for (2), (do this, return that) is pretty much the behaviour here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma_operator
it's kind of important for C reasons since it acts as a sequence point (meaning the left-hand side is guaranteed to be fully evaluated before the right-hand side)

@simonomi yes very good. I wrote my own hexdump tool for similar reasons (and some other bits and bobs I wanted), and would encourage regular hexdump users to write their own too and tune it to their preferences
the main other feature I added is an -rto specify a byte range, and I use something like hexd -r 0-0x40 *.foo way too often to compare headers of a bunch of files quickly (e.g.)
