@fallenhitokiri@social.screamingatmyscreen.com I'm all for a good study, but it reads like taking @treyhunner@mastodon.social's https://whereabouts.earth/daily/ app, adding an AI mode where you ask people to use the tool, but you give them wrong answers on purpose for your study when you know the tool will mostly give the wrong answer. I agree on narrative, but I fail to see "research" 😬

@paka@mastodon.scot @fallenhitokiri@social.screamingatmyscreen.com Seems like a bad study if only 44% can get it correct with or without LLMs. Especially if you tell them to use a bad model you know will fail on subjects they know nothing about. Paying them incentivized them to care slightly more but clearly not enough to abandon the tool you asked them to use. 😬

🎉 Kudos to @d@social.dryan.com for spearheading this initiative and to our Django CoC WG members. It took a little over a year, but the lion's share of the work was over the last six months.

👏 Great job!

🤔 I'm not sure why I never did this sooner, but I started adding a doctor.py script in almost all of my projects.

✨ This can be a Django management command, but commonly a Typer/Click sub-command which does a quick sanity/config check that everything is wired up.

🔥 It has saved me hours while troubleshooting dev and production environments over the last few weeks.

✅ I even noticed our ops starting to use it and post the output as proof of work, which saves everyone time.

@adamghill@indieweb.social @josh@social.joshthomas.dev I like Django Models (over everything else) but they have started to show their age compared to the world of Python Types that more and more libraries use; whereas, Django Models feels frozen in time.

@freakboy3742@cloudisland.nz I agree that it has nothing to do with retro computing. TUI tooling has gotten really good, and no one has figured out a GUI pattern that works with how many of us drive LLMs. Eventually, a pattern will emerge, and it will be obvious what that looks like, but everything either resembled an IDE or an Email app, and we don't want or need that. There's a huge architectural difference, too. Many of us are running a TUI remotely, so it stays persistent, and we can be mobile.

I'm printing the main base in black ABS to minimize heat and warping. I have gray and orange, which I might use for some of the smaller parts.

@fancysandwiches@neuromatch.social Not to veer too far off-topic, but I bought a PS5 motherboard + GPU combo (Asrock BC-250) for $150 on eBay last week and spent $50 on a power supply to have a working Steam Machine running Bazite. I'm only a day into it, but it's way better than my Steak Deck was (which is now broken.)

I received at least 12 emails (not counting notifications) from our school this week, and of the FIVE I received on Tuesday, I missed one sentence: my oldest is being given an award at 9 am tomorrow.

I don't think people realize the wall of noise parents receive PER child PER week.

I was already debating giving one of my Clankers it's own email account (read-only) but this is probably going to be what drives me over the edge.

@markwalker@fosstodon.org Nice writeup. The only "draw an Owl" part of me is how Django knows/cares about the data classes and does something with them. Personally, if we change anything about settings, I'd like to see first-party ENV support too. Especially with DATABASE_URL support since that's been an unofficial standard for so long.

🤔 I’m happy to see so many good CalVer discussions going on.

It inspired me to add `/version.txt` endpoints to a bunch of my projects, along with a few JSON REST endpoints.

I already expose the CalVer version in the footer, but this lets me skip parsing HTML and quickly check whether a deploy was successful.

Coolify is great, but it’s even better when I can write simple tooling to verify that everything is running the version it should be.

I see this same point made every week on Mastodon. Just saying one last week about a country being 100% sustainable from renewables. The Biden administration brought it up and advanced the US too before it was dismantled by the next administration change.

@markwalker@fosstodon.org Maybe so. I'm pretty picky about this and settled on environs[django] as my go-to after issues from everything else. Pulling it into Django might be a win, but it'd be great to have some of this built in to support ENVs with this library to fall back on for custom settings.

@fancysandwiches@neuromatch.social I plan to blog about building it and how well it does, throwing some real numbers at it. They went from $40 a board to $200 in a few short months. (I paid ~$150 two weeks ago) It won't be as powerful as the Steam Machine, but it feels much faster than my Steam Deck did on a few 3d games I liked. Once I figure out how to turn on FPS, I'll post some numbers. I figured out (with help) how to enable all 40 cores yesterday (ships with 24 active) and it was quite a boost.

The solution was to take a JPEG of text, convert it to a PDF, then OCR it, rather than OCR'ing the JPEG. 🤷

@konsonantenboy@hachyderm.io I have used pyproject.toml for a while with bumpver, and it's great. My only complaint is that you have to "uv lock" or whatever, which is a bumper issue. My change is mostly about how to efficiently see which version is deployed on the actual live web server. I am going to automate some checks to make sure.

Replying to
@adamghill@indieweb.social @josh@social.joshthomas.dev The reason some of us try to inject Pydantic into everything is that a BaseModel is a better starting point than Python's Object or even a vanilla Python class. So giving it a Python dict or JSON gets you a lot for free, and it's easy to validate and serialize. The magic for me is giving it dates in random formats and yet it always does the right thing with them. 90% of the time, I'm just using simple Python types and it just works.
