Wrote a driver for osmo-trx to run on the PlutoSDR.
PlutoSDR is a relatively inexpensive Zynq (FPGA+ARM) and AD9361 SDR device.
It runs Linux and can run smaller applications directly on device.
I'm now using it to run a 2G/GSM base station setup. The transceiver runs directly on device, the rest of the network needs to be external.
Made possible through 3rd party timestamping FPGA gateware written by Phil Greenland.

Modern PC hardware is real RF voodoo these days:
DDR5 runs at 5+ GHz, PCIe 5.0 runs at 16 GHz (!!), networking/SFPs running at 26+ GHz, often using advanced modulation like PAM4.
All of those ultra high speed links are doing some form of equalization/link training and their hardware is very often capable of measuring/reporting eye diagrams.

Let's play a game:
Post the oldest image of your "battle station" / computer setup that you have.
Ideally, post some specs of the system if you can remember.
I'll start:
- photo from 2003
- Pentium II, 350MHz
- 3DFX Voodoo Banshee
- 1024x768 17" Eizo CRT
- Iomega Zip drive, 100MB via Parallel port (click!)
- SCSI Scanner hidden away in the background
I think the Mac was a Power Macintosh 6300, but I'm not 100% sure.
What are yours? :) #retrocomputing

My name is Sarah (and the other person in the thread is also Sarah, which is why this is funny :P)
So I mean the firmware I linked up in the first post. On the GitHub releases page there's a download link!

look on over at https://github.com/amboar/culvert the iLPC2AHB mechanism is probably what you'd want to poke at.

@jasmin die überlappung mit den anderen beiden shots ist ein bisschen faule Ausrede -- du kannst die auch problemlos rauszögern, hast dann nur bis dahin weniger Schutz.

@agowa338@chaos.social serial infrared is just an old thing from the 90s related to IrDA (that thing Nokia phones could do to share files, remember?)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IrDA#IrPHY
It's a regular UART, but with some special pulse shaping to make the duty cycle of the TX way shorter, so it can be transmitted at high power over an IR LED.
it's a feature many UART peripherals just support because they're just copy&pasted/bought as IP blocks from some vendor.
not relevant to BMCs at all.

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems @arj@social.tchncs.de @ConstellationUnion@infosec.exchange @agowa338@chaos.social having said that: those AST2400 also have a mechanism called "Debug UART", which is a crazy hardware trick inside the ASIC: if you send a magic password over the UART, the peripheral itself will respond and switch over to some hardcoded (probably 8051) that offers a tiny shell with arbitrary memory read/write primitives for the ARM core.
This always works without any code being loaded or config set.
so maybe try to find that UART?

Weeeelll, that's a bit too much panic!
Yes, the machines might not boot anymore, but the data is still there.
It can still be read on a normal Linux Live-ISO just fine.

@themaritimegirl Depends on the schematic, so yeah, have some folks look over it.
I'd probably swap it out for a 330nF tantalum, which is hopefully fine, but... yeah, worth a closer look for sure.

@jeffcodes @gsuberland @azonenberg @jik @zackwhittaker You're absolutely right and will get no argument from me there. I have always supported people encrypting their drives and will give support to people trying to do that.
Still, VeraCrypt is just a very fragile piece of kit and users need to know that and be able to either fix it themselves or know someone who can do it.
Telling just random people on the streets to install it will indeed just block access to their data -- even without MS.

@jeffcodes @gsuberland @azonenberg @jik @zackwhittaker I'm very sorry, but users that aren't capable of getting help with recovering such data from someone that can handle a Linux Live ISO shouldn't be using VeraCrypt to begin with.
It's extremely likely to just cause your system to stop booting (and that has happened to me 5+ times in the years I was using it) -- it's just a regular occurance and you'll need to deal with these things as a user.
