@MakersHour@cupoftea.social Q1: intro/what do you wish was up? A1: Hi, I'm Ted. Mostly lately I build things with blinky lights. I've been meaning work on some wearable glowy projects for #BurningMan/#Neotropolis. Last night I thought of a way to handle a software problem that's been in my way. (Along with a flood of other ideas) Also I've been meaning to do some welding practice as meditation, but that will need to wait a week. And #OpenSauce last weekend makes me want to build a robot. #makershour

@orange_lux@eldritch.cafe I feel strongly that way about code review at work. I didn't mind needing to make corrections because it was mentorship. I'm connecting with a colleague and we are both growing. But reviewing some vibe coded garbage, are they learning? They're mostly just having the LLM do the fixes too. It feels more empty and more draining. I'm not so enthusiastic about being just a debugger and a gatekeeper. @godotengine@mastodon.gamedev.place

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social Q3: something to make a journey easier? A3: For the traveling part, I've built a cigarette lighter to XT60 adapter to power a variety of things with a nicer connector. (inverter, fridge, adjustable power supply, etc) For the destination, I built a timer/temperature monitor to control a swamp cooler for burning man - it will automatically turn on when it warms up, and turn off when water runs out or it is late enough that I'm probably out and about already.

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social Q5: makers trip? A5: this is recency bias, but from what's been filling my timeline, #EMFCamp would be my current answer. (My original maker dream trip 25 years ago was Burning Man and now that's a routine for over a decade) #makershour

@MakersHour@cupoftea.social Q2: make while traveling? A2: sometimes. Trips to BurningMan and anime conventions and maker events, I basically always have some project in progress. Rarely I will bring small projects on other trips - only if it needs very limited tools. The kit varies wildly. To BM supplies are too extensive to list. Anime cons are usually at least basic sewing supplies and maybe some extra tools like for setting grommets. Maker events like #teardown I have basic electronics gear. #makershour

It's an incredible thing to have something in my head and then in my hands, or seeing myself wear it in a mirror. It was even more surreal to imagine a space and then be standing in that thing from my imagination.

It still feels a bit hard to believe seeing photos from #Neotropolis last week - this place that people have these cool photos from is the place that previously existed only in my head.

This year's upgrades are the fans and the ceiling. More was planned, maybe for next year.

@byorgey@mathstodon.xyz Thank you for this. I've been trying to figure out something to say to a nephew currently entering the field - I'm going to share this.

@mjd@mathstodon.xyz We'd benefit a lot as a society if the risk of getting fired weren't so intimidating. A lot of the unethical actions being done right now are only possible due to lack of resistance. The lack of resistance I believe stems from perception about job prospects. By reenforcing a scarcity mindset around jobs, great evil is possible. I have savings to get by for years. But even understanding that, speaking up is stressful when we're conditioned with fear. @leonardom@mathstodon.xyz @byorgey@mathstodon.xyz

All it takes is remembering that the power in tech truly rests with all the people who actually make things

That power becomes diluted when individual workers are more replaceable. A rough job market enables the current management behavior.

Simply having real innovation isn't enough if the company won't listen to it. And they're happy not to, and then rush to pivot when it's too late.

This reenforces more than ever that we need unions. I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned.

@lina@vt.social I have had to review incoming AI mass code changes. So far every time I've found problems. They've "fixed" tests by masking the problem instead of fixing the problem. (Worse than when the LLM just deletes the tests and so you know clearly it's being sketchy) Or introduced concurrency issues (this is Go so very prone to concurrency dangers). Very rarely if ever happened with the older large scale refactors.

@f4grx@chaos.social I have been wondering if that means we should be looking into laser comms or something. But also you can transmit in the move - it's just a burst from a device in your pocket. It's not the bulk of older radio gear. And you can leave a relay node somewhere you don't own. @ozdreaming@infosec.exchange @cos@fosstodon.org @nblr@chaos.social

@nlarson830@techhub.social there was a browser called InternetWorks that had tabs and panes around 1995, long before others. Unfortunately it didn't keep pace with Netscape and I had to switch for sites to be usable. I don't think Netscape Navigator ever had tabs, I thought that was a Firefox thing from early 2000s.

@nomis@chaos.social add vents? The ones I've made have vents in the top because I thought it could be an issue. But I never noticed them getting warm. Maybe the vents work more than I imagined. The woven design of this makes it naturally vented.

@zachleat This is unfortunately very relatable. When I quit, I suspect I will not return to tech as a carrier but I hope to keep it as a hobby. I'll need to find something else.

@MartinEscardo I noticed today that that PayPal app on my phone is 650MB. It's hard for me to imagine how it can be a full CD worth of content. (And how much bandwidth does it waste on every update - I don't think updates are patch files like they used to be)

Also made a virtual 3D Christmas tree in the volume (code available on Pixelblaze forum - https://forum.electromage.com/t/i-made-an-led-3d-mapping-tool-that-might-be-of-interest/3598/11 )

I made an LED 3D mapping tool that might be of interest

I tried a Christmas-y thing too - no tree, so I created a tree in a mess of LEDs mapped in 3D space with marimapper cyl = [0.44,0.2,0.5] // location of the top of the "tree" cs = 0.4 // Slope of the side of the tree br = 0.1 // radius of the start at the top of the tree th = 0.05 var t1 export function beforeRender(delta) { t1 = time(.1) } // cone SDF function cylsdf(x,y,z) { dx = x - cyl[0] dy = y - cyl[1] dz = z - cyl[2] dr = sqrt(dx*dx + dz*dz) if (dy <0 ) { // ch

@xs4me2@mastodon.social I don't think what we got reflects the people that voted for him. A lot of people are getting strained by the system and this was the ticket promising changing the system. To me it's clear that the option they selected is much worse than status quo, but this is what desperation drove them to. Perhaps this mask-off state of the system is what we need to move towards actually fixing it. @alanferrier@mastodon.scot
