Ahhh I really don't manage to learn photo editing. I love taking pictures, but then when I try to process them in Darktable or RawTherapee, what I end with is always worse (to my eyes) than the JPEG out of the camera body, it's so frustrating. And I'm not used to not managing to learn something I dedicate myself to. It doesn't really bar me from taking pictures; I enjoy the process, and often the camera body JPEGs are good enough... but I want to do better than good enough, and to get full control on the final render. There is just a lot of untapped creative potential here and I want to exploit it. If you have any recommendation for tutorials or courses about that, I'm really interested; just fucking around with the tools do me no good. Only two requirements: It has to be for something that can run on my Linux system. (I don't have anything else.) The main tools I know are Darktable and RawTherapee but I'm open to other suggestions. I'd prefer free software but it's not a hard requirement as long as it supports Linux and doesn't cost an arm and a leg or run on a subscription model.Most tutorials about photo editing are in the form of videos, which makes sense since it's something very visual... buuuut I really don't like videos as a media for learning stuff. I find the huge majority of them too slow and not dense enough (it's almost painful to feel my brain having adjust down its processing speed to match the video and being spoon-fed one tidbit of information at a time at a rythm that isn't mine), and also too linear (compared to a text where I can search, skip, skim through etc.) If you want to recommend video tutorials or youtube channels to me, please send me some that are dense, technical, to the point and well structured. I wouldn't mind paying a bit of money for some course or training, if it's really good.

I also had a look and I do like what you do with landscape As you maybe saw, the pictures you linked (mine) were taken with my film camera (it's a scan of the negative), so I don't have a RAW to work with. Still, I could do a bit of editing. Actually I did some on several film pictures scans but using GIMP, mostly tweaking the curves to correct over- or under-exposure, and sometimes trying to denoise some of the underexposed ones, though that's tricky. I don't think I touched those ones, though. The thing is, I absolutely love how they turned out but it's nothing like the scene looked like: the library lighting is actually very warm and pleasant, it's completely different from that sickly green hue, it was a complete surprise when I got them developed (and again, I loved it!). It was a special "retro" film I got from cheap at my local photo lab and I think it has a unusual chemistry that does something weird with the spectrum of that specific lighting.

@siblingsofthevoid@void.lgbt Thanks for the advice! About 1, I already take all of my photos in RAW + JPEG. In 99% of times I do nothing with the RAW and it just ends up taking space on my NAS. 2 is good advice. Most of my photography is low light urban photography, shot at dusk or night, emphasizing colored lights, light and color contrasts, arrangements of objects in the scene. Usually I'd like to emphasize the color contrasts, but I already thought that I could play with black and white more if the colors are not that interesting but the light contrasts and overall picture are still nice. 4 is a good point, actually, and I've no idea how good my main screen is for that; it's not a terrible screen but I absolutely did not choose it for that (it's a 4K LG screen from 2018, and at the time I got it to watch movies at home). I should check and see if I can do some sort of calibration. (And I've been thinking of replacing this screen with something more suited to my current usages anyway, though I don't have the budget right now.) About 6 / 7, yes, I agree with the gist of it. I still take many pictures I like (they are mostly on my other account, @miranda@queer.roboctopus.org - almost all of them are unedited) and the more I know and use my gear, the better I get with it. Still, I think some pictures that are no good out of the camera could be made into something I like. Also, I feel that for some sort of pictures at least, the RAW is more like a... raw material and the editing can get you really different (and equally good) pictures out of it. I'm thinking for example of what people do here, where someone gives a RAW and different people play with it and give their take on it: https://discuss.pixls.us/c/processing/playraw/30 It seems to be especially the case for landscape photography, which is not a genre I do much, but maybe I would try it more if I understood how to process them better. And finally, on a more personal point of view, it feels really intellectually frustrating to me to not to be able to do at least as good as the camera's automatic processing. It's good that it gives good results, but I wish I could understand the process well enough to achieve the same result manually. As it is, when I use the JPEG, the camera is making choices for me. Even if I agree with those choices, I wish I could understand them well enough to also understand how they can be tweaked and how different choices could be made. It would just make my hobby more satisfying, regardless of whether or not I would get better photos out of it.

@espyeen that's extremely relatable. I don't know how to deal with it other than look forward and move on. But still, we are the sum of our past experiences and decisions, and there are things missing there. I find comfort socializing with other weirdos, my age or otherwise. There are people who have things missing in their lives too, compared to most people's experience, in different ways. And we can be beautiful together.

@Abigailmaes @miranda sharing digital pictures of the paper pictures? Yeah, I was just thinking about it. It will certainly be "lower quality" than the professionally scanned negatives, but it may better account for the effect they make.

@njion ah, I've been trying to use it for the last few days and I've been disappointed so far, would you have any tip to share? I've been trying to follow the technique described here by James Hoffmann: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpOdennxP24 I'm quite bad at describing coffee but I'd say the taste was not bad but really light and quite watery, lacking depth and roundness. I followed Hoffman's guidance for procedure, quantities and timing - going on the heavy side for coffee amount - so I don't think that's where the problem lies. (I mean, I don't care about following his technique exactly but he's no fool and I'm sure I should get a better result of I do it right.) As for grinding, I initially tried size 11 on my Baratza Encore, and the next time I tried size 8 and it was... a bit better but not that much. I could try even finer but it seems weirdly fine with that kind of technique?
