We have these magical and amazing machines and we’ve made everything so miserable to use and we’ve made a million little papercuts that prevent you from generally doing something interesting with them. It’s lack of imagination at the system level at best, and it’s active suppression of creativity and ability at its worst.

Ok #netbsd fans. I have an x1 carbon from 2023. It’s running Arch and that’s all good. But I’m very very motivated to swim in the waters of a bsd system. My interests and uses normally involve games and graphics explorations. I just want to be able to use the intel gpu with sdl3 basically. And sadly this is a hidpi system so I’m always worried whether getting a usable display for my aging eyesight is achievable. Does anyone have words of caution here for me? Is it known to not work in some capacity? I’ve seen the wiki/docs and it sure seems doable but maybe someone has personal experience they can share? cc: @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org @d6@merveilles.town

My studio monitors weren’t getting much use for the past year. I connected them to my record player and…. boah geil.

The full range on some of these LPs is *amazing*, and while I don’t think vinyl is inherently better in some way, it’s definitely true that a proper mix/master combined with a pair of speakers that can be driven fully by the mix is amazing to experience.

I 100% hear how crushed and compressed most things are in their streaming service delivery now. And the services also normalize levels a bit for predictability. Which is also totally fine. My head phones and car listening are entirely different situations.

This mirrors my new awareness of how badass HDR displays are.

@lritter@mastodon.gamedev.place are you using Slang with SDL GPU? I have been using SDL_shadercross and HLSL up until now and I recall reading that Slang had some issues with the library. But maybe it’s the past and worth reevaluating?

@netbsd as a follow up if you aren’t too bothered, if I wanted to follow along any work on this area where is the right place to start? Are there many contributors working on this? If I understand correctly the graphics stack is a port/shim from Linux. Is help wanted at the moment?

@rygorous @aeva I loved the rest of this thread and only want to chime in here that I absolutely appreciate your blog and often read and reread posts even after years go by. Sometimes, especially the more mathematics related topics, when I say I have a hard time grappling with it it’s not because it isn’t explained well. I think (too late in my 40s) I have a strong learning disability related to just numbers *in general*. I learn how to hold things and use them for desired results, but to explain how difficult it is to *understand* things is like trying to describe a color nobody else sees. Someone with a firm grip on the subject who is taking great care to illuminate things should hopefully never feel like they’ve failed in some way just because there are folks out there like me. The blogs and info dumps are welcome and meaningful in this world. And the care to explain clearly is totally seen.

@bruces I’ve ordered the bug-burger whenever I’ve seen it on a menu and enjoyed it each time. It’s barely different than a typical veggie burger (the ones that don’t try too hard to imitate beef texture I mean). To me, the idea hasn’t caught on because people don’t truly understand how endangered the current food supply chain is. The unbelievable magic done everyday by our agricultural, energy, and water systems are so easily ignored and forgotten that it’ll take an enormous upset to that before people are really able to overcome stigmas around eating insects instead of fish or mammals.

Ted Chiang lays it out clearly. I’m not sure I’d use all the same analogies as he has, but his points are absolutely solid.

@mxk@hachyderm.io ah right. That’s 7.1 and on. I’m stuck on an older Intel Atom system for the moment. Considering an AdaCore eval but the likelihood of the company wanting to shell out is sliiiim. Will just add to costs for the product and extend the recoup timeframe. Meanwhile, getting a working rustc for the platform seems a lot more likely. I wish it weren’t so. Spark is nice.

When I worked for Dreamworks we had a wrap party at the Paladium. Never saw a show there though. Probably should have.

Anybody around familiar with building rustc? I’ve got it building for qnx and it’s failing at the license scraper for my patched cc-rs. Maybe it can’t find the local path? I’ve had to point every usage in the various Cargo.tomls in the rust repo to my modified cc-rs and libc crates.

Is there a way to skip this step? I’m here trying to prove viability of something and not trying to properly submit patches and so on.

What I love about printmaking in the broadest possible sense is how the process produces so many interesting and beautifully tactile artifacts. I think every printmaker probably has a similar feeling of excitement when seeing something in progress or getting to wander through a shop. The arrangements, the smells, the improvised tools carefully at work, the sounds of scraping and wiping or the tack of ink on the brayer, the feel of the felt blankets. And depending on who’s running the shop that day, their music on a boombox somewhere. The work produced at the end has two amazing stories to tell. The image itself and the artist, but then the process and craft.
