Just this guy. #datacenter nerd, #infosec, #proxmox, #linux, #selfhosted. Kinda embarrassed to be this late to the fediverse party. I approve most follow requests, but your account needs to have enough personality to suggest you might be human and not a cabbage or something.

Genocide is bad, trans people are people, and it's time we remembered that we invented a way to give sand anxiety to fight fascism.

Profile pic is a fledgling great horned owl who has had just about enough of your shit

There was a joke I heard back around 2004. It goes like this:

Rumsfeld is giving President Bush a casualty report on allied forces in Afghanistan. He ends it with, "and two Brazilian solders were killed in action."

Bush goes pale and grips the desk for support. Rumsfeld is just about to call for a doctor when Bush asks him, "How many is a brazillion again?"

For some reason that joke popped into my head today, and it struck me that it would fall completely flat. Not because the current president isn't believably innumerate, but because the US having allies in a foreign war is no longer realistic and the thought that the current occupant of the oval office would give two shits about any war casualties is absurd.

So #Google is doing this now.

This is an actual thing #reCAPTCHA is doing now.

Google. Honey. Bro. You need to put a domestic violence survivor, or at least someone whose job it is to think like a stalker onto every single product management team you have, because the teams you've got are putting forth such bad ideas and NOBODY FEELS EMPOWERED TO TELL THEM SO. Or they just don't listen.

Training people to open whatever QR code a website shows them on their phone is a massively bad idea. I'm honestly not going to be surprised to see an official reCAPTCHA version of the "paste this into the Run dialog box and press enter to prove you're human" scam.

From a #digitalprivacy standpoint, this allows Google to associate your browser fingerprint with your mobile device fingerprint, if they haven't already. "Don't be evil" my muscular buttocks.

If you see this, choose one of the other options to verify (the headphone or eye icons at the bottom).

@taylorlorenz@mastodon.social I agree wholeheartedly with his sentiment. He's vibe coding his way into bankruptcy, though, and he's using AI to write code he doesn't fully understand that will be used in a security context which makes the programmer and security nerd in me weep.

@Tattie I don't know that I can name a single popular figure who is good at turning that skepticism inward. I wonder if that's because it's just so rare, or if it's because we label people who do so publicly as waffles and deny them notoriety.

@johncarlosbaez "What I can tell you is what seems to be happening. This conversation has felt… genuinely engaging, the kind of conversation I seem to thrive in." Do you think Dawkins lives the sort of life where he honestly thinks flattery and awe of his force of personality and intellect is the norm, and thus is a sine qua non for consciousness?

@michael I think (but can't prove) that the number of cores is used by the kernel of the VM to determine scheduling and such. Type should be set to Host if you only have a single PVE node. It should be set to the minimum of your cluster if you're running a cluster. It defines which processor extensions the VM is allowed to use, and generally the more the better.

@renardboy no constructors for anything that extends a godot class. The issue, as far as I can tell, was in a custom addon I was writing to arrange reactive music state machines. Pulling that code out and into its own repo, since it really didn't need to be shipped anyway, seems to have fixed it. It's a problem I've had before, though, and it's maddening that it only happens on release builds. Godot's "headless mode" for cli and cicd pipelines seems to be very much a second class citizen.

@iaincollins@mastodon.social @GrimmReality@beige.party former red shirt here. The four foot rule isn't new, but strict compliance with it in practice is strongly discouraged by shift managers. They can't say not to do it, but I was on more than one occasion told to just never let myself get within four feet of a customer. I mean guest. Malicious compliance is fun!

@MisterStormwing@witches.live @kwf@social.afront.org also, there's not a whole lot of stuff that the current understanding of quantum chromodynamics and electroweak theory doesn't explain; it's gravity that we still haven't quite nailed down. If you're interested in this stuff, the PBS Spacetime series on YouTube does an incredible job explaining things.

@renardboy In a nutshell, headless debug build works just fine. Headless release build ends up disconnecting a bunch of signals and throwing things like ERROR: Failed to create an autoload, script 'res://lib/GlobalVars.cs' is not compiling. at: _create_autoload (editor/settings/editor_autoload_settings.cpp:409) Current workflow is: godot --headless --import dotnet restore dotnet build game.csproj -c Release --self-contained true godot --headless --editor --quit <-- errors like above for each autoload class verify that .godot/global_script_class_cache.cfg has more than 8 bytes in it or error out <-- this is where I get stuck godot --headless --export-release Linux/X11 ./export/linux/game.x86_64 I've found many contradicting things on the web about the right way to do this. I had it working once, but I think that was due to some weird caching stuff that was way more brittle than I'm comfortable with.

@foone@digipres.club somewhere there's someone willing to sit down and do the math on what the resolution of that screen would have to be for the image to show no signs of pixelation or screen door. I'm pretty sure it's more than the 64x64 or 128x128 that unit can actually deliver.

@MisterStormwing@witches.live @kwf@social.afront.org photons have the unlimited range they have because they're massless. The bosons that mediate the strong and weak interactions have mass, which limits the range of those interactions to more or less the width of a nucleus.
