@bazkie@beige.party @nixCraft@mastodon.social oh we used to use the most AWFUL and offensive language for testing errors and alerts. Was once rushed to push a change to a client and somehow something possessed me to use “bing bong” instead of unrepeatable language. Got an email from the client asking about the “helpful bing bong alert”. Never used stupid language in testing stuff again 😅😅

@mauro@mograph.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social Absolutely. But when companies take "full advantage" of AI LLMs the number of "tokens" they end up burning through becomes monstrously expensive. We all know the story of the company that didn't limit their staff's usage and got a half a million dollar bill for a month or something. It's definitely not going to work out much cheaper. Cost I don't think it's the benefit. Maybe it's the perceived control vs fleshy sacks prone to independent thought

@AndyGER @mastodonmigration Right, however as the other person who’s since blocked you noted you’re trying to force that debate into a thread / space that it’s nothing to do with. That’s unlikely to get you in front of the people up for a good-faith conversation on the topic and comes off as combative and / or entitled so becomes something of a self-fulfilling gripe.

@frang @danyork I agree with the sentiment BUT do consider that tech like this is utterly *transformative* for those with visual impairments. Was speaking with a guy the other day with a form of macular degeneration and it had given him so much. Not that that’s why they exist, but let’s not be ignorant of the minority for which these can be incredible. Now if only we could get the tech from places that aren’t abusive of the data collected..

This has blown into something out of proportion and you’re actively looking for reasons to be argumentative. Signal isn’t for you - that’s ok. Choice is good.

They’re not out to attack users here and if a user can give Signal plausible deniability of their location via a VPN I strongly suspect they’ll go with it. I may well be disproven as well of course!

@AndyGER Observation: you came claiming to want a debate. I remained civil and engaged in such. You didn’t like what I said so shut down the conversation. Ergo you were not here for a good faith debate and that, sir, is why you keep getting blocked 😉 this space is no more toxic than any other and has much better wellbeing controls and the decentralised structure also allows for much safer spaces. As we’re out of the realm of good faith chatting I’ll round off with this: you are the toxicity 😊🔇

And that’s OK. That’s the exact freedom of fedi. What sort of social network is this? It’s whatever each user wants it to be. Fedi is open and free, people can take or leave it. I find value in it, others find centralised spaces suit them better. Choice is good. But if you’re finding you get a lot of blocks and account bans the issue is likely your conduct, which I think you know and try to goad folk into arguments, and / or finding the instance that fits your personality more which may be niche

@raymaccarthy@mastodon.ie @mjdxp@labyrinth.zone @nixCraft@mastodon.social It’s still just chatgpt or mistral or Claude etc depending on the model you chose. But my point is if someone’s going to use AI they’re better off using DDG’s gateway than going direct. It’s still drivel, of course, but choice remains a good thing and giving people a route to play with LLMs without signing their digital life away isn’t a terrible idea.

@mjdxp@labyrinth.zone @nixCraft@mastodon.social I’d assume for the choice. AI exists and, until that sucker of a bubble bursts, is here for a while. DDG at least offer a way to use some LLMs with a level of privacy otherwise unavailable. Not everyone has the “no, nay, never!” take on AI (understandable as it is) so offering a way to limit how training matter is given to them and to not have it linked to yourself has merit.

@really_idk@mastodon.social @OpenMediaOrg@mastodon.social unlikely but I’d expect they *would* geofence the service. Essentially blocking their service from operating anywhere with a Canadian IP. And yes you’d likely be able to work around that with a decent VPN, but that’s not what non-technical folk are likely to do.

I maintain I’ll not use LLMs / AIs for anything creative. But I’ll admit when I use them like Picard uses Computer in Star Trek, asking for information and analysis they’re very, very, useful. Well, Claude is anyway. I’m not so sure about ChatGPT

@B22_SSS @frang @danyork kinda - it says to ask before taking pictures (absolutely right) but still a hard no on smart glasses, which I totally get. Of course if they had “except for those with visual impairments” suddenly everyone would claim they’re blind and asking people to prove it is wobbly ground(!). As I say, I just hope the pioneering of the tech can move into a space where it can be genuinely helpful to people rather than make glorious stakeholder profit 😒

@AndyGER@mastodon.social @juergen_hubert@mementomori.social The evidence of your actions contradicts that Or at least betrays an absence of empathy for those who are not here for “debate” but rather for the entirely valid reason of finding a community. Many marginalised groups need that and find great benefit it in but are also often victims of attacks from individuals or particular instances. Why should they not be able to have a safe space? You can have your debates, they can have safe spaces & neither needs to impact the other

@nazokiyoubinbou @Gammitin It was great, if niche. Folk kept comparing it to CD when it wasn't intended to replace that. Compared to the cassette tapes it was really superseding it was basically all the benefits of cd (track skipping, track names etc) with much better audio quality than tape, but not as good as cd. For portability it was a great trade-off

RE: @pickr@mastodon.social

The solution is clear: don’t use over-engineered convoluted music streaming platforms like Spotify.

Spotify got themselves to a point of being basically perfect then, against all sense or logic, carried on “developing”.

Apple Music, at least when I was last using it a year or so back, in comparison is just music and minimal faff or “feeds” or other nonsense that gets in the way of the music.

A California law that prohibits teens from receiving recommended social media content from other social media users violates their First Amendment rights, EFF argued this week. The case, Meta v. Bonta, challenges SB 976, which requires that teen social media users get their parents’ permission...

@nazokiyoubinbou @Gammitin Yeah ATRAC3 was when MD picked up the traction it did. Was at least as good quality as your average MP3 of the era, and absolutely good enough for most people's on-the-go needs. Again considering it was competing with cassette rather than CD it was more than good enough heh. I really wanted MDs to be used more as data discs too.. they were miles better and more robust that a floppy or zip disc and hold round 150mb or so
