Working on migrating everything off of digitalocean. The new kap site (same as the old one) is not on Hetzner, and in Europe. The old one was in a local datacentre in Singapore, which may have made it a bit slow for people elsewhere. Also, the site can now be accessed at https://www.kap-lang.org/ The big migration will be the matrix server. I'm a bit worried about that one. Then I'll be able to close my account on digitalocean and tell them what I think about them.

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange when I come back to Sweden it always feels weird. It's because nothing has really changed over there, but you have. You feel like an alien, things around you are strange yet not unfamiliar. It's weird. For me, it's based enough that if I ever go back to Europe, I'd probably stay in a different country nearby.

As much as I am a fan of the idea of Flatpak, and how I believe it's the only practical way for regular users to operate a Linux system, this is not a good UI experience. Which Thunderbird am I supposed to install? Clicking on them, the two first are from "Thunderbird Project", while the third (as well as Betterbird) are from "MZLA Technologies, part of the Mozilla foundation". I think the latter is the right one to install, but how would a user not deep into this stuff know what to choose?

@brianvastag@mas.to @federicomena@mstdn.mx same. I also have a Kia Niro (2023 I think) and the other than the obvious things that isn't different from a petrol car (wiper fluid, tyre changes, aircon filter etc) there really isn't anything that needs servicing. And like you said, you don't use the brakes much, so brake pads don't need replacement very often. I also find it amusing to open the bonnet and note that the inside is clean. No oil, no half-burned dirt, etc. I don't see myself ever driving a petrol car again.

Last week I came back from vacation, and the cats were unusually clingy. I guess they were worried we'd leave again. So, one cat decided that the best way to show affection was to walk back and forth in front of my feet. Well, I tripped, and instead of stepping on the cat (unthinkable) I fell to the ground, with my aging knee absorbing all 80+ kg of weight. Well, it kept hurting and today I got an x-ray. It's fractured. Great. That means even longer until I can get back to mountain biking.

So, here's a controversial topic, maybe?

I personally find conspiracy theorists, antivaxxers, science denialists etc to be actively dangerous to society. And we should do whatever we can to minimise their negative impact on the world.

I used to listen to a bunch of different skeptic podcasts, which was fun for a while. But eventually I came to realise that a lot of the people in the "skeptic community" all appear to be insufferable arses.

Could it be that because these people spend much of their time reading and responding to the stupidest people on earth, so now they exhibit something analogous to billionaire supremacy syndrome where they think they are experts in everything?

It's kinda sad, because if the goal is to educate and help people look at things critically, that kind of attitude kinda defeats the purpose.

@petrillic@hachyderm.io every time I think about this I'm reminded by this story posted by this guy who bought a used Mac computer. It was full of old writing and he immediately deleted everything on it because he didn't want to risk reading someone's private data tgar apparently the original owner forgot to delete. Later he learned the computer was Adams old computer that was supposedly used to write his books.

@freya @TheOneDoc @WPalant I have to admit it was a pretty amazing place to work. The combination of both friendly and smart people, where, if you needed some expertise, you could literally email one of the countless internal mailing lists, and have the designers of the thing you were wondering about answering. The best training session I ever had was a 1 week (or was it 2? I can't remember) session called "Solaris Internals for Employees". Most of my knowledge about operating system design comes from that, and even though I mostly work with Linux these days, the knowledge I gained there is still useful to me. Also, there was a lot of neat hardware to play with.

@zerkman@pouet.chapril.org @troed@swecyb.com my concern is bigger. My opinion wouldn't change even if they were absolutely capable of doing everything the fanboys claim they will be able to do. I have seen first hand just how quickly people's competence drops, and in particular how openly averse to learning even the basics they become. I've experienced it myself, and the only way to stop it was to completely eliminate these tools from my life. I'm sure there are plenty of people able to use these systems responsibly. But far too many people are not, which likely includes myself, and it's a time bomb.

@monotux @WPalant I mentioned this in another thread, but I think it's worth it to mention again: I read (much of the rambling) article, and when I said said something along the lines of: "how could anything like this not be sentience?", my answer would be: that sounds very much like something else you've commented on in the past: 'how could the creation of the world not be an act of god?' I think he's finally discovered what it means to have a religious vision.

@LunaDragofelis@void.lgbt @joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech they were down for quite a bit yesterday. It bit me as I was trying to push my changes so I could put the latest version of my project on the website. Not a huge deal. I think the discourse now was triggered by a controversial post which explained that they're moving their project to github instead to avoid these issues.

@jpm@aus.social @mike@social.chinwag.org we live practically at the equator, the the days are almost the same length thoughout the year. When the kids were small (4? 5?) We went to Sweden to visit family on summer. Sunrise is at 03:00, and the kids were wide awake playing at 4. We woke up and asked why they're not sleeping and the answer was that it was daytime. It's a fair answer. I do think we managed to get them back to sleep.

I implemented support for the graphics API in the web-based implementation.

Getting the html components laid out correctly was the thing that took 90% of the time. UI layout was a solved problem in the 90''s. Why is this still such a struggle?

Anyway, it kinda-sorta works now, so here's an example

Go ahead and follow the link and click on 'Send' to try it. Everything is client side. No tracking or anything like that.

Some of it from the 80's. A more valid argument could be regarding what people do with the AY chip in the Atari ST. It's the same chip as the Spectrum 128, but thanks to the faster CPU in the ST, you can do tricks by changing parameters while the waveform is playing to create new types of sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKkUnTxr8k0

@hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange depends on where you are. For me, it's nostalgia. It's the bag me and many others had as a school bag in the early 80's. I was actually surprised when I saw them in Singapore some 35 years later. It's a great rugged bag, but it's not a backpacking bag really. Fjällräven has other types of bag that may be more to your liking.
