Boosting from yesterday with additional thoughts about this piece of work on future costs of @scholcomm with @MsPhelps@akademienl.social

1. This is a pretty cool demonstration of using #openresearchinformation at scale. We query the whole of OpenAlex and OpenAIRE data with a complex set of organisation identifiers. The use of ROR - Research Organization Registry identifiers in both sources makes this not just possible, but pretty easy.

2. Because we can use the data at scale with no license restrictions we can combine it.

3. It's not just about big data. Releasing small datasets of locally curated data enables new kinds of analysis. Here both Bibsam and CAUL released relevant data sets that we could use to enrich the analysis.

4. Finally, we no access to fancy exclusive compute capacity. This was all done using easily accessible tools and resources. While they're not free, they're easy to access and surprisingly cheap to use, even at this scale

Can we afford the future?

With costs in the scholarly publishing system continuing to rise, while resources do not, the pressure on library consortia to make strategic choices for their investments continues to rise. Last week we presented our work on evidence at the #LIBER2026 conference.

Building on work commissioned by IReL with @MsPhelps@akademienl.social we have built an analytics pipeline that supports a scenario planning tool, projecting consortium costs into the future under different scenarios. Using data from #CAUL and #Bibsam we show how publicly available metadata can be used to build publishing profiles as well as modelling publishing services costs. Where public data is available a full detailed analysis is possible.

What's better than open research information resource? Multiple open research information resources that can be combined together!

Today we're starting ORION, an effort to coordinate amongst those making ORI resources available in the cloud, with an initial focus on Google BigQuery.

We are keen to coordinate with all who are interested in supporting a community effort towards availability and reusability!

One for the #reproducibility nerds

Is there an accepted standard (or just some good examples) of how to include provenance metadata within computationally produced images

My specific use case is graphs generated by plotly (python) saved as png where I'd like to record some things like date, software version, data version in the image metadata

There are exif elements for date and "software" but is there a better solution than just shoving info in the description and/or title field? Something that can survive passage through a presentation an added bonus!

(And yes, I do want this in the image metadata, not as a separate file, I'll use the same info to write out a separate manifest)

The release of the 2025 Leiden Ranking marks an series of critical steps towards a more open research information system.

It is great to see the Open Edition placed side by side with the traditional version of Ranking. Debates continue on the qualities and risks of moving to fully open research information systems. Putting the evidence together is key to having an informed conversation.

But perhaps more exciting for me is the opportunity it illustrates to expand the Ranking and make it more inclusive.

My main criticism of the Leiden Ranking methodology has always been that it excludes non-English and diverse outputs that don't fit into the definition of "core" journals.

Now we can see how that inclusion shifts the picture. And as always the work and the data from the @cwts@social.cwts.nl shows the highest standards of technical quality and transparency.

This is a great step forward and demonstration of what can be done with Open Research Information

@gedankenstuecke@scholar.social It doesn't sound like in common with you unfortunately! I've got Future of Open Research in a week, FORCE26, LIBER, STI and PIDFest on my dance card this year (now I write it out that seems like an awful lot!)

Maybe some good news with respect to infrastructure systems and modes of ownership?

Dear Hive Mind. Looking for good examples from ~2015 of scholarly or scholarly adjacent services/infrastructures failing.

I've got examples of corporate capture, but struggling to find examples of actual closure because they've left very little trace

Friendfeed is one example, alongside a million other social media offerings, but I'm looking for something that the general scholarly reader would recognise and remember ideally

@paco Nothing going wrong (well not yet anyway). Was wondering whether someone had already done something or if there was any standard approach, specifically for scientific images where people tend to have strong opinions about how things should be done. Should be able to use pillow or pngmeta to add the metadata. Just a question of whether I can add value by choosing a specific format or location

@quachpas dc certainly makes sense. And if I did it super properly if I end up in XML there's things like PROV as well Some brief experimentation showed that XMP metadata seems to be preserved for (otherwise untouched) images that have been inserted into Google Slides and OO Impress presentations and then exported back out (Google doesn't make it easy but I found a way) Obviously not to be relied on but a potentially useful backup in some cases.

Question for font nerds! The attached image is from a 1896 lithograph (Orr's Southern Stars, published by Gall and Inglis, engraving possibly William Peacock and co) .

I'm interested in knowing a) whether this is a specific type font and/or b) what a close modern font might be (ideally an accessible or openly licensed one)

Very excited to see the Open Edition of the Leiden Ranking launched:

https://open.leidenranking.com

Culmination of a lot of work by @cwts@social.cwts.nl team lead by @LudoWaltman@social.cwts.nl and a big effort from the @OpenAlex@mastodon.social to make all of this possible along with @MsPhelps@akademienl.social @LucyMontgomery_@toot.community and the CWTS technical team led by @neesjanvaneck@social.cwts.nl

Our course #Scientometrics with #OpenData was really fun to give the first time around with @MsPhelps@akademienl.social @neesjanvaneck@social.cwts.nl and @LudoWaltman@social.cwts.nl and 30 participants. So much, that we're planning to run it again!

If you missed out, or the timezones weren't right for you then there's a second opportunity to take part:

@biocs I think CiteULike is a little more complex a story because it gets tied up with market challenges after the Mendeley purchase but its a good find. And yes, I keep following rabbit holes back to my own blog - where apparently I didn't actually document many closures, just the purchases...hence the call for help! :-)

Question for the #Nordics #scandics #svensk What is the history of saffron in Sweden? Santa Lucia buns are obviously a thing but thinking mostly about swedish fish soup which is heavy on the saffron. There must be story about how something cheap (fish, presumably) ends up combined with something that must have been hideously expensive (the saffron) in what is presumably a celebratory but also a hearty dish with lots of options to supplement?

Also shout out to Borgeby Kryddgård in Bjärred who make a really good fish soup spice kit!

@egonw OpenPHACTS raises another case which is interesting. Where the organisation/project stops or finishes but elements of the products continue, sometimes quite successfully. I don't know about this case specifically but it looks like the website has gone but there were contributions to the github repository up to 2022
