@dbattistella@mstdn.ca "Don't mention the children" by Michael Rosen. Don't mention the children. Don't name the dead children. The people must not know the names of the dead children. The names of the children must be hidden. The children must be nameless. The children must leave this world having no names. No one must know the names of the dead children. No one must say the names of the dead children. No one must even think that the children have names. People must understand that it would be dangerous to know the names of the children. The people must be protected from knowing the names of the children. The names of the children could spread like wildfire. The people would not be safe if they knew the names of the children. I've used pkgbasify for the first time, and then immediately thereafter, I upgraded a FreeBSD 15 box to 15.1 with pkg. This is really dramatically faster than freebsd-update. I think I'm hooked on pkgbase now. #freebsd

Wedges are a new thing since I last used NetBSD, and clearly they're going to be involved, as I'm going to want/need GPT partitioning, since hardware nowadays tends to use UEFI. This talks about some of the commands used: https://wiki.netbsd.org/users/mlelstv/using-large-disks/ And some man pages: https://man.netbsd.org/dk.4 https://man.netbsd.org/dkctl.8 I'm leaning more towards *not* using a ramdisk which will never be released and instead trading some disk space to do the same thing. I haven't gotten to a proof of concept yet, but I'm hoping to get there this weekend if I can. #netbsd

I saw a terrible message from DigitalOcean yesterday. I was helping a co-worker learn to do SASL authentication with Postfix, using Dovecot to do the heavy lifting, (second co-worker this week! Breaking people free from Google!) and we got to the point where we were ready to have him send out a test email - a reply to an email I'd just sent him that exercised all the moving parts of his inbound path. But when he tried to send, he couldn't talk to my email server. I checked to make sure he wasn't being firewalled, but he didn't show up in my abuse listing. But then on poking around, it became clear he couldn't talk to ANY port 25 ANYWHERE. And I thought, "Oh, right, they've got that blocked. Le'ts find an article talking about how to unblock it." Not too uncommon. So I looked for their docs on unblocking 25. Turns out, there's no automated way - not even a support ticket type for the purpose. You have to open a general request. But man, they REALLY don't want you opening a general request! This is a masterpiece of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/why-you-may-not-want-to-run-your-own-mail-server Without meaning to, they've eloquently captured the essence of everything we're seeing with the destructive corporatization and centralization of online services. They say: "In many ways, mail server stacks represent a collision between the tools and values of the early internet — self-hosting open source software using well-defined standards and interoperable protocols — and the reality of the modern internet — a few centralized, trusted authorities." This, not to put too fine a point on it, is BAD FOR US. We need *more* selfhosting. I was a customer of theirs for a few years, but I stopped after they had some catastrophe that prevented me from accessing my server console for more than a week. Their support was underwater and I didn't get any movement until I decided to publically name and shame them with details of the incident. This kind of attitude should make anyone hesitant to sign up for services with DigitalOcean. #selfhosting #digitalocean

It won't be long now before people start walking the streets with robes and sticks telling random strangers, "you are not of the body".

Perhaps he can be tried for war crimes once he's out of office. It might set a good example for the US.

"Israel's parliament approved a bill on Wednesday to dissolve itself, potentially bringing forward by a few weeks the next national election, which surveys predict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will lose."

This book started so strong! It was going to be a post-catastrophe thriller, a modern Lucifer's Hammer. I'm on page 171, and the catastrophe that started on day one hasn't really inconvenienced anyone. There's no TV any more, no broadcasts, no power. The book is done in another 121 pages, and I'm hoping something exciting happens in that time. The setup is now more than complete. The stage is set. There's not a speck of dust on the stage, not a hair out of place. The characters are well-defined, and we're ready to see them thrown into crazy, unexpected situations they're not quite ready to face. SO ready. But on page 171, there's a doctor, and despite his being in a bunker with other folks, he insists on seeing them over Zoom calls. =record scratch noise= #books

My wife called CVS and couldn't get through the automated system.

So I called. I ignored the prompts. I said "raptor" a few times, "help" once, and I made a gurlging noise partway through before reverting to "raptor". Did the trick and I was talking to a person in less than a minute.

@paninid@mastodon.world We really needed Giordani Bruno in there. From Wikipedia, Bruno "was a Neopolitan philosopher, Dominican friar and priest, poet, alchemist, astronomer, cosmological theorist, and esotericist." And of course, "Bruno was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition" and they "found him guilty, and he was burned at the stake in Rome's Campo de' Fiori in 1600." Now, things have improved. They murder fewer people nowadays. But their reputation is well-earned. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giordano_Bruno

I wonder if RFK Jr. is secretly pushing beyond "paleo diet" towards "paleo life" where humans don't live past forty. Firing members of the US Preventive Services Task Force is a step in that direction.

So I looked, and this talks about it, and has some interesting data I hadn't seen previously: https://aws.plainenglish.io/why-even-google-is-rethinking-kubernetes-internally-a4c457252450 Of course, today, the LLM addiction is doing even more economic harm to companies, but this stuff is still worth knowing. #kubernetes #google

@lindsey@recurse.social @byorgey@mathstodon.xyz That was a wonderful message. There's an analogy I like. McDonald's is "inevitable" and "here to stay" but that doesn't mean I'm going to eat there. The analogy can go further: McDonald's makes stuff shaped like food, and the materials they use could have been real food if prepared with love and care, but instead it's slop and it will harm you if you eat it. McDonald's turns people who might have been chefs into food assembly-line workers. But man, they can crank out a lot of lines of slop. McDonald's takes their profits and uses them to support demonstrably evil people doing demonstrably evil things. And much like what we see in the bubble engines, McDonald's formulates their stuff to be addictive. They use salt, fat, and sugar where the tech fad du jour uses reinforcement loops. They're both wielding dopamine to capture us. I feel like we'll get through this. Teachers sending messages like that one are going to be an important part of it.

@catsalad@infosec.exchange I found that many rabbits on the road when I was a teen. It was at night, and I was driving with my girlfriend. We drove over one in the road, but cleanly over it, not touching it. I immediately stopped and checked it out, and it was a domestic rabbit, wIth a bunch more beside the road. I think we ended up with the same count. These guys were a little malnourished, which we think explains why they were dumped. Luckily some friends drove past not long after, and there were a bunch of teens chasing down rabbits and putting them in my trunk. We hope we got them all. We think we did. All of them ended up with homes - we kept one, whom we named Denise, to be a friend to our existing rabbit Gary. They ended up having little rabbits, and Denise was *not* a good mother. Don't know if the stress of her origin story was too much or what. A cherished part was a mom and her daughter who came in response to the newspaper ad. There were solidly medium rabbits by then, having had access to food and safety. The mom said, "Honey, don't you want a little rabbit?" I saw the opportunity slipping, so I pretended I didn't hear and slipped the rabbit into the little girl's arms. She said, "no, Mommy, I was *THIS* rabbit." The mother shot daggers from her eyes, but they took the rabbit home. And he was a healthy, nice little rabbit at that point, so I wasn't foisting off defective product. :P

I'm very unhappy with my shell too. It's actively bad in a variety of ways, often mixing pain and discomfort and disability.
