PNG is back!

https://www.programmax.net/articles/png-is-back/ (by Chris Blume)

A new PNG spec was just released! […]

[…] After 20 years of stagnation, PNG is back with renewed vigor!

What's new?

* Proper HDR support (future‐proof, too!)

* Finally recognizes APNGs (animations!)

* Officially supports Exif data

* General tidying up—fixing errata, clarifications, etc.

@Huubje@ieji.de you mean https://www.benlandautaylor.com/p/the-fourth-american-republic ? Yeah, guess so. And yes, even the "silly" things can have a a long lasting impact. Albeit I'd say it slightly different: Even the things you organize that feel very small/minor to you can have a long lasting impact on communities and your relation to the humans in them.

@n8 if it helps you: I was born 1977 and definitely and positively remember Max Headroom, but I can't tell you how "big" / popular it was back then, sorry.

How to make me hate your website? Move the page scroll bar slightly to the left, as that breaks "move mouse cursor to the right of the screen blindly, hit button, move mouse downwards". Looking at you, #gitlab[1] (where I need the scroll bar often, as the pages for issues are really long, so using the scroll wheel is not really a option. RE: https://hachyderm.io/@robpike/116419397363442579 Here is another reason why I found this upsetting: That we all indirectly pay for this deliberate lack of security, as the money to reimburse customers in the end comes from our fees.

This is so refreshing and hilarious, I watched it twice – and at the same time makes me feel kinda sad, as it feels like a lot of openness, humour, and quick wit was lost in the last forty years.

@n8@mastodon.social yeah, I was trying to answer that, but then felt unsure and threw too much away, sorry. Everybody who had a TV back then had public broadcasting (ARD, ZDF, ...). But Max Headroom was shown on commercial/private broadcasting (SAT1 iirc; or was it RTL); and those only really came up during the mid/late 80s; I think that's when we (I come from a rural area) started to have those (first via antenna/later via satellite), so in the citys it might have been more popular. But according to wikipedia the show was first shown in 1989 anyway.

@siosm what are the highlights for a better tomorrow that Fedora 44 will bring for Atomic Desktops? Just asking out of curiosity (so feel free to ignore this, I won't mind!), as to me (who is mostly an outsider in that area) it feels like development of Fedora Atomic Desktops and the tech it builds upon slowed down. You mentioning two things being dropped (which is kinda boring) just contributed to that feeling… Or have I just not been looking at the right places to see the progress that has been made? I assume it's something like that. Or are there maybe less highlights than usual temporarily because people are busy with important and hard work at the lower stack? Bootc maybe?

@zhenech thx, interesting. Thing is: I still use the good old Microsoft Wheel Mouse USB PS/2 Compatible that doesn't offer this -- or is there some trick to make it work on Gnome Shell that works with all mice (from a quick search on the net it does not look like it)

@adamw@fosstodon.org yeah, granted, thx for mentioning it and sorry for omitting that. But well mesa, thunderbird and a lot of smaller packages have no such exception but are kinda rolling. That and the exceptions itself lead to a "neither fish nor fowl" picture from the outside. And to me it feels a bit like this is becoming a problem worth addressing sooner or later. @matttbe@fosstodon.org yeah, this isn't really something new. And while reading the post I like many times before actually wondered how much my go-to supermarket is actually using this or some other technique[1] to track me. [1] I guess these days video surveillance + AI might be or slowly become the preferred method; they could use wifi, too.

@pauldoo@mastodon.scot @adamw@fosstodon.org @doti@pl.catboyindustries.co ohh, wasn't aware of that, interesting, thx! But I guess in the end that and the "sometimes" in your sentence contribute to the "neither fish nor fowl" aspect I mentioned initially that makes it hard for outsiders to understand what to expect.

@doti@pl.catboyindustries.co I don't think using "they" is helpful here. Fedora has a policy, that says: "As a result, we should avoid major updates of packages within a stable release. Updates should aim to fix bugs, and not introduce features, particularly when those features would materially affect the user or developer experience." – https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fesco/Updates_Policy/ But the maintainers for some packages do not follow it – often for good reasons I'd say. And that leads to a odd mix for Fedora as a whole.
