Been awhile since I’ve had this out, came across it when looking for something else and figured I’d play with it a bit. Sure is very cute but very very slow, as I remember it being.

oops. As I was laying out this board I went “wow I sure picked an overly-fine pitch part for this buck regulator, weird!” but continued with layout anyways. I did not in fact choose a part with that fine a pitch.

My new-to-me Braille display (which I will post more about soon, I am very excited about it) has maybe the most satisfying charging animation of any device I’ve used. It feels very pleasant and makes a nice noise. #braille

@plzupgrademe@fedi.txw.ca I wish I could buy one with a more modern CPU, because they're super neat little machines! :) I used this one for field troubleshooting in dirty/dusty environments for awhile before it got replaced with a ToughBook.

I visited 6 different local datacentres today and said hi to a bunch of equipment I’m responsible for but that I had never seen in person. It was so much fun.

Hah, I hit print screen on a scope at the makerspace that I’m just learning to use (it’s older but 1GHz), then went “oh wait, I bet it’ll want a floppy for that”. But then something on it started whirring. Took me a second to realize the whirring was it doing what I’d asked, and this came out of a slot on the top!

@bonkers@nerdculture.de @never_released@mastodon.social I worked at an Itanium shop for awhile in the late 00s/early 2010s. Someday I want to get one for home to play with, but I don’t think I’ve seen any since I left that job in 2012!

The plywood for Franklin’s new shell came in while I was travelling for work, so started working on cutting it all to size today! Got two replacement roof panels, a replacement rear panel, and four window frames/mounts all traced and cut out. I don’t often do much woodworking at the shop, it’s fun once in awhile.

Next week my goal is to get the new front pieces cut and make a list of all the nuts/bolts/washers we need. #choochoo

I don't understand harassing other people for wearing a mask. It affects you not-at-all, I'm just walking down the street. The sky is currently orange and it looks foggy there's so much smoke, I've had asthma kill two friends and I am doing my best to not join them.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca 33-34 years of Linux here, installed a BSD box into my "production" (for senCloud anyways) network for the first time a few days ago. Loving it so far, feels like Linux used to (in a good way).

@WTL@mastodon.social direct connection between USB-C and the audio input ports on my hearing aids :) I’d usually use Bluetooth via a protocol converter box, but I have some long-ish flights coming up and the converter box’s battery only lasts 3-4h these days, so want to be able to do a cabled connection instead. That port is usually used for these little RF receivers which let me connect remote microphones up, but once in awhile direct audio input is handy.

@waffles I mentioned missing the 'old internet' sometimes to someone recently and they said "me too! flash games, kazaa and limewire, AIM..." It was at that point that I realized that their "old internet" is my "middle internet" :) Though if anything, old and middle have a lot more in common than middle and modern do.

@xan I think the last bit of X.25 gear I worked on was decommissioned in the mid-2000s, but it seemed like a Telco Thing to include something long past EOL as a reliable modern choice on their website :) I've never used AX.25 so far, but I'd like to someday! So much radio to do, so little time.

@WTL@mastodon.social I’m actually curious where these connectors come from, they’re so weird and I’ve never seen them on anything other than hearing aid stuff. They feel very 1970s to me, but I’ve never found a history of them.

@f4grx@chaos.social @adorfer@chaos.social @gsuberland@chaos.social it looks like they’re not what you might think when you hear “quadrax”, rather a lighter alternative to twisted pair with four wires inside a shield. https://www.gore.com/products/quad-cables-aerospace-defense-air-land I suspect this connector has two redundant gigabit Ethernet paths on it, since the vehicle it’s on is TTEthernet-based.

Quad Cables for Aerospace, Defense Air & Land Applications | Gore

GORE® Quad Cables offer tighter skew requirements with low crosstalk and controlled impedance ideal for high-speed serial data and video protocols. Lighter and more rugged, these quadrax cables feature dual differential pairs that routinely transfer bi-directional signals at speeds up to 1 GHz at lengths up to 30 meters (100 feet).

Found a price for the equivalent connector from another company (slightly different design but still 4x quadrax connectors in a vaguely D-ish shell), CAD$1850 each in qty 25.
