after 8 years of working at GitHub i finally had reason to learn how git works; i guess in all this time i’ve only been working on the Hub parts
anyways git it turns out is pretty cool and straight forward.
the daycare workers at our daycare are unionized and have successfully bargained for themselves more time off which will be a slight inconvenience for me personally
but i am very happy for them
in the past 52 weeks i went dancing 53 times. here are some semi-idiosyncratic beliefs i’ve developed around raves, dance parties, dancing.
- one hour dj sets can be good but never great; you need at least two hours to really say something interesting
- sets recorded live are better than sets recorded in a studio (not controversial)
- crowd quality is very important; a truly great dance party has excellent music and an excellent crowd
- the best parties ban cellphones
- 3-4am at a party that goes to 6 is a special time
- you need a dedicated chill zone where people can chat
- in an ideal world room at the front ought to be reserved for Dancers; it is surprising to me how many people go to shows but then don’t really dance
- mixed crowds are best. can’t have too many straight me; can’t have too many gay men. i have yet to experience having too many women but theoretically also possible
(fear and trembling posting)
abraham's sacrifice of isaac is an act beyond ethics and rationality, because of a deep seated feeling that it'll worth it on the other side
to transition your gender is an act beyond ethics and rationality, because of a deep seated feeling that it'll be worth it on the other side
problem: do you have an absolute duty to god to transition?
I just discovered that substack silently errors out of the “subscribe to this newsletter“ flow if you’re on a mobile browser and don’t continue within the app.
i only figured this out by accident when i went looking for the confirmation email and couldn’t find it
haha what an evil dark ui pattern! stop using substack!!! they’re already turning away your readers
it seems unfair when i have been at my most idle when my body most desperately needs exercise and movement
THAT
is when i least feel able to act on it.
yes,
i am dying
but the idea of going for a run feels like a punishment
i shared a bit of skin in a cheeky instagram post and it attracted a chaser — and so i experienced my first bout of unwanted (presumably) male attention.
the guy messaged me on a friday, followed up on tuesday, i soft blocked him, he refollowed then sent me another msg the following saturday
the persistence is creepy; i found myself scrubbing links to my real identity (it’s an open account) before i hard blocked him.
i’d heard of these patterns from female friends but experiencing it first hand is something else
being queer doesn’t mean you’re a *good* person but
it does make you a better person than you would have been otherwise;
and this is now a core belief of mine

you can! you mock it out, and slowly replace the mocks as each piece comes online.
"get /foo should return json '{bar:1}'"
before its implemented get /foo will return an error – so we mock it out, and have our mock return an empty string. this way the you have a failing test that expresses your intent (as opposed to erroring out)
once get /foo starts working, you delete the mock and now the same test targets the actual implementation, and if it passes you know you have working code.
caveat being: writing these kinds of test mocks is very easy in Ruby and excrutiating in a lot of other languages.
i don't always work this way but i find it helps me avoid analysis paralysis to think about the inputs and outputs

in static languages the mock satisfies the type; in Go we use an interface but in Java you could have an abstract class iirc? it's just more work but the same basic idea applies
and I often don’t know the expected behavior before I write the code
writing the tests performs this same function; start a high level then get more specific, writing the tests teaches you what you want the program to do :)
