Calculator manufacturers (afaik) never said "You'll never have to do math again!" They just said "You don't have to do rote calculation all the time."

Today I got another message from someone along the lines of "I built something that worked great for a while, but I can't go any further. Do I really have to learn programming to do something with this project?"

There aren't any easy answers to these questions.

I finally got back out to Looking Glass yesterday, for the first time since January I think. It's such a grounding place to return to. :)

@AlSweigart@mastodon.social 42, of course.

In all seriousness, sometimes I use a random seed that generates appealing output. Otherwise I choose a low integer that I like.

I stopped by a NAPA auto parts store this morning for wiper blades. Every auto parts store I've ever been in has had a staunch right-wing vibe.

OH: "I heard someone say the other day if Trump was a Democrat he'd still be an idiot."

OH: "They just keep blaming everything on Biden, but it ain't Biden anymore."

I don't know that any of these people would actually vote differently, but it's sure interesting to hear the vibe shift in some of these places.

@shinmera@mastodon.tymoon.eu I think a good part of the anti-intellectual mess we see today is a direct result of resentment from being looked down on, and spoken down to, during those k-12 years.

@shinmera@mastodon.tymoon.eu Growing up, I thought everyone around me had a similar school experience because we all went to the same school. When I set foot into a classroom for the first time as a teacher, I couldn't believe how wrong that impression was. How you are perceived academically pretty much defines how you're treated by teachers. You get a weird pass if you're athletic, but if you're not focused on college you're less than.

When I get a PR these days, I often look at the user's profile before deciding how much time to invest in interacting with them.

I'm playing around with a tool that gives you a snapshot of information about a GitHub user, to help make these kinds of decisions. I don't want to generate any kind of score; I just want to surface the kind of information I look for in these situations.

Does a tool like this already exist?

@bill@gts.dootzone.win @terminalmage@fosstodon.org Yeah, these are long-standing tensions, that are more and more visible as time goes on. I keep coming to PyCon because it's a place where that tension exists, but it's being talked about and wrestled with. I didn't enjoy the opening keynote any more than anyone else. But it's a blip in a long stream of talks much more like the one @amcasari@hachyderm.io just gave, the one Pablo gave yesterday, and Cory Doctorow's keynote last year.

@jacob@social.jacobian.org I keep wanting a deterministic layer in there somewhere. Letting an AI take over the test suite is the piece that feels riskiest to me. That's always been the layer of trust and confidence. A steadily evolving test suite that I understand is my best guarantee that things will continue to work at least as well as they have in the past. If I give over control of that layer, I don't know where my confidence that things will work comes from.

@mpirnat Oh man. The only bright point for me is it's a clear answer to the question, what's going to happen to Astral. I was really hoping their private package hosting work was going to work for funding the open tools.

@wsvincent I think your main points are reasonable, but this acquisition was frustrating to me because I really liked the pyx approach. Astral building a high-quality private package index has a much higher potential to align with maintaining a high-quality open source package management tool. Astral being acquired by an AI company that has repeatedly acted with disregard for its negative impacts on society makes me expect AI bloat in uv.

The hardest part of this process for people new to deployment is managing SSH keys. To use the scalingo CLI, you need to upload a public key to Scalingo. It's not overly difficult, but if you've never heard of SSH keys before it can be daunting. I'm wondering if the plugin could offer to manage that process for people. That would truly make this a beginner-friendly deployment tool.

@djangochat I love that you're all in agreement that over-investing in unit tests is an anti-pattern. I've been trying to get a PyCon talk on this subject accepted, with no luck yet. (Not talking about this year's submissions.)

@squidfunk@fosstodon.org I responded "Depends on the case", because there are a few cases where I'd accept a PR. But that's <10% of the time. It's only if I can recognize that the change is something I'd like to see in the codebase, exactly as it's presented. If I like the idea but don't like everything about the implementation, I will not attempt to communicate about the PR/ issue. I've closed lots of PRs and issues with a simple "no thanks bot".

Documentation habit: When I'm finished a PR where I've opened a bunch of tabs while working, I usually add a comment with the header "Resources" on the related issue. Then I add links to the tabs that would be most helpful if I come back to similar work in the future.

It's way more useful than just dumping tabs into a bookmarks directory.

Here's today's example: https://github.com/ehmatthes/django-simple-deploy/issues/188#issuecomment-1320806026

@adamghill

The code is not the valuable artifact, though.

I get the point there, but I think it's a little more nuanced. I think there's often a promise we make when building something that we'll be able to maintain it, and add on to it over time.

If an AI-assisted codebase can be maintained over time, that's great. I think we're going to see some companies fail or struggle really hard because they solved something quickly, but couldn't iterate beyond that initial success.

@webology @wsvincent I agree, but they get to fill it with whatever pushes and nudges to their projects as they want. That almost always leads to more friction for most users, and I don't see OpenAi keeping the tool as simple and clean as it has been so far. That said, I'm going to keep on using it until I see a specific reason not to.
