Of the 9 capacitors I replaced, the larger ones tested okay, while the smaller ones ranged from weak to bad, so this was a good exercise. These were crowded around a large heatsink notorious for getting very hot in these decks, so replacement of them is recommended even if the deck seems to be working fine still.

@MakerTube@mastodon.social I don't seem to be able to subscribe via PayPal. If I choose my native currency, the only payment option is Apple Pay or credit card. If I choose EUR, the PayPal button comes up, but clicking it causes the PayPal window to open and then immediately close. I can use my credit card if needed, but would rather use PayPal if possible.

I tried Irn-Bru for the first time. I didn't know you could get it here, but they sell it right in the grocery store.

I was half expecting it to taste like Moxie just because of the color, but it's unique, and it's good. Very sweet, but mild flavor.

Nouvelle vidéo!

https://makertube.net/w/9QbEFKFFmbZjdLsaKyZBgc

https://youtu.be/ruOcekZh3Yg

I tried something new for this video - I shot it using the Sony DVCAM camcorder, but by feeding video from it into the Digital8 camcorder via S-Video to tape it. While there will be a small amount of quality loss, the imager on the DVCAM is so much better than on the Digital8 that I think it's still an improvement in video quality over using the Digital8 camcorder directly. And the S-Video connection is reliable enough for me to handhold the camera, which I can't do with a DV connection.

They're not the xenon strobe lights or the slowly pulsating incandescent lights from my childhood, but these dancing LED tower lights seen across the bay in Maine have a charm all their own.

John passed away this week after a battle with cancer. The show I produced with him ended a couple of years ago, but I will miss him. I think this promo is my favorite thing I ever made with him.

J.D. Power sent me another car ownership survey, which I'm always glad to complete. But I can't complete this one because it's asking me a question that it shouldn't have asked me and that I can't answer.

It initially asked "when will you be shopping for a new vehicle". I chose the longest answer, "Over 2 years", because obviously I'm hoping it will be much longer than that. But now it's asking me "why are you shopping for a new vehicle". And there's no "I'm not" answer. So it's dead in the water. I submitted feedback offering to take a "corrected" survey if they want me to.

wtf? Maybe this is why my phone suddenly filled itself back up after I had removed several GB of stuff, even though I hadn't recorded any video?

I wish I could uninstall Chrome now that I know this. I've been successfully using Waterfox for a while now.

Not that any of you knew my landlady, but her funeral is today, and I'm going to be livestreaming it on the TV station's YouTube at 1:00 ET using a couple of robotic cameras. It's going to be a very packed church.

(2/2) Further to this, the reason the CHSJ ID stays up for so long is because CBC is running their own ID in Fredericton at the same time, and CHSJ master control needs to wait until that is finished before they cut to the feed. The cuts were manually performed by a human, and I've been told that it was sometimes sloppy - viewers would see the CHSJ ID, and then it would cut to the tail end of the CBC ID before the CBC program started. Finally, the theme song for the CBC News for New Brunswick at this time was "Speedway", a 1977 song by French band Space Art: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9gOY773vXY

Ah yes, I forgot about this issue. This is separate from the Dolby buzz issue, which seems to have been fixed. I observed this happen once or twice last year before the other issues started. It's doing it with every cold power-on now.

I've read that these are sensitive to weak capacitors in the power supply section, so I will replace the rest of them when I replace the belts, and hopefully that will solve whatever this is.

Does anybody have a Texas Instruments TI-1025 calculator missing a box? I just found the one for the one I had that bit the dust more than a decade ago.

I think I can unfold it flat and ship it in a bubble envelope sandwiched in cardboard.

Welp, I was suddenly and without explanation refunded for the Sharp Organizer Modem I bought on eBay. And the others for sale cost more than I should spend for such a thing, so I guess I'll be holding off. Maybe someday.

Huh, I have never run into this problem ever. This is the first 0.33 uF electrolytic capacitor I've ever run across in something. You literally can't buy them on DigiKey, at least through-hole ones. Do I leave it? Replace it with a 0.47? Replace it with a ceramic equivalent? I guess I'll leave it for now and get input from the folks on Tapeheads.

I'm declaring humidifier season officially over.

I found new humidifier juice this season that is supposed to be better than the cheaper juice in the green bottle, and I think it did a better job - this wick isn't looking quite as gross as last year's.

@lint @foone The copies on the Internet Archive are useless because digitization breaks the data. There is data hidden in the vertical blanking interval that is only preserved in a purely analog copy. If I send you a tape, it will work. (Edit: I misread what you wrote. If Foone got one of the digitized copies to work, this is news to me, because it should be impossible.) You should watch my video about the system. It is the most complete source of information about it, and corrects some myths and incorrect info made by other people :) https://makertube.net/w/amyoD7x9iwUBBJWyFjphcz
