Baking egg shells, as one does. For most of my life I added these to holes dug for tomatoes (because Mom), but I've since learned that that has no effect at all because the calcium carbonate doesn't really dissociate in real time unless you dose it with acids. Same reason I've stopped adding them to the compost. I'm going to grind them up and offer to local birds (I don't have chickens anymore). #CalciumCarbonate #eggs #eggshells #birds #calcium #calcite #chemistry #compost #tomatoes

I occasionally buy frozen food which is delivered in biodegradable packaging - sheepswool insulation in a compostable "plastic" bag. I've been putting both on my compost heap as instructed. Today I started digging out compost from the old heap (I have a two heap rotation) and some of that packaging is still very much intact. I just fling it in the new heap for a second go, but is there any way to make it rot faster? #Garden #Compost

How to help your garden withstand #ClimateChange#HealthySoils and diverse, perennial plants can help your garden beds survive #ExtremeWeather like #floods and #droughts. March 13, 2026 "The days are getting longer, and spring is around the corner. For many home gardeners, it’s a time of hope and anticipation. "So it’s the perfect time to plan how to help your flower beds thrive as climate change brings more extreme and unpredictable weather. "Marsden: 'Flooding, droughts, heat, cold, all the extreme weather we’re seeing is going to impact plants.' "That’s Christy Marsden of the University of Minnesota #ClimateAdaptation Partnership. "She says one of the most important things you can do is get your soil tested and then take steps to improve your soil health – for example, by adding #compost. Healthier soil retains more water during droughts, and it’s less likely to erode during heavy storms. "Marsden also suggests growing a wider mix of flowers than you might have grown before, with varieties that thrive in a range of conditions. "And she recommends relying more on perennial plants, which come back every year, and less on annuals. Marsden: “Perennials are more able to withstand some of those extremes because they have deeper roots. They’re more established.” "So while climate change is a challenge, she says by being flexible and trying new things, you can still grow a beautiful garden in a warming world." Mastodoners, ayer fui a sacar #compost y me encontré algo que no había visto nunca. El compost del fondo era una especie de harina o café muy molido. Muy seco porque con la que nos está cayendo está todo muy seco pero excesivamente fino. Pensé que era por culpa de algún hormiguero pero lo pensé por intuición jardinera, sin ningun dato. Os pongo fotos. ¿Alguna idea? #plantodon#jardín#garden#huertourbano#patioandaluz

@seedsignal@mastodon.social That's true, but an increasing number of manufacturers now make biodegradable #teabags, free of #microplastics, and those are what we buy. Even cheapo supermarket teabags are often biodegradable these days. I like them because I can chuck them into the #compost bin and avoid landfill. The easiest way to reduce exposure to microplastics (launching off at a complete tangent here) is to avoid tumble-drying synthetic clothes. @celesteh@hachyderm.io @badambassador@social.vivaldi.net @fesshole@mastodon.social

The hot compost pile was at 66°C/151F today so it’s had three days over 65°C. Two days at that temperature is sufficient to kill weed seeds and pathogens. 10 litres of rainwater and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) diluted 1:1000 was added to the pile. The pile had its first turn, outside to in. Within an hour of turning it had heated up from 53°C/137F to 59°C/138F. The pile should remain above 55°C/131F for the next three days when it will be turned again. #Compost #Composting #SolarPunkSunday

@Broadfork@mastodon.green The May 5th compost report is eventful. Green manure clippings were harvested from the raspberry area, and spread on the compost. The compost temperature as we start is a few degrees warmer than the nodig garden. This is 63 F (17 C). The whole of the pile was flipped from right to left. The runner ducks help. The overnight lows are around freezing. #compost, #minnesota, #Zone4b, #ducksofmastadon,

April 30, 2026. Gardening journal. Thank you to the soil. The planned garden planting includes beans, beets, and chard. The best of the Hidatsa Shield beans will be planted. The biggest Hidatsa Shield can be sorted by hand and eye. The seeds for the beets, Arikara Yellow bean, and Cherokee Trail of Tears bean are from Seed Savers Exchange. The soil temperature is 11 Celsius. The frost warnings are for two more nights. #minnesota, #nodig , #zone4b, #indigenous, #growyourown, #gardening, #compost

@Broadfork@mastodon.green And the nodig and compost top dressing methods are sustainable gardening methods! Our compost still has a frozen core. #nodig, #compost.
