Talking about AI is complicated but this particular talking point always gets me...

> At Meta, Google, Microsoft, and others, leadership says that AI generates a growing share of the overall code, which makes it cheaper and faster to produce.

The total disconnect...just going back to judging planes by weight. How many kLOC did you write this quarter?

Like the problem space is simply that "more code needs to exist"

A society detached from the act of knowledge generation and object creation...that also freely leverages advanced weapon systems...feel like I saw a show about this once...

@n8foo@macaw.social If you went to a CSU for computer engineering in the late 90s/early 00s, several of your projects were wire wrapped. There was also Roadrunner which was soldered but was this kind of awesome point-to-point enameled wire routing pen (with a connected spool). The system included these slick wire-ways.

@issackelly@mastodon.social Yeah, there is generally a shocking amount of good old "expert system" code a.k.a. if-else rules and regexes going on in this stuff. It's an IRC eggdrop bot that can use curl. 😬

@swetland@chaos.social Speaking of... I just noticed this right now in an old experiment IR dump. Clang modified a function to take a decomposed struct...basic but along the lines of your topic...I guess I hadn't really thought through this level of things yet as I have mostly been playing with higher-level language ideas.

void takes_val(struct str str_val) {

(struct str is just an int and a pointer in this experiment)

@swetland@chaos.social I am still on the fence about adding string slices. Ahh yeah, I just reworked parameters a little bit for mine...aggregate type parameter prep and some forms of re-ordering. Some basics like if a function returns a full struct as value that gets allocated on the stack and the address is passed in as param. That's table stakes but I can re-use alot of that mechanism for e.g. string type. Decomposing is an interesting approach though.

@lritter@mastodon.gamedev.place That's cool. On one hand it's annoying that strings are such a (comparably) tricky problem to solve... on the other it affords a lot of cleverness. :P I've considered the all-heap approach and then ~ installing cleanup for any strings that uhm "look" like they would be on the stack. -ETOOMANYWAYSFORWARD

@lritter@mastodon.gamedev.place oh interesting! I was toying with supporting slices. Thought only briefly about a special allocator just for strings or not...or schemes like un-special allocation but manage chunk-sized allocations sort of like gap-buffers so prepending and appending strings is free-or-cheap within some bounds.

I'm working on some bits and pieces related to over-the-air updates to the lunar surface. But OTA doesn't quite capture the scale here. So, I think I am going to rename this TLU for trans-lunar update.

Much like the author, and just from a consumer experience perspective, I have not bought things due to vendors' ham-fisted AI implementations... I have _also_ not bought things due to ham-fisted anti-AI implementations (companies that won't let me see their website due to some perceived bot-ness). I wonder how much of this kind of untracked loss is at play.

@issackelly@mastodon.social Yeah... among many aspects of it... it's hard to separate LLMs as a _general technology_ and what they could or will do from the way it's actually implemented currently...as well and the resources involved. A whole lot of talk about "efficiency" and we are talking about [checks notes] a $600B spend schedule on AI buildout from just one of those companies. Has anyone done the actual math? This is like saying I'm an effient beer drinker when I'm running up someone elses tab.

https://mastodon.social/@lapcatsoftware/116538879554037679 That is a career plan that is a lot like a lot of other working/middle-class traps (many versions of "retirement") that boil down to "life is what happens when you are busy making other plans". Also, it's quite a gamble given [gestures vaguely towards the world outside].

@jripley@mastodon.social Regarding ripple current, it's naturally problematic re electrolytics, but the opposite can be true with a grip of parallel low ESL MLCCs (some things need ripple current, obvs ckt dependent)...just throwin it out there. I think generally I only ever put a chonker electrolytic down these days: if it does save precious board space, building down to cost and there's a relevant assembly cost diff, actually need some outrageous voltage rating. Whatever it is, don't forget inrush ;)

I added `defer` to crescent (lang) last night. Seems like a straight-forward win in languages that support it. It was also a suprisingly easy feature to add. Args are evaluated at deferral time, calls are made LIFO when the enclosing scope closes.

Very suspicious of how simple it is actually. The only things I could think of were compiler warnings on non-unit return types and errors on `@must_check` and `@allocates` (will probably rename these annotations)
