@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org One of the homeowners interviewed (btw why I am saying "homeowner" rather than "investor"?) purchased a beach house on a dune for about $500,000 in 2011. Then, "about 250 feet of dune were between the front porch and the Atlantic." "For years, the house seemed like a good investment. The property value rose and hit nearly $1 million just two years ago. But the beach eroded, and today the home is uninhabitable."

That Three Good Things is inspired by the memorial service for my friend Gail. I want to share some of the stories people told with Fedi. Once, someone moved here and didn't have a car yet. She walked up to the town dump (where Gail held court) to ask about renting a car. "Sure, jump in, I'll drive you to where I have another truck. Can you drive stick?" "Yes, I can." "That's lucky, because if you couldn't, you'd have to use the van we're in, and what if someone dies on the island this week? This is the island hearse!" Gail ran the dump on the principle of reuse, repair, and recycle. I think every house on this island has something she rescued from the waste stream and displayed until a new owner could be found. I especially appreciated this when I was clearing out my father's shed and trying to pass on some of his tools; Gail always knew who would appreciate a hand-me-down tackle box, can of paint, or chainsaw. All the island dogs loved Gail, because she gave them hugs and biscuits at the dump. She often dog sat a miniature poodle, and when people saw the poodle with his owners, they would ask, "Who are you and what are you doing with Gail's dog?"

Just read news coverage about the Brown econ class where the scores on the take-home, no-gen-AI-allowed midterm were astoundingly high and the scores on the proctored final exam were much lower (among the students who didn't just drop the class when the prof announced the final would be proctored) I would like to be friends with Student 22, who got the lowest score on the midterm (not so far below the historical midterm average though) and then scored a bit higher - and above the threshold for passing - on the proctored final. That is grit!

I know that I am a crank on this topic - in the Cory Doctorow sense: "Cranks can be right or they can be wrong, but we’re hard to be in coalition with, because we are uncompromisingly passionate about things that other people largely don’t even notice, let alone care about." But, for better or for worse, I think I will always see my work as a medical librarian through the frame of evidence-based medicine coming to grips (or not) with the fact of SARS-CoV-2 being airborne.

@ajayiyer@mastodon.social In the Lens, you can query for a topic, then use the filters to remove articles from publishers you want to avoid, as I have done here: https://www.lens.org/lens/search/scholar/list?q=field_of_study:%22Sustainability%22&p=0&n=10&s=_score&d=%2B&f=false&e=false&l=en&authorField=author&dateFilterField=publishedYear&orderBy=%2B_score&presentation=false&preview=true&stemmed=true&useAuthorId=false&publicationType.must=journal%20article&publisher.mustNot=Elsevier%20BV&publishedYear.from=2020&publishedYear.to=2026 After that, you can go to the Journal filter to see the relative prevalence of different journals that remain in your search results set.

All these expert quotes contrasting hantavirus which only transmits via "close contact" with other viruses that are "exceedingly contagious via an airborne route" - where were these people when the IPC experts on HICPAC were saying that hospital infection control policies only have to worry about ballistic droplets?

That particular case, I'm sure could be automated to a greater degree. But I don't know why generative AI would need to be involved. It's like people think that there was no automation before 2022?

Personally I think that a lot of the paperwork for spending money seems like busywork -- really, you want me to check the box in a spreadsheet that I am not going to travel to Iran or North Korea or Cuba, then have my boss print it out and sign it, then have the department admin scan it, all so I can participate in a free online conference? -- but maybe someone with knowledge of compliance processes could pick out better than I can which bits of the process are busywork and which are actually necessary

Well I finally scoped out different car insurance options, and every single new company offered me several hundred dollars cheaper than the policy from my current insurer. So, as much as it's infuriating that I'll have to do it again in a year, it's good that I pulled myself together and sorted it out.

Why do journals articulate different article types but then refrain from giving you any convenient way to look at their "perspectives" versus their "commentaries" versus their "brief reports" versus their "letters" to figure out what the definitions mean in practice?

Hoorah hoorah!
ACS has finally sorted out Environmental Health Perspectives DOIs

or, wait

some of them are sorted, like https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp16791. And some are not, like https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp16791.

On the one hand: from spot 291 on the waiting list to borrowing the new #Murderbot in two days - hoorah!

On the other hand: I don't feel great knowing that my public library paid several multiples more than individual consumers pay for digital copies that "expire" after 2 years or 26 loans.

On the other, other hand: do I know anyone in #Illinois? Please call your state senator and ask them to support House Bill 5236, The Digital Library Protection Act. This bill, which passed the Illinois House 99-0, will prevent publishers from restricting a library's ability to determine loan periods, from charging libraries more than the public for the same item, or from limiting the number of licenses a library can acquire after an item is available to the public.

Turns out that all the paperwork produced by Mr. Local Govt Official's department calls this location by the name of a different street. Of course no one was complaining about bike safety at this location - you told people it was on a quiet side street 250 yards away.

BTW based on the fact that the appendix is linked right after the phrase "well-designed prompt" you might expect that the appendix talks about how the prompt was created, iterated, tested -- but no. The appendix has the prompt (which is better than nothing) but nothing about why the authors are so confident that it is designed well.

Never mind -- apparently it's a known issue that the audio and captions only show up at minute 9 of the recording.
(Why that "known issue" took a 70-minute help chat to find out....)

Favor from anyone out there with an HBO Max subscription -- can you try streaming stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia and tell me if you have sound or captions? Thank you!
(not just sound in the preliminary ads, but for the actual program)
