Routers tend to come with short yellow crossover cables but they're not important, because for a long time now, devices work with either type: i.e. connecting two PCs they autodetect if one of them need to swap TX and RX.

@tael@yiff.life It has regular IK plus a combination of bone constraints and a driver with a scripted expression for each foot. It has a cyclic dependency so it has one frame of delay when editing, but it's unnoticeable in most situations.

@tael@yiff.life IK is what poses the whole leg when moving the IK target (the bone I'm grabbing to move the foot). Maybe you're thinking of physbones, not IK. The principle is similar, with constraints I could make it "collide" with a set of spheres, but the most common use case was for the floor, steps, etc. so I made it work to use a plane (defined by the position and orientation of the bone below).

I think it remains popular because people take advice from LLMs, which are out of date and wrong. It can be very frustrating to have an interest on local LLMs (using or training them) because most tools, tutorials, etc. are made _with_ LLMs so quality is generally abysmal, and most places that talk about LLMs are completely insufferable.

@dckim @thatKomputerKat I think that's fine because it incentivizes decentralization: You can migrate to a different instance that is more focused on a topic (therefore better local feeds), have more features or just higher post lengths. I set mine to 5000 too.

@Alkaris@meow.social What do you need it for, specifically? In KDE for example, to browse files there's already an "open as administrator" context menu option when a folder is not owned by the user, and all apps I know that require admin permissions (e.g. KDE partition manager, kdiskmark for some partitions, rustdesk when enabling or disabling the service, steam when setting up VR the first time, etc.) pops up a password dialog for admin access. For some other things (like access to a serial port), people shouldn't use sudo, but should add themselves to the appropriate group (uucp in the case of serial ports). That should probably be a feature of applications like Arduino IDE (to ask for admin access to add yourself to the group). Just running stuff as root can be problematic, not just because of security issues, but also because of littering the home directory with files that the user can't read.

And, for example, saying that a machine "thinks" is nothing new, I was saying that 20+ years ago whenever a computer was stuck doing something which would finish eventually. Particularly if it was a virtual game opponent (which we also called AI because the term has always been that broad).

@lynn I used to have a US power strip with schuko plug, which was very convenient for universal power adapters with US plugs, better than most passive options. Nowadays I tape/glue the passive adapters to the plugs/chargers so they don't get loose.

@cadey Technically you can, if you have another GPU that does the output. They _do_ have rasterizing units but much fewer than regular GPUs, so gaming performance out of the box leave a lot to be desired. I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to make a vulkan wrapper to replace rasterization shaders by compute shaders to take full advantage of these GPUs for graphics, at least on linux. Edit: in fact some existing rendering techniques like nanite already do rasterization in compute shaders (at least for meshlets with small triangles) instead of using regular rasterizer shaders.

@dckim @nixCraft chromium is just chrome without some proprietary parts, but still very integrated with Google services. Try ungoogled chromium if you need chrome, otherwise I suggest a non-chromium browser (which rule out almost every browser except e.g. firefox).

FWIW, there's plenty of people with various levels of social anxiety that can be in VRchat worlds with few people. I particularly enjoy being with 2-3 friends at most.

@anthropy @AVincentInSpace there are big open weight models that are comparable to closed ones, which you most likely would need to run from a remote provider, but at least most of those providers are small or don't lobby governments etc. Even if you worked at datacenters you may not be fully aware of the immense power these corporations have. Even if google and anthropic are "better" than oai and xai, they still can use their power to make life worse for everyone, and google does. For example android is going to become more of a walled garden than apple, which will have an impact in e.g. the amount of e-waste.

@anthropy If you keep using LLMs at least use open weights models exclusively. Don't give openai/anthropic/google the time of day. ANY use will signal demand for new data centers to be built. And open or not, be very aware of how easily they dumb you down. Deskilling is a serious issue. @AVincentInSpace

@sam4000 @davidrevoy prices of hardware has been rising alongside RAM, at least in the used market which is the only place I regularly check. My GPU that cost me 600€ more than a year ago is 750-800€ now. I don't know what are the falling prices you mention. LLMs of any size they're all shit, except for a few particular tasks, most of which don't require a GPU this expensive (or any GPU at all, if you have some patience). I keep a very small LM loaded at all times for image transcriptions and things like that. Most of my VRAM is used with Blender or VR stuff. I _could_ load much bigger models (when I'm not using the GPU for graphics) but I don't really need to.

@annika@xoxo.zone Am I the only one that doesn't see anything wrong with it? The thumbstick caps just slide out of the stick slightly until they touch the case. Stick drift is caused by wear on the potentiometers which only slide when you move the stick around, and not upwards/downwards. By the way, stop buying potentiometer based controllers. There are cheap controllers that use magnets instead. I got one for like 17€

Even if it's very unlikely and only for very urgent matters, that still has a cost (being able to interrupt a vacation). Also, it's not "paying more", it's just paying. Open source volunteers are unpaid, generally.
