Recently renewed my subscription to Fastmail and realised I can offer 10% off the first year to other people (ofc if you sign up I get a little kickback too, full disclosure etc.)

If you're trying to escape GMail, and you heard some problematic news about Proton - try @fastmail@mastodon.social :)

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt I laughsnorted both because it is true and because the mental image of a layer of flailing, braying men all piled up on top of each other was just too funny

I can't decide if they are really coming back, or if they never really went away - just that veneer was over it - the big platforms were getting our attention and we collectively forgot how to surf the web.
It's totally fine that platforms exist for those who aren't interested in building their own places on the web.
Maybe it is coming back some, because the current social media mess is helping a new generation to see beyond the feeds, and try their own hand at building the web.

Oh gah I really need to keep up with the CSS Joy applicants... Sorry to anyone who is waiting on me!
To everyone else, enjoy a browse:
(If you come across a broken site, or one with missing or unfindable webring links, let me know. I do occasionally do the round myself but don't always find the time!)

@urlyman@mastodon.social hm, I think that's how I was taught to quote when I was at school in Britain in the 90s. I've never liked it, but that's how it works. It's the same with speech in books.

This is where GDPR helps. The privacy system asks what country you're in, presumably to figure out whether they have to honour my request or not.
I realise this annoyance is nothing compared to the people needing help, who are using these services. As such, I'm glad they exist, and I know they need to find themselves too somehow.
Ugh just ugh let me donate without having yet another account or ghost account created. We should be making this easy.

I like this a lot!

An ebike without a battery - but super-capacitors. Charges on easy flats and downhills, then will have enough to help you up the hills when you need it.
It might still not be enough for say, Bristol or a town in the Alps, especially if you need to go uphill immediately from home - but for lots of cities this would get people over the humps of "I want to cycle but oh no but hills, but sweaty, but battery charging/exploding" woes.

@mattwilcox@mstdn.social I agree, but I have also fully struggled with this all my life.
All the regrets I chalked up to my own personal failures, laziness, lack of diligence, carelessness - were always hard to forgive myself for. And every time I did it again meant more self-flagellation. Why do I never learn, etc.
Getting diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year has finally brought me some inner peace.
It's not an excuse. But gives me some compassion for my past self, given what I've had to push through.

Got an issue where a custom emoji from a font file isn't working in Firefox on MacOS, but we're not even seeing the normal OS emoji as fallback.
Any ideas?

@kagan@wandering.shop @markwyner@mas.to at this point (I've promised some more away) I can't send more for now as I'll need to keep them for conf time in June.
I'll see what I can do for if/when I order a new batch though! Of course I should have expected that posting about them excitedly would have people wanting some 😅

@bencurthoys@mastodon.social it's hard! Our kids have access to tablets but the time they use them is very limited.
I sort of plan that as they get older, we have some family pool smartphones, that they can use when leaving the house for the things these phones do well - maps, location sharing (with their consent once they are older ofc) - and on those I think whatsapp etc will be there, but on the understanding that anyone in the family might see it.
Teenagerhood does need privacy too, so will have to see...

I think a lot of it is overworked doctors too. Not having enough time to think carefully about a patient. Sometimes all they can do is skim notes and make snap decisions.

@alexandra@social.lol I reckon it's a mess systemically (inherent sexism, racism) and also because of some older doctors not keeping up to date on stuff. Also they see so so so many people they often lean too hard on the most common likelihood - but yes it suuuuuucks.

I try and chill my reactions out and imagine the asshole is having a bad day. We're all assholes on bad days. Or weeks, or years.
Sometimes for the protection of others you have to try and do something about the assholes though - like the one likely driving at 90+ km/h in a 30km/h residential zone, who served across a crossroads and nearly hit me and my children... The free pass and compassion goes away as soon as their actions can physically or mentally hurt someone else.

@echo@toot.cat thank you! Yes I bought some different keys for the arrows, because on that keyboard layout it is almost impossible to use them without looking - so I wanted them to be clearly different. You might be able to see I added little bumpy heart shaped nail stickers, so I could feel them too.
