I was thinking about employee burnout, and I might have made a realization... how much damage is caused by loss of curiousity (by lack of time and/or motivation)?

@lilithsaintcrow@raggedfeathers.com @samiamsam@mastodon.social I think he's not taking corruption and nepotism into enough account. He keeps arguing that it would make no sense, but we live in times when things that make no sense happen on the regular.

So this is _not_ a character modeling tutorial. Holy crap that must of taken a lot of effort.

@augieray I strongly believe, as with the religious establishment in the New Testament, that a significant portion of life is a hypocrisy test.
It explains basically everything about Donald Trump... a born rich, wise-as-a-stump person who prides himself on all seven deadly sins.

@AmyZenunim This (the screenshot) is exactly the opposite advice that I give for gamedev. I used to get a lot of "what books/course should I read/do before trying to make a game" (or similar).
My response is to stop putting rites of passage in front of yourself. It's going to be hard either way. If you do what you want now, then you'll at least care. Expect failure and ask for advice when you have tangible problems for your specific goals. A book's a reason to give up.

@morenonatural@todon.nl @chexum@hachyderm.io @saddestrobots@jorts.horse I usually end up writing a python script or an executable and just running those on the command line.
One time I was asked to parse JSON in a bash script. They recommended that I used sed. I normally do as asked, but that time I just wrote a Python script because all the build servers had it. They accepted it, though. They apparently never thought of it.

@mitsuhiko Convince them to switch to a license that drops to MIT/etc. on abandonment? Okay you could do that. GPL would be dumb for Entity A.
Alternatively, Entity A could write their closed-source software for Linux. There, Entity A could go away, but Entity B could rely upon _the platform_ always providing GPL guarantees. GPL makes sense for _Linux_
Entity A can be long gone, but Entity B can still beat Linux into a configuration such that Entity A's software works as it did "forever" (2/3)

@mitsuhiko A permissive license allows an entity to become defacto standard, and then rug-pull. Forks are possible from that point, but it's flimsy.
Conversely, if downstream protection doesn't apply, then GPL doesn't make as much sense.
There was one permissive library that I saw (Apache IIRC???) whose documentation was mostly examples, and the examples were GPL. 😅 What was the goal!? (Likely a goof.)
Ideally, all creations would belong to everyone in society, but we're not at a utopia yet.

@mitsuhiko Weakening _the platform_ by reducing its copyright duration wouldn't help. In fact, it'd make it easier for someone to poison pill it by reducing the attack duration to ex: 2 years, at which point people wake up and realize they are reliant upon proprietary _parts_ of a platform, which they need to somehow unwind.
Moving away from "platform" and GPL makes less and less sense. It's nonsense for Entity A's goals. (3/3)

@mitsuhiko Of course all of this assumes "capitalism". If we lived in a utopia, then everything would be public domain and art could survive for hundreds of years, studied in future generations like Shakespeare.
We wouldn't need to reconcile people who want closed-source with a society that wants ideas to be preserved forever.
