@tj For some reason, we ended up with ultrawide screens and tiny 5 pixel wide scroll bars. It drives me nuts. It is one of the worst modern design trends out there (along with infinite scroll and the overuse of "bubbles and/or glass everywhere" design).

@inthehands Hot Take: Joanne hasn't produced a good story since 2000. The first few Harry Potter installments were kind of interesting but the series quickly devolved after the novelty factor wore off and some of her more problematic ideology started shining through. I have been able to sample some of the newer "Fantastic Beasts" films and... Boy are they terrible. This is one boycott that will be easy to for me to follow (especially since I stopped wanting to give her money and attention around a decade ago).

It's been more than two months since I legally changed my name and Login.gov still refuses to recognize who I am... All of this verification is so that I can go present my license in person at the local post office. It got really crazy over the last weekend when I got it to accept my ID... Only to get rejected at the post office because the Login.gov site was asking for an ID that never existed (the ID type was wrong and the expiration date was both wrong and impossible for the given ID type). :thisisfine: I tried calling their 24x7 customer service but the only "service" they offer is to go over the troubleshooting steps on their knowledge base website. In the end, they told me that I would not be able to use their services at this time and that I should try ID.ME as an alternative. They also told me that I would just have to do all of my business at the local SSA office if I couldn't get the ID.ME alternative to work out.   Note: I didn't use ID.ME given it's private ownership and I didn't use the facial scan option because I've been trying to avoid that style of privacy invading tech. The "verify at the post office" option is the only real privacy preserving option that they offer. #LoginGov #US #SSA #DOGE #verification

@SamanthaJaneSmith@lgbtqia.space I have been feeling much the same way. It seems like a pointless spectacle to distract people from the problems happening at home. I guess I would be more enthusiastic about it if there were some actual tangible benefit to it other than the space colonization angle. It is hard to be enthusiastic about Team USA when the government is operating as a highly destructive anti-science criminal enterprise.

@ColesStreetPothole @lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I always liked the 7th season "reboot" episode, "The Void." I feel it's a microcosm of what the writers originally wanted out of the series before reality dictated otherwise.

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek That was another flaw in the original Voyager premise... In order to do the premise right, the show needed to constantly switch up the baddie roster as the ship moved closer to home. I don't think that Paramount's executives were ready or willing to part with the budget required to really pull that off in the last 1990s.

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I agree. Voyager may have been slightly behind on the story front (mainly due to external factors)... But a large majority of the cast and crew treated it like an opportunity of a lifetime and gave it their all anyway.

@StarkRG @ColesStreetPothole @lxskllr @MirrorAyako @tomte @startrek Originally, Kim was supposed to be written out during the events of "Favorite Son" but they backed out of that ending (probably due to last minute executive interference). I think his treatment in "Scorpion" was due to the writers wanting to keep the option to dump him after season three on the table just in case they got a last minute "stay of execution" order for Kes.

@ColesStreetPothole @lxskllr @MirrorAyako @tomte @startrek Additional Trivia: There is an initial draft version of the season-wide "Year of Hell" pitch hidden in the episode "Before and After." In the episode, they show Kes investigating an alien weapon during the Year of Hell. Why Kes? Because the original plan was to drop Harry Kim from the show and keep Kes on it. I think that writers were forced into reconsidering their plans by studio leadership during the development of the final season three installment, "Scorpion."

@ColesStreetPothole @MisophonicSpree @lxskllr @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I think that the premise of Voyager and Enterprise would have done better in a later era or under different leadership. The lack (and later refusal) of serialization really killed the original concept behind those two series right from the start.

@lxskllr @JSteven @StarkRG @ColesStreetPothole @MirrorAyako @tomte @startrek The show producers fought with Berman and company when they were creating "Scorpion." The producers wanted to keep the Borgified look of Voyager around for most of season four because cleaning up that amount of damage would take a while. Berman insisted that it had to go back to "normal" immediately after the episode because studio management did not want to "serialize" the show too much. Eventually they negotiated a truce: Voyager got Borgified only for the "Scorpion" two-parter plus the episode set immediately after it, "The Gift."

