I like gardens.
I will hyperfocus.
I talk about my mental health.

Just in case it helps anyone, the Washington Trails Association trail map has an overlay option where you can see the air quality and wildfires along with the trails' location. It helps with choosing places to hike without exposure to unnecessary risk. It's sobering, but helpful. https://www.wta.org/go-outside/map #pnw #WAwx #hiking

Spokane fire, personal, possible pet loss
@Crumbee@beige.party has family in Spokane, in the area that's burning. Fortunately, as of now, they have evacuated safely with one of their pets. The other one wouldn't go. Cherished belongings were left home. I.. I don't have much words left. There was a time I used to do research tangential to planetary and climate science. There was much talking about risks and trends and twenty years in the future. And mitigation and things everyday people could do and .. and I don't think people listened. Eventually, I ran out of words and walked away (it was a bit more complicated than that, but you get the idea). Friends, the time is now. Things can be done. All the words are there, look for them. Strengthen your connections. Look out for each other.

The circled tag refers to the zucchini I just planted. I have not decided if it's wise or foolish. Either way, wish me luck.

Out of curiosity I let some of my carrots bloom. I had planted them too late last year, so there was not much carrot to start with. I'm glad I did this. The flowers are loved by so many insects. I've seen bees of many types, bee-flies, flies, wasps and tiny beetles. The flowers last a long time and give out a sweet fragrance, which is very appreciated by Little Kid. I love how gardening sometimes goes like that. You make a mistake, but then is not a mistake, it just turns into something else. #gardening#pollinators

I know, I know, there is a million pictures of this sign already, but I was feeling very touristy today.

Plus the letter P has a seagull.

I went to the spice store and got some favorite herbal tea, which I'm about to enjoy.

Fixing the area under the garage steps was our "Saturday afternoon project" (it's Sunday evening and we're at.. 50% of the project 😆).

@Crumbee@beige.party has put most of the effort. I'm doing painting and fretting about the kids stomping over the plants in the area we're fixing.

@Furthering@convo.casa oof. Fans are a particular type of white noise that I have a hard time canceling out. The one I was recalling had only a gentle breeze, so possibly it was also not at the highest setting. Hang in there 😑

@Furthering@convo.casa I feel for you ☹ Is there a chance that some brands of purifier are less noisy? I'm asking because ours is quite loud, I highly dislike the noise it makes and only turn it on in the higher setting when the alternative is worse (e.g. someone is ill in the house or there is a lot of smoke). Yet, we stayed once at an airbnb that had a super quiet one. I could barely hear it, yet it kept the air inside quite clean.

@afewbugs thanks for doing this. When I started using them, I did it for cost and environmental reasons. They are not issue-free, but they made things better overall for me. Unexpectedly, they lifted a mental burden: having heavier periods, I would never know how many pads to pack, or I would run out, or forget to pack spares at all. I never realized how much mental energy was going into all that planning. I also felt .. better.. in a way that I suspect might have had to do with reduced exposure to plastics. Not currently using them as I have a Mirena IUD (thus no periods) but I think it's good to know they are an alternative, with pros and cons.

@syntaxseed@phpc.social oh no, I'm sorry to hear it has got so deep even in the lower grades. I'm taking a quarter off from teaching 100-level college classes, and possibly won't return, because of a similar reason. It was heartbreaking / infuriating / plain annoying to see students loose their own voice and self, while at the same time having admin sending surveys about how were we implementing AI in the curriculum, and slowly seeing faculty move further and further towards that.

@afewbugs @miffyhelen in my experience, the first times can feel like things don't work -it's a learning curve after all. I agree that, if it doesn't work the first time, it's useful to change the way you hold it and fold it, and then try again. Everyone's geometries are different. Since they are silicone, the material can fold with just some pressure, and then quickly return to it's original shape once you release it.

Replying to
@Cetraria@neurodifferent.me yes, that's the main reason! It's infuriating. They cut the whole cable, leaving the tower out of service sometimes for weeks. It's a costly and difficult repair. They even do it with the low-voltage chargers, which are thinner and don't have that much copper to start with. They do it also with other important infrastructure, such as electrical system for the light rail (which also has to stop service due to copper theft). I read a blog where someone calculated how much money could you get from each charger cable cut and it was.. not that much. My conspiracy theory is that *someone* may be paying extra for copper from specific sources. But they hit everyday targets as well. There was a cafe in Ballard which got stolen the condensers from their walk-in cooler. It's a plague.

@Cetraria@neurodifferent.me sometimes I think I should ask if I can do an internship at your garden, so I can learn about all those cool plants you have! Aah... I grew a green bean I found at the library seed box and it was excellent. It produced so much. Unfortunately I don't recall the name right now. I saved seeds, but I wrote something uninformative like "really good green bean" 😅

Depression
A late entry for #JukeboxFridayNight with a #PersonalPlaylist. The first holidays I spent away from my family I was really sad. I had recently moved to the US for grad school and I could not travel home as I had upcoming field work. An old friend sent me by snail mail Beirut's album "The Flying Club Cub". My landlady gave me a tiny Christmas tree to put in my tiny apartment. My mom sent by international mail some gifts. I listened a lot to this album and those moments were the last happy things I remember before my depression set in. When I stopped smiling, it was the lyrics in the song what alerted me that something was wrong with me. "It's been a long time since I've seen your smile". And when things got very dark and I lost the ability to remember or think about music, this song stayed with me, like a lifeline to a different time, when I was a happy person. Beirut - Nantes https://youtu.be/PCkT4K-hppE
