@irfan@sakurajima.social So instead of a standardized/regulated system you can use a proprietary system which needs (expensive) proprietary hardware, and an additional proprietary app. It's so weird to see people actively cheer on a such a massive step back in society.

@Alice@beige.party I think it has been the norm for dumb people to enjoy the bad things since forever. Its what the whole advertisement industry is based on, for instance. Windows is still the most used OS even though its the absolute worst experience imaginable. McDonalds is one of the most popular restaurants in the world yet the food is mediocre at best. I'm sure there's plenty of other examples if you give it a few minutes of thought.

@privacyguides@mastodon.neat.computer The European people need to start holding these corrupt and self-serving politicians accountable. They will continue to introduce laws that contradict basic human rights if we do not. We must fight them in every way possible, including physical if we get the chance. Make the politicians in favor of chat control regret their decisions deeply. Make them pay in a way that will make them fear the people they're supposed to represent.

@anildash@me.dm If you want to return to git being decentralized, then it sounds like its a good time not to make a competitor to GitHub. Just use git as it was intended, no need for a huge code forge to push everything through. Use email to share patches around. The tools still exist to have a good, decentralized experience.

Multiple lines sent still become multiple lines on the receiving end. It really feels like dreaming up issues as an excuse to use worse chat platforms.flaky connectionsYeah, this is kind of an issue, the de-facto solution is to use a bouncer on a more stable connection. Its not great from a usability perspective, but since most IRC users are techies, it doesn't appear to be a huge issue in practice. It would be nice to see a better solution than "rent a server and use that".

@avuko@infosec.exchange @Gina@fosstodon.org PS: using Signal (or Wire ;) always makes sense. For civiliansI'm not too knowledged on Wire, but Signal still uses Google services to operate, and they are vehemently against self-hosting. These are two major red flags for sovereignty, so while it is better than WhatsApp or Microsoft Teams, its still nowhere near good enough. For civil servants, having official communications on auto-delete is probably an offence.15 years of Rutte have shown that intentionally ensuring there is no documentation about decisions or other communications is actually not an issue at all. The worst that can happen is that you get promoted to siphon even more money into your own pocket.

@menherahair@eientei.org @Zergling_man@sacred.harpy.faith @bonifartius@noauthority.social @Pi_rat@freesoftwareextremist.com you don't routinely write more than 1 line of text to peopleI do, though. I also use email, both for work and for staying in touch with friends. I have an XMPP server (though I rarely use it), and some of my friends are on Matrix which also has multi-line messages. I don't think multi-line messages are bad per se, and every IRC network I'm on won't kill you for sending a few lines in rapid succession, as if they were multi-line messages. As I stated earlier, saying flood kills are a main concert as to why IRC is unusable is just making up an excuse to denounce IRC as a whole.in fact it has no downsidesUnless you just wanted to casually chat, rather than send essays back and forth. For the essay sending we already have other platforms, so I fail to see why IRC must change if its simply better to use a different tool for a different job.it's understood having them is a good thingIts understood to be a good thing to have different tools for different jobs.xmpp was partially designed as a replacement for emails. this is not "abuse" or "feature bloat" or whateverIndeed, XMPP was designed for that kind of discussion, IRC is not. Meanwhile, in practice, IRC isn't broken for discusssions either. Most networks are configured to be "broken" for flooding, if that's how you want to describe it.you're a fucking cavemanI can tell you I'm having a great time in this here cave. I would recommend it!

@mullana@chaos.social @fsfe@mastodon.social I find the comparison to be a bit weird. If you want to continue your analogy, you should've included a Windows sticker on the laptop rather than an Arch sticker. A LOT of people are otherwise confused, GNU+Linux is after all only 3% of the marketshare or something? I'm not hating on the comic per se, but I am, as always, very disappointed at the FSFE for not having a single person on their staff that actually cares about software freedom. They should've shared (or commissioned? I'm not sure if this was a paid job) something that shows free software to celebrate free software day.

Im in a few dozen channels right now, across a handful of servers, and I see no flood kills in the past month in the logs. I'd also note that flood kills aren't part of the IRC spec as far as I'm aware, its handled by the server/network. Oftentimes, opers are exempt from flood killing, for instance, and you could run your own IRC server where no flood killing is done at all.

@Zergling_man@sacred.harpy.faith @Pi_rat@freesoftwareextremist.com @bonifartius@noauthority.social @menherahair@eientei.org I like having actual chats on a chat medium, yes. If I look at Matrix rooms, its used more as a forum where its just huge swaths of text, which wouldve been a better fit in, well, an actual forum, or maybe a mailing list. To take the definition of "chat", according to WM:Verb: to talk in an informal or familiar manner Noun: idle small talk light informal or familiar talkThese definitions do not align with large swaths of text, so they are literally not "chat". They can be discussions, formal or informal, but thats different, and we already have something for this, discussion forums. IRC however is actually for chat, its right there in the name, Internet Relay Chat. People spamming or otherwise disrupting a channel with a large amount of text all at once is not, by definition, chat.

@trib@aus.social Mastodon is 100% the early days of social media all over. Some of you will already be familiar with this story.Mastodon is a latecomer to the Fediverse, GNU Social would be more apt to be the early days. I'm familiar with the story of Mastodonters barging in and pretending the Fediverse is all them, though. This is very much how things were when I first joined Twitter in 2007.Most of the people here don't want this place to be like Twitter, because Twitter sucks. We came here instead, because we like this better. If the Fediverse becomes more like Twitter, it will only inevitably be ruined in the same way.the #fediverse is putting up a good fight. Some people are, but Mastodon surely isn't, it's enshittification of this beautiful Fediverse.
