Bearded geek, loudmouth, lover of hats, good food, strange music, games, language, plastic model kits and lots of other stuff.

Beginner but enthusiastic Ukulele player, complete beginner at acoustic guitar. Yes, I like to suck at many things at the same time.

So... Which app are you using for Mastodon lately? Any juicy updates, or new ones? The feature I want the most is being good at keeping its spot in the timeline, so that I can scroll (up, ideally) towards the present without missing too much stuff. I follow few enough people that I can actually exhaust my feed, so that's neat. #fedi #Fediverse #Mastodon

@RaymondPierreL3@aus.social @paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange there are documented cases where a clean new phone without social media apps has been considered proof of suspicious behavior by border agents and reason for imprisonment with no lawyer for hours, or days.

@appassionato@mastodon.social one of the most absurd aspects is that (if my understanding is correct) the whole "mining deep sea nodules" is based on fake science research papers published by the CIA to justify the GLOMAR Explorer "scientific expedition", and building the ship. All because they needed a cover story to the mission to try and steal a Russian sub (which failed, BTW). The incident that gave the world "we cannot confirm nor deny" also gave us "seabed mining" (99% of it is a financial scam).

You know... a lot of things suck in the world, so I'll spread some joy: a couple of young musicians and sound guys in Genoa (Italy) were inspired by the NPR Tiny Desk concerts (Indoor, a handful of ppl in the audience, but genuine and with extra good audio and video quality) and they went and made their own.

It's called Live From The Docks (Genoa is a port city after all) and they had two episodes so far. 1/2

#music (and tagging @etherdiver@ravenation.club for good measure)

@shadowfals@toot.cat @DeltaWye@tiggi.es @feliks@chaos.social a Masto mutual has successfully asked a support chatbot to write silly poetry in another language, and other things. Remember: "guard rails" are entirely fictional and the only real protection would be parsing the meaning of the queries... And if that was possible you wouldn't need LLMs, would you?

@oliversampson@sigmoid.social @JamesPadraicR@mastodon.social @cstross@wandering.shop @DJGummikuh@mastodon.social @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange the Düsseldorf ruling about Fender is... The opposite of that though? It was ruling by default (no defendant) and the judge accepted enthusiastically the bullshit "work of art" argument by Fender's lawyers.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange isn't that something like... Aiding and Abetting? Not an expert, but... If they're literally factoring it in their books, that's not even basic due diligence.

@elilla@transmom.love uh.. I never put 2 and 2 together... In Italian we say "stonato come una campana" (out of tune like a bell), very likely because church bell towers with more than one bell (a lot do) would commonly produce spicy disharmonies when the bells are ringing together (also because making a giant metal thing and also have it perfectly tuned must be very hard). I seem to remember the guy in the Rob Scallon video about the bell tower carillon saying how hard it is to make them sound "pretty".

Replying to
@elilla@transmom.love the craft of instrument making is just amazing. And most of these building techniques were developed without access to sound analysis tools... Just good ear, and math. The recent video about violin making (again on Scallon's channel) was delightful (so MUCH manual labor).

@cstross@wandering.shop do you remember the agriculture company on the NYSE that woke up to being suspended for excessive price growth because the "rational investors" were buying their stock wholesale... Because they had "com" in their name? Something like "Agricom Corp" or somesuch. In 1999 you didn't even need a vaporware product presentation.

@Judd @satchel the migration functionality was introduced after I first tried Masto and after my first migration, and that time I had to export my contacts and reimport them (and people had to re-allow follow, if not automatic). The second time, I used the new functionality and it was pretty smooth IIRC
