@ptoothfish I've imagined a "Twilight Zone"-esque short about a man who every day wakes up in an alternate timeline where everything's almost the same except that all devices have completely different (often absurd) controls which he has to relearn every day. He ends up living in the Canadian wilderness in a log cabin he built himself.

@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social People hired to advise the 1% on how to survive a breakdown of civilization report having to give them some unwelcome news: in a breakdown of civilization, everything that made them wealthy and influential will vanish and suddenly they'll be nobodies sitting on a hoard of supplies they can't defend.

@xkcd@mastodon.com.br Would you have to hit the Earth exactly opposite of where the Yucatan peninsula is *now*, or what was opposite it 65Mya?

@reece I've never understood why it was the clocks that had to be changed instead of businesses and jobs having "summer" open hours and "winter" open hours.

@davidtheeviloverlord @cstross I never thought that if we ever had robots in our homes that we wouldn't own them ourselves, that they'd be spies and shills for the robot company.

@NicelyManifest@mastodon.social @sleepfreeparent@kolektiva.social @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk Chips could always have been expensive specialty items for niche applications like military or space. But the manufacturers knew that if they could mass produce them economically that they would more than make up on volume. Cheap chips created their own markets.

@petealexharris@mastodon.scot Hench the end user's programming dilemma, dating from the first availability of macro keys even on dumb terminals: "is it worth taking the trouble to automate this?"

@coreyspowell I'm really hoping that SpaceX's Starship becomes a reality because you could do some awesome science with a 150 ton payload and a 9 meter cargo bay.

@evildrganymede There was an episode in which Sheridan is time-skipped to a future where he and Delenn are Londo's prisoners on Centauri Prime, but despite their predicament Delenn tells Sheridan that their son is "safe". I took that to mean that he escaped the controller.

@JoeRess@fosstodon.org A lot of exposition that didn't make it onto the screen included that the Trade Federation's treaty would have virtually reduced Naboo to serfdom, including being able to dictate the planet's laws. That's a little more than "taxation"; more like the East India Company.

@michael_w_busch@mastodon.online @AndrewJonesSpace@universeodon.com @sundogplanets@mastodon.social At least SpaceX understands the importance of mitigating orbital debris and light pollution, and takes concrete steps to address this (not to mention not dropping stuff on populated areas). China's policies have always been "the needs of the state come first".

@NicelyManifest@mastodon.social @sleepfreeparent@kolektiva.social @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk TOO few, that's the problem: chip manufacture (and even more critically the literally unique facilities for creating the chip manufacturing machines) are essentially a global resource. Destroy them and you take away the capacity of the entire planet to create advanced chips. Something a techno-terrorist neoLuddite might aspire to do, but no partisan cause could benefit by it.
