Recently got a marine science PhD. Now doing data science stuff with river flow data, and learning te reo Māori.

A sci-fi/fantasy nerd, gamer geek (board games, video games, ttrpg), and into fiction writing.

Reasonably good cook (specialising in soups and stews), a novice vegetable gardener.

A (probably (undiagnosed)) autistic transgender Chinese-American.

I'm also mwt@toot.garden. I post interchangeably from both here and there depending which I'm looking at at the time.

This morning's 3am bright idea: home hydro!

We have options for residential solar and wind power already, so why not also hydro?
Rain falls from the sky onto your roof, then flows into the gutters, then down a drainpipe to the ground and on into the stormwater system. What if we put a bunch of tiny spinny wheels inside the drainpipe? Think of all the electricity we could generate during all those once-in-a-century tropical storms that have started hitting us multiple times a year!

I guess now we just need some engineers to redesign the basic drainpipe to optimise spinny wheel spinning, and make it accessible for maintenance.

I still passed the class (with a C!) because the grading curve was very low...

I find myself in possession of a solar panel. It has a plug outlet that is round with two round holes in it. Does anyone have any idea whether this connector has a name, and/or what I could plug this into (other than the out-of-production system it originally belonged to)?

Today a cyclist came up from behind me and rang their bell!

So now that's a 0.01% bell ringing rate for cyclists passing me from behind, and a 99.99% bell ringing rate when I'm the cyclist. Only 99.98% more to go before other cyclists are even!

It's becoming more often that I walk into a shop in Nelson and the entire staff pretend I don't exist. And clearly don't want to be stuck helping me with anything if they can help it.

I did not miss this at all about the southeastern U.S. and wish it hadn't followed me here.

Booked an Airbnb for Wellycon. It's in Wellington, paid for in NZD out of my bank account that is also in NZD. Come the time that the bill was due, surprise! International transaction fee!

It turns out that overseas processing of transactions now come with this fee regardless of currency used, at least at Kiwibank.

I don't suppose someone wants to start an NZ-only equivalent to Airbnb that works like TradeMe...?

#eqnz First time I've actually felt an earthquake in this house.

Then I came here to confirm that it was one, before anyone else including the bot started posting about it, and was weirded out for a few minutes "if that wasn't an earthquake wtf was it?" And then everyone else finally said something (whew!).

Roofers here to fixthe leak that I reported two months ago. They didn't bring their own electricity and have tools plugged into the house. This is reasonable grounds to pay $10 less rent when it's next due, right?

@nickofnz Trying my best to choose solar here. Sadly I live on the south side of a tall hill in a rented house with a whole bunch of trees uphill of me, and even with 500 watts of portable solar panels, it's questionable whether I'll have enough sunlight to fully charge the portable generators all winter. But at least I'm on the solar ladder!

@SevenDeadlyExes Well for starters, everything that currently depends on volunteers to have time and resources would no longer have trouble finding volunteers. Families would be healthier and happier since not only would all their basic needs be met, so would all their other needs because everyone would have time to take care of each other. The environment would be healthier because of all the aforementioned volunteers that have time to go out there and plant all the trees and trap all the invasive pests and etc. There would be a lot more creative works (art, music, fiction, etc). The internet and tech world would be made up of open-source everything with excellent documentation.

@corbden well in mine there was a tiny fuse, and the instructions said to not leave it in if not using, because it would degrade the battery. Well, it was in there when I got it, so that's probably why it died.

@corbden mine came with a portable generator. The generator sat around unused too long and went kaput though, so the original owner has recycled it (and left me with the panel which still works fine). I too am hoping to find a battery/inverter/thingy to plug it into so I can benefit from solar power while stuck being a renter. :)

It's the part about having to use my own phone and then to also have my own phone service (seriously why do the restaurants that have them not also have free wifi). We encountered these QR codes a lot while visiting Melbourne and Brisbane last year, and we hadn't bothered to buy phone service while there, and the public city wifi was ... inconsistent, at best.

@BobLefridge @ClareBear I guess I should clarify - the entire staff pretends that I don't exist while being effusively friendly, chatty, and helpful to all the white customers in the place. Because they are putting off having to talk to me for as long as possible. And the white customers (especially the old white customers) are happy to oblige. Some of them get all up in my personal space like I'm not there. It's not like I'm important enough to be next in line in front of them. #racism

@Yehuda I'm borderline visually impaired insofar as I'm old and often looking at tiny images on my phone screen, so I read alt text to find out what I'm looking at. It's especially helpful if the image has text (cartoons etc). When I write alt text I mostly aim for context rather than literal visual description of everything in the picture.

@corbden my current idea is to just get a small portable battery/inverter with household plug outlets avaliable, to plug in my one solar panel. We could put it outside in the garden, run a cord through the window, and power the TV. So far I'm still digging around for the Internet to explain how to do that without installing ten more panels and equipment on the house... I guess I should look into generators.

@screwturn @corbden It's a 50W panel. I'm vaguely thinking to replace the plug with something more common, and then probably would just charge a few devices. I haven't done anything with it since my original post. Instead I bought a bunch of new panels and portable generators, and have been tinkering with those.

@ExtinctionR@social.rebellion.global That's awesome for Spain. But: “I'd prefer to be dependent on China for the import of solar panels and batteries, than I would, for oil and gas coming from the Gulf, and I'll tell you why: because if I buy that solar panel, that battery, that wind turbine, that transformer, I buy it once every 25 years. I don't have to buy it every day.” ... makes me think that soon there will be capitalists working out ways to build in planned obsolescence and enshittification. :(
