If you believe that "ai" makes you 10x (or 50x!) more productive, what this tells me is that you are utterly useless and I'd be better served hiring or working with just about anyone else (though ideally someone with critical thinking skills and an interest in actually learning things).

Okay, I dump on bsky a fair bit... I mean no edit feature (still), it tends to really mangle images when recompressing them, it has an obnoxiously low character limit, it's not *actually* federated in any meaningful way, etc, etc... but today I uploaded a video and they now let you upload soft subtitles (vtt format), which is an awesome feature that I wish Mastodon/Fedi (and other platforms that let you share video) would adopt!

Is there a site somewhere tracking software that's remaining "AI"-free? Be it the original projects sticking to human authorship or forks made to preserve/maintain non-crapified versions? I should have bookmarked those vim preservation forks I saw recently.

If the goal of people who use miserable ai slop "illustrations" or start their article or blog post with shit like "In the age of AI ..." is to get me to immediately close that browser tab and never return, I can report they're succeeding quite impressively.

Game Changer has come so far across its eight seasons and multiple spin-offs, but this clip from S01E02 (the original Make Some Noise) is a nice reminder that it's always been funny.

All the breathless "AI is the future, you're being left behind" bloggery and linkedin posting reads to me like "you see, *my* skill is taking the request from the customer and giving it to the machine, which is why I'll have a fruitful career unlike you idiots who actually know how to do things", which is sort of equal parts hilarious and sad.

One of the things that drives me crazy about PS5 is how much of a headache it is to get screenshots or video captures off of the machine... you can awkwardly copy them to a USB device or awkwardly upload them to a small number of supported social networks... Steam Machine... how about ssh? samba? syncthing? some custom script you wrote? Pick your poison!

@cwebber And yeah, if "AI" actually, eventually delivers on this magical "the computer can just do anything you ask it to" future (I'm not holding my breath), I doubt I'd be losing out in any way by waiting until it was reality (and I remain unconvinced that even then I'd want to stop learning or thinking or doing things on my own).

This writeup on the technical underpinnings of The Incident at Galley House is a really enjoyable read. Lots of neat details on the pipelines and tooling they developed specific to this fantastic narrative game:

(It's a great game and you should play it if you haven't yet.)

The "Grimoire Edition" hardcover of Witch Hat Atelier is a really nice book. Very nice paper, printing, and binding. The second and third volumes are planned for August and November this year, at which point that'll cover the first 9 original manga volumes. (14 published in English so far of 16 published in Japanese, and the series is ongoing).

Oh, also, Witch Hat Atelier itself is absolutely fantastic. Amazing art, layout (look at photo #3) and storytelling. Read it.

@masp When I was in middle school, first learning C, I found the PC Hack 3.60 source code. I managed to get it compiling with Turbo C 2.0 and proceeded to recreate some features I liked in NetHack (which I had also played on DOS but had not located source for), like spellbooks. To this day I credit Hack for being instrumental to me understanding pointers and data structures (particularly linked lists) in C. Very educational!

https://engineering.block.xyz/blog/18mb-of-hashmap-overhead

The real question here is why in the world did someone decide to implement an array of 16 floats as a hashmap in the first place.

The next question is, now that you've reduced it to a 64byte array instead of 792 bytes of hashmap and related goop, should be "how many of those 24674 arrays are identical?"... that's still 1.5MB (not counting heap overhead).

ProTip: Think about the code you're writing. That's not evil "premature optimization", that's just common sense.

It's going to be worth it though, as the direct code generation and IR generation paths will both end up cleaner and simpler as a result of moving a lot of bookkeeping up a layer. I think this also is going to be helpful for wrangling things like small structures (especially slices, arrays-with-length, interfaces) stored in 2-3 parameter/local slots.

@ceejbot@toot.cat I dunno. I feel like there's perhaps a very different quality bar for security exploits vs useful software that doesn't suck and is stable, maintainable, and not full of subtle bugs. Admittedly the industry apparently has long since decided that software quality doesn't matter and apparently the average end user now just assumes everything is unreliable crap and there's no alternative, so, hey, what do I know.

@masp Yeah, I also stumbled onto Hack/NetHack on the PC in the mid-80s and it was a very formative experience. I can't really play with graphical tiles because it still just feels wrong. Recently I've gotten into Caves of Qud (since their big UI/UX overhaul and Steam release), and it's been fun seeing a very modern take on both the mechanics and the setting (sci-fantasy-future rather than amalgam of classic fantasy past) of classic roguelikes.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I've never had much attachment to my first name (which is just exceedingly common for someone born in the 70s) or my last name, but officially changing it has always seemed like an enormous headache relative to my general indifference. If it brought me active misery I think I'd be much more inclined to explore options seriously. Using different names in (especially online) spaces on the other hand feels completely painless to me.

@cda@macaw.social This is what I've been leaning toward... having the string/slice entities basically be structs with a couple extra rules around their usage. The thing I really need to sort out is handling larger-than-single-register/word value types, which I think may entail decomposing variables of such types into groups-of-variables. Trying to avoid having to re-engineer the entire codegen phase of things (which presently assumes 1:1 param/variable:register, one register/value result of each expr, etc)

@mntmn@mastodon.social My typical approach for Host<->MCU SPI is that the host posts messages to the MCU and simultaneously receives events/responses (if available). I like having a bit indicating to the MCU if a full read is being done or not. It does tend to have to be tailored to the limitations of the MCU's SPI block -- if you can arrange to send a fixed byte if not-ready that's useful to ensure a "busy" status is always sent when the MCU isn't ready, otherwise a READY MCU->Host GPIO may be safest.

@cda@macaw.social I could treat tiny structs like sized arrays & slices as pass-by-stack, but I'd rather have them be (nearly) as inexpensive as raw pointers would be, so I'm hoping to just keep them in registers all the way. I gather LLVM's approach (to SSA generation) is start everything as memory hosted and them shuffle them up into registers, which does seem like it might simplify this sort of thing. Though right now I'm implementing actual register allocation, so all this must wait a bit longer.
