Anti racist. Fuck TERFs. Your pronouns are yours to choose, and it is on me to respect them.

Aspiring AWS solutions architect, wannabe maker and terrible musician. All advice given should be taken with several grains of salt.

Flippancy aside I care deeply about the intersection between tech and human dignity, democracy, justice and equality. I do my best to be an ally - I am not perfect, but I try to do better every day.

On a personal front, I am married. She is not on the Fedi, no matter how much I have tried so far. I am interested in some
#gaming (solo story based #RPGs and #PathOfExile), #linux (#GarudaLinux has been good to me), #MechanicalKeyboards, #MusicMaking, and #Woodworking.

I can only sort of square that circle, and more as an academic excersize than me genuinely agreeing with him, I am going to try. I think he is looking at the technology sans politics (problematic) and arguing that after the VC funding dries up and these models become open source (second problematic assumption) that the rest of us can then just run them on a spare GPU since there will be a glut of them on the market (third problematic assumption). The first problematic assumption is that any technology can be separated from the political environment that birthed it. These LLMs in.particular came to prominence when tech workers began to get uppity and talk about unions and shit and was explicitly marketed as a labor replacement. The second assumption is that these bleeding edge models ever become open source/open weight, which assumes that Altman and cohort's raging narcissism causes them to open weight the models in the interest of public good, instead of keeping the models closed and lobbying the govt to start a protectionist racket, locking in a captive audience. The third problematic assumption is GPUs dropping in price because the investment dries up. This only happens if the whole thing goes belly up so spectacularly that there is a global recession with the whole shindig. I think Doctorow is looking at that last possibility as the starting point for his thesis and that seems like it is starting from a position of maximalist harm and working then towards a utopia. Works for science fiction, problematic here in the Real. My post makes it seem like I dislike Doctorow and the opposite is true - I am glad he speaks up about antitrust enforcement as the policy lever to give workers more power. I just think his reasoning here is flawed (similar as @jcoglan@mastodon.social here)

@alice@lgbtqia.space isn't there a comic floating around where to find the soldiers who are faking being dead, the platoon leader says "all men are pigs" or something like that? That comic would not have resonance if it weren't for ... /Checks notes ... All the patriarchal assholes who defend the thought process that brought us the problem children.

@meljoann@topspicy.social holy shit this is awesome. I am now going to actively work on getting my web presence for my musical project online because this was one of the last tools I felt I was missing. Do you know if there is a way to architect a low bitrate stream for non-subscribers and a high bitrate stream for people who subscribe?

@yetiinabox@todon.nl whenever someone says they are from somewhere else, I also make a conscious effort to say "well I am glad you are here!" I have also noticed that once you get people from other parts of the world talking, they are generally better socialized than Americans. Wonder why that is?

@jamie@gamerstavern.online ficus are super resilient, as you can see - you should be OK once it gets repotted. In general, I am against the standard shallow pots for bonsai and in favor of pots with more depth to allow the roots to spread out more. This gives you more time between pottings

@jamie@gamerstavern.online doesn't look like it has been repotted. I would get fresh soil (look up the soil mixture for ficus) and a slightly larger pot. Then pull it out, trim the smaller roots off so it is just the root ball + larger roots and drop it in the new pot

@PermaSolarPotter@mastodon.green May your neighbor rest in power. Even after his passing, he is giving care to you. Everyone focuses on the roots for beets but I love beet greens just as much as the root - super tasty, less bitter than kale or chard and more fun and colorful. For the root, I just use it in place of carrots or other tubers with onions and garlic, and then mix that into the rest of what I am cooking when I serve it (as to avoid a purple dish).

@jamie@gamerstavern.online sure thing. Fixed the glaring typo I missed in the original post. Bonsai need to be repotted every 6 months when young, every year as they age, and then once mature every few years

@jamie@gamerstavern.online root binding is the (pardon the pun) root cause, and that binding caused those same roots to lose uptake in water and soil nutrients.

WTAF is this blithering buzzword screed mean? The future of work is shifting from tools to systems?
My friend, SYSTEMS ARE TOOLS. And the tools you are glorifying are the tools of the capital holding class that will enrich themselves to avoid accountability to us, the working class.

Go read some books and listen to Paris Marx, Timnit Gebru or Ed Zitron. Their criticism of AI comes from 3 different angles and all 3 angles make sense.

@Floppy@mastodon.me.uk @Mastodon@mastodon.social Makes me wonder how granular this will be - I'm in Phoenix, AZ, and a hyper-local instance here might be fine, or might be super problematic depending on the area of PHX that it is in (for instance, if it was in Tempe, AZ it would be great - bunch of college kids talking about college kid type things - but if it was in Surprise, it could be the new Nextdoor, or worse.) How are these servers vetted? At what point is a server "too big" or "too small"? Lots of questions on this one.

@zwol@masto.hackers.town @keithpjolley@discuss.systems I can see that. Full disclosure, I mostly asked to spark a discussion - I own a KIA Nero and do not really want to sell it for an untested EV. I also am waiting on the couple of potential lithium-ion battery replacements to mature before I buy a different EV. The Telo looks nice - the height is a little bothersome but not a deal breaker for me. 40k is steep for a car.

If it helps, my end goal is to stream EDM performances of old jazz standards and my own tunes. I know that I have to work with a performing rights org for performance rights of those standards because so few of them are in the public domain. That side of this is going to involve at least a consultation with an attorney before I do anything serious with this.
