RE: https://social.heise.de/@heiseonlineenglish/116914138856256964 Part of me is thrilled that Wall Street is noticing how bad the financials are. Part of me is dreading living through a catastrophic financial collapse.

@geekysteven@beige.party And basically the exact same kind of crystal that we use to steal energy from outer space, we can also use to shoot out beams of light, or do math. And by "math," I mean if you etch small enough patterns in the crystals, and feed it the right arcane set of instructions in a strange language, you can make it do so much math that it's a game that shows you an imaginary world.

@artemis @eestileib The Pope is technically a foreign head of state. And Americans who are not Catholic or even Christian are cheering on the theocratic head of a foreign state when the POTUS disagrees with him.

@xgranade @zkat Some of those people fall down a real rabbit hole of an LLM telling them "that's a great idea!" every day, and they just lose the ability to handle normal interactions that aren't at least that positive in every response.

@lowqualityfacts This is why the military has to secretly buy normal commercial grade anti tank mines with a fake non military ID like the rest of us. Military grade anti tank mines that stay intact when run over by a tank turned out not to be worth the price premium of buying military grade equipment.

@Chip_Unicorn I've been saying for a while that spamming out a bunch of extra code and complexity that nobody wrote is gonna reach a tipping point where it will become impossible for humans to ever unwind it, and that's scary. I think I am in the last generation of humans that understood what computers were doing.

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social Honestly, as pessimistic as I was, "Meta" threw so much money and reputation at metaverse I honestly thought something permanent would come out of it even if it was still just a token executive toy VRML chat app just to keep the boss happy.

If something goes wrong with today's Artemis launch, the headlines around it will all be the dumbest April fools crap, and nobody will even know it happened. It'll just look like one of the dumbass gags was in poor taste.

@gloriouscow @argv_minus_one The lowest spec PC at launch didn't even have floppy drives. In 1981, that was still a credible microcomputer. Needed to upgrade to at least 32 K of RAM to get supported disk drives and DOS. The expectations around a minimum viable product in those days were still bare minimal.

@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io @MuseumShuffle@mastodon.social Or legally change your name to a gamer tag style name like Christoph xX_Wu|69°420_Xx Just don't try to use a three character name like Wu吴. Cuz obviously no form on the Internet would allow that sort of character as a part of somebody's name.

While roided up ICE goons are grinding their teeth at airports looking for an excuse to hurt somebody and passengers are pissed off and TSA isn't getting paid, a secret service agent decided to shoot himself at an airport. Frankly it seems like dumb luck that a random gunshot going off didn't escalate into a horrific miscommunication and over-reaction.

It's always funny to run across this sort of thing in the current version of software. It does no real harm, but it's a reminder of just how much of modern tech stacks secretly hasn't been touched in decades.

Support for building on Irix 6.5 is documented as "deprecared" but not yet removed. So I guess we are still in the Irix transition period. (Irix 6 is from the mid 90's, for those too young to recognize the OS's name.)

In a discussion of criticisms of Python as a development platform I went with "Python only eat hot chip and lie" and the more I think about it, I really stand behind "Python only eat hot chip and lie" as a solid analysis.

@NewtonMark@eigenmagic.net FWIW Slack has always considered chat history a strategic asset. They use "restore your old chats" as a selling point for upgrading from free to paid accounts because they've always considered it worth it to keep everything, even for zero revenue accounts. I think a lot of people just refused to admit what that meant from the beginning. Slack was always looking to exploit that strategic asset in the long term. And frankly pretty openly. No on prem private offering either.

@prism@infosec.exchange @jalefkowit@vmst.io My proposal has been that every president elected with a popular majority gets to appoint somebody, and the court can grow unbounded with no fixed number of seats. Just a minimum size of like five. That would prevent it from getting stuck in any particular mide for a generation.
