@edri@eupolicy.social Another consortium of renewable power companies with a small (5 MW) DC operator should propose to add some computing and then spend 95 % of the money on offshore wind power. The wind mills collect data for machine learning aka AI. The only problem is how to convert the computing capacity of one wind turbine into units of "H100-equivalent", so you can get to the 25k requirement of the tender. Experts in fluid dynamics to estimate the information bandwidth of one turbine vs. that of a GPU's.

Higher scores may be awarded to proposals that would develop and deploy a European-based and controlled software stack (cloud and AI) that will be integrating, as much as possible, open-source solutions either during Phase 1 or within year 4 after Operational Readiness (T0). Part of the reason I find generative "AI" peddlers so tiresome, I suspect, is that they regurgitate so much of the playbook of the worst Hegelian/Marxist cliché.

"Follow me, for I represent the FUTURE! How do I know the future, or why do I think the future is better than the present, you ask? Shut up, traitor!"

Do we really have to have this debate all over again?

Anyway, I've added a couple quotations from #KarlPopper on moral futurism, anti-rationalism and mysticism.

I see that the European Commission is adopting that well-tested method for "simplification", called "let's rewrite all basic definitions in the law from scratch and throw 10 years of court rulings out of the window, so we can start anew!".

My #ThinkPad x1 carbon gen1 (manufactured November 2011) still serves me well, but the keyboard has started giving up. I've ordered a backup keyboard for 40 € from some HK seller, let's see what happens...

(I'm positive I had a backup keyboard stashed somewhere, but maybe I lost it when I moved several years ago, or maybe it's still in Milan.)

"Snack responsibly", says the #Oreo package. A bit rich to say when you are basically a saturate solution of sugar in palm oil.

(A portion is officially 2 pieces or 22 g.)

I end up buying Oreos when travelling because they are often the only recognisable #vegan option in vast areas of central Europe where it's apparently mandatory to add a drop of butter or cow milk in every bakery product just for the sake of it.

Excellent news from #Facebook:

«“If you deliver $100 in ads to Italy, where there is a 3% location fee, you will be charged $100 (ad delivery), plus $3 (location fee), for $103 total,” the company wrote. “Note that any applicable VAT will be calculated on top of the total amount.”»

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-03-10/meta-hikes-fees-for-advertisers-to-cover-europe-s-digital-taxes

Every little additional friction in the #AdTech market helps fight #MassSurveillance. (If nothing else, at least the tax will help measure the epidemic.)

@Laurielle AM34 passed with 307 votes and the final text only got 228. The 80 votes lost (mostly among Greens, Left, Renew) were presumably people who voted for the amendment not because they liked it but because they knew EPP wouldn't like it. 157 MEPs in the EPP voted against the amendment and 137 ended up voting against the final text once it passed. @mpe Thank you for sharing your journey with us. (I have nothing useful to say most of the time, maybe I have here.) By making a static website you already did most of the work. OVH allows to renew a domain name for up to 10 years (not all TLDs). I've never managed to renew the associated static hosting for more than 3 years. I suppose the gratis hosting plan (100 MB) might vanish any time. A shared (nonprofit/coop) hosting might be more durable, e.g. Codeberg Pages or Autistici/Inventati.

In hindsight, this January 13 announcement was significant:

«The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72 conducted a live fire Close In Weapon System exercise on 8 January 2026, according to information published by the U.S. Department of War. The drill confirmed the carrier’s ability to defeat close-range aerial and surface threats while operating in a strategically sensitive region.»

@liaizon Fair enough. BTW the same can be said about email these days: to create a gmail account you probably need a SIM which in many countries requires valid ID. So we exclude even the lowest possible threshold of official/monetary authentication. Now we're left only with person-to-person trust. It's ok, but it requires a lot of work from some volunteers, so that's another form of inequality that emerges.

@liaizon Yes, I know how to get email addresses and SIMs without verification. But then I also knew how to get a bank account in Finland on day 2 of moving here, while other people I know (also very literate, EU citizens and everything) had to spend days of phone calls and months of wall clock time to get there. So it's easy to misjudge the impacts of seemingly trivial requirements/participation filters. It's common for some admins to restrict account creation to a few known domains.

Say an event is organised by an EU-based association for its own members which requires a payment of 0.01 € to an euro-denominated bank account for membership, is that still bad?