@lxskllr @StarkRG @ColesStreetPothole @MirrorAyako @tomte @startrek From my limited understanding: Deep Space Nine was the Star Trek show to work on. It was a great working environment and everyone tended to enjoy the experience. Voyager was almost the exact opposite. It was a toxic work environment and many people resented working on it. It was such a toxic environment that series veteran Ronald D. Moore decided to quit instead of write for Voyager during season 6 (he briefly transferred over after DS9 wrapped).

@lxskllr @MisophonicSpree @ColesStreetPothole @sezduck @MirrorAyako @startrek I would have preferred it if they took their time in the delta quadrant and then had one big jump back towards the end of series. In my opinion, that framing would have better sold the vastness of the area. Plus that treatment would have opened the door to more character exploration episodes featuring themes such as "Starfleet vs. Marquis" and "Diplomacy vs. Survival."

@lxskllr @JSteven @StarkRG @ColesStreetPothole @MirrorAyako @tomte @startrek It seemed like the Voyager production crew was always fighting with Berman over serializing the show during the Piller and Taylor years (seasons 1-4). There seemed to be a difference of opinion between the producers who needed serialization to successfully pull off the series and the studio executives who wanted to stick with the traditional TNG format in an attempt to generate TNG-sized ratings for the fledgling UPN TV network.

@ColesStreetPothole @lxskllr @MirrorAyako @tomte @startrek I agree. Both character's distinguishing traits were short term gimmicks that couldn't last very long. Kim's status of "the new recruit experiencing their first days on the job" got really old by the end of season one. And Kes' weird accelerated aging scheme was doomed to fail because it is not sustainable to keep the same person doing a character that is 20 in year one, 60 in year four, and 90 by the end of the show.

@thomholwerda@exquisite.social I would like to think that the midterms will make everything better... But the DNC has an unfortunate habit of not pressing hard enough followed by collapsing right before the finish line. Nothing is going to change unless the DNC gets new leadership dedicated to (at a bare minimum) addressing ALL of the bat shit crazy parts of our society. The GOP is right about one thing: The DNC is soft on crime. They let Trump steal the election in 2024 with barely a word and now they continually refuse to prosecute him even though he's actively committing treason and international war crimes.

@lxskllr @ColesStreetPothole @MirrorAyako @tomte @startrek From what I've heard, it works like any other job... Some actors (e.g. Robert Picardo) were really into the gig to the point to where they were co-writing their characters with the writing team. And then there were the other actors (e.g. Garrett Wang) that showed up, performed their part, and that's the extent of their involvement.

@skaphle @nileane @verge I was mainly using "anti-fascist" to describe the series because much of the series preaches a "Voldemort needs to be defeated because he openly supports eugenics" concept. The statement does not reflect how well the series follows said concept. There is obviously a ton of nuance here that would take more than a single social media post to go over. Overall, I think Harry Potter worked best during the early "fun adventure mystery" era where the details were handled on a "fast and loose" basis and things were not taken too seriously. The switch to more of a hard core "dark and serious drama" format towards the end of the series ruined it for me.

@nileane @verge So an openly fascist author is using the profits from their 3 decade old anti-fascist book series to fund more fascism in the real world? Wow. She probably should have used her money on a good therapist instead. Also... I probably would not bother pirating this. The original "Philosopher's Stone" movie was only good because Chris Columbus and the cast made it work. Joanne's recent works are rather shitty and only seem to get worse (see: Metacritic reviews of the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise). She's probably rebooting Harry Potter since all of her recent writing projects have been shit. In short, I don't need to ruin my good experiences with the original "Philosopher's Stone" with this shitty remake. I already feel terrible about the original "Philosopher's Stone" because it is a great adventure movie that got ruined several decades later by an increasingly erratic, unstable, and dangerous author. 😬
