@mntmn@mastodon.social can someone tell linus that technology is not neutral? Too many people don't get that...
Am I just too far gone?

i believe this. #FOSS needs to be transformed away from open source, towards an open ethical license. Too many times have we seen people in the open source community try to stake out neutrality when we don't live in a world where we can be neutral.
So much writing has been done on the issues of neutrality in the face of oppression.
All this technology and for what? They've played us for fools. We must adapt open source to something better.

@FeralRobots@mastodon.social @julieofthespirits@kolektiva.social I think presumeably, Alphafold has already folded all known proteins, what 200,000,000 of them. So there's no where else to go.
The software for alphafold is ... available, but as it is, it's solved what it was suppose to do.
Still of course, I'm in agreement here, to hell with AI bros.

@ori The technology can't exist without the people who make it is exactly why I and many academics have noted for many years that technology is not neutral because it is embedded with our values.
We can critique it on that front on whether it is good or bad. Saying technology is not neutral highlights the people and society in which that technology is built in.
"The technology itself can't be evaluated morally without the context it exists in."
That's what it means to say tech isn't neutral

There's some things about Surf that I don't get. How does it function as a search for the Fediverse? Is it also an ActivityPub server in its own right? is it subscribed to a fediverse relay? These are details I do not have.
@surf@flipboard.social any comments?

I think one way it could work is through opt-in chains.
Secondary relay(SR) identifies as relay and makes request to primary relay(PR) to relay PR's content.
PR asks source instance (SI) for permission.
SI either grants permission or not.
If granted, PR grants permission to SR.
SR relays SI content via PR.

How do you build a show about the US military given the current war crimes of the US military?
Stargate as a show may be a product of its time, unfortunately. As much as I loved it.

Thanks!
So does that mean Surf can only see posts from Fediverse accounts that flipboard users have followed on fediverse.com and fediverse.social?
Calligrafae, I think if I'm not wrong, that should be where the notification ought to be. If you have request to follow enabled, then seeing if anyone follows you from flipboard's servers might be how you know. Correct me if I'm wrong, Mike. x

@mike@flipboard.social This is very cool! and I'll share it. The unfortunate thing about this is I won't see this post because I block threads. It would be neat to be on a separate activitypub server that is not threads.

@mike@flipboard.social @welshpixie@mastodon.art @greg@flipboard.social ah very cool! I'm glad.
I'm curious about the viability of just setting up an activitypub server.
I think Calligrafae, that might be a misunderstanding. Surf is a client that implements ActivityPub, ATProto and RSS.
You have to login with your fediverse and bluesky account in order to receive feeds I think.
https://www.theverge.com/tech/905929/flipboard-surf-fediverse-launch
also with mastodon especially, every mastodon account is also an rss feed which anyone can follow without notification.

@ori The example often given is, the atom bomb can only be created in a society that believes in its use. Another such society, constructed a different way, may not desire to make such a thing.
I believe it is only through capitalist means and ends that LLMs could ever be created in such a way that they do such extensive harm.
In a non-capitalist society, LLMs would have no value.

The problem of course as always is there's no way of enforcing bad actors from creating evil relays that pretend to be human accounts. But that's always been the case.

This can also be placed inside a closed registration-esque structure where only secondary relays which the primary relay has registered with can make the request to relay PR's content.
thereby reducing the number of requests to an SI to only SRs that are trusted by the PR.
But perhaps opt-in needs to be propagated further to individual user accounts.

@evan@cosocial.ca thanks, did you like the structure and design for consent chains I described?
I think if anything it has to be talked to with the folks who maintain relays, i don't know if all primary relays are made to the same spec that some group governs.

The other alternative is to delegate opt-in responsibilities to the primary relay.
Source Instances could set an option that says, you don't have to ask me for permission, I will leave it to you to decide whom to share my content with. Reducing the number of requests to users.
Or Source Instances could set a flag in the primary relay that says do not relay to secondary relays. (and don't ask me for permission because I won't ever grant it)

So how should Opt-in work with R2R?
Should it be that the source instance must explicitly register or give permission to the secondary relay?
Should it be the job of the primary relay to explicitly register with the secondary relay?
Should it be the job of the secondary relay to explicitly flag itself as a relay to the primary relay and send a relay request message to the primary relay?
How should the primary relay handle that permission?

@ori Yes but you have to have a society that would conceive to do that. A society that thinks it is okay to use the atom bomb.
As I said. A society that doesn't think it is okay to use the atom bomb, won't build it.
Technology embeds the values of the society that builds it.

I see. I could share the original 1970s paper if it helps. https://www.jstor.org/stable/27106634
As you know this is an area of continued research and recognition.
"Deciding that technology has inherent moral value outside of how people chose to use it makes it too easy to avoid reckoning with the social context of technology."
This doesn't make sense to me or what I think is meant by neutrality. It is because technology is made in the context of society that it can't be neutral.

@evan@cosocial.ca We know large language models can't exist in their current form without using copyrighted data.
How are you ensuring your model doesn't contain copy righted data?
andif you're going to use a model by one of the big tech providers, there's going to be the issue of complicity with what they're doing.
