o'n gwneud, trwsio'r simnai, 'fallai?

At the end of February I had added another 7835 words to the novel. I've kept up with the Get Your Words Out habit pledge (a yearly challenge on Dreamwidth and Discord) and either wrote or did something useful to progress the novel every day during the month.

The novel now stands at 89,400 words. I'm getting close to the end. I don't want the first draft to be too long, because my drafts grow during the revision phase as I add in more description and flesh out the bare bones scenes.

@nic@toot.wales @eclectech@things.uk @purplepadma@beige.party I'm also with you. If it's only a "holiday" if you go abroad, then I've only had a handful of "holidays" in my whole life. Of course in reality I've had many holidays in many parts of the UK. I've even holidayed abroad occasionally, but they were the exception, not the rule.

@suearcher @moonrabbit @helenclayton I did wonder if it was an attempt to simulate pregnancy, but as you say, it was far from realistic. The alternative is cannibalism! 😱

@JanPV@mastodon.social Usually, stripes like that are due to changing conditions that occurred while the sediment was deposited. For example more or less oxygen in the water. But for more detail, you need an actual geologist. I'm just married to one.

@nicw@toot.wales I was really glad to see that the meeting in Fairbourne was positive. The village suffered so much from lazy reporting about their future. So many articles were claiming that the village was doomed when that is very far from the truth.

#writersCoffeeClub 5. Do you track your word count? How? Why? I've always tracked word count. When I was writing and submitting short stories, there was usually a word limit. It was essential to know how long the story was. With novels, I used to record word count on a spreadsheet to track progress. I'd set a target of so many words per day. These days I don't need to, yWriter shows it automatically. Right now I'm revising, so word count isn't relevant. Instead I number of days worked.
