mastodon 4.8.0-alpha.3+glitch
  • Open on infosec.exchange

Teaching and creating cyber-security for postgrad at Edith Cowan University. Love retro tech and have a real nostalgia for 80s/90s computing and telecommunications.

I'm a total sucker for retro tech, 90s movies, geeky & Macguyver projects, cryptography, cyber security, new and emerging technology.

Passion for helping postgrad and research students (have worked with many postgrad project students).

Twitter refugee, finally activating my dormant mastodon. Already enjoying the vibe here more!

DM and @ welcome - bring it on!

@shlee@aus.social @wiert@mastodon.social add your Australian Consumer Law keywords to indicate to their LLM that you intend to take it further. I suggest “misleading and deceptive conduct“, which can cover things that are factually correct but deceptive. And unconscionable, for when someone knowingly exploits people.

@masek@infosec.exchange you speak German? Why are you asking us?! 🤣 Google translate makes me feel like perhaps the casual term could be: Kabelaufbewahrenvielleichtnützlichseinkönnten

HOLY CRAP... a RAID (albeit a faux 'SnapRAID') just saved my files! AND it did it in minutes! I have NEVER had a RAID give me anything but grief. EVER I mean in 30 years of running RAIDs, I've never had anything but dead controllers and week long rebuilds that failed! I love you SnapRAID! #selfhosted #selfhosting #snapraid #homelab

@masek@infosec.exchange I think I’ve oversold myself. My Finnish is anchored in 1950s northern country, farm girl dialect. (Having learned from my 1950s, northern Finland farm girl mother, when I was a kid). But I will consult the cousins for an authentic translation.

Oh.. Telstra fault looks like core network issue! It seems a heap of prefixes (blocks of Telstra network addresses) just got updated through different routes at 3am (i.e. the Internet suddenly realised they can't reach parts of Telstra so there was a mad scramble to find alternate routes!) So probably NOT BGP (this time!), but definitely a big issue on some core routing/signalling infrastructure! #telstra #outage #australia #internethttps://stat.ripe.net/widget/bgp-update-activity#w.starttime=2026-07-06T00%3A00%3A00&w.resource=AS1221

I know for most people here, LLM is on the nose as is vibe coding.

But a few weekends of vibe coding has gotten me to a very fun place.

I have weekly meal prep and planning and shopping down to under 10 minutes comparing prices from multiple stores nutritionally balanced and varied recipes.

In about two months of testing, we’ve already saved a couple of hundred dollars.

We also have almost 0 food wasted.

All operated through a fun text UI which feels like an oldschool BBS

@masek@infosec.exchange I know this isn’t the question you asked. But, can you put Open Media Vault onto the NAS? I found the TerraMaster OS pretty, and “fine” for simple use. But switched to OMV to give me more flexibility.

@Daojoan@mastodon.social also banks: “we’re here for you. It’s a journey and we want to grow together”. Also banks later: “Oh, you mean you’re having tough times? Oh no, we didn’t mean were ‘there for you’ like that. Sorry cant help… P.S., your fees are going up (so we can better grow together).”

@sjjh@hachyderm.io oh no. Sorry. Clarity lacking. Keep stored kernels slightly hydrated. So drop of water & seal.. Leave in the cupboard for a couple of weeks… (Old dry kernels don’t puff much). That’s separate from the cooking with is “plenty of oil, flavacol and don’t heat as fast as you think..”. 😀

@ahltorp @davep @jtb @signalapp as a real world story. I work in cyber security. The team I work with is a very experienced security conscious team of devs (many with 20+ years experience). One got hit with a phish because of a perfectly timed email. The email was obviously a scam IF you weren’t expecting a parcel delivery. Unfortunately, my colleague was expecting a parcel delivery! The phishers managed to hit the right topic and context and a timing window that coincided with a highly anticipated, expected delivery, from that exact carrier at about the right time. Luckily he realised within minutes and was able to move quickly to change passwords and reset credentials. This wasn’t even spear phishing or any sort of targeted, social engineering supported attack. It was just luck and timing.

The 2001 advert for the 'new Nissan Pulsar' was marketing GOLD!

So revolutionary was this car, that the ONLY two call out features in the advert were:

  1. Sunglasses holder
  2. Takeaway food hooks.

I'm glad to be getting the finest legal advice! Maybe this is what I deserve?

(Disclaimer: I don't actually begrudge this lawyer, as long as they thoroughly verify the output and can vouch for it as a human. But.... it does make me wonder whether it's good value).

For what it’s worth: Stove top in an ordinary pot is just fine.Heat it from cold , on medium heat (don’t blast it)… let the starch cook before pop. Good kernels. Humidify you kernels (1/4 tsp water per cup of kernels shake to distribute and seal tight) FlavacolBeta carotene for colour. Refined coconut oil for popping. #popcorn #movies

Ok. My brain just broke. We just watched an old DVD of the Never Ending Story and realised the “song” (the MAIN theme by Limahl) was not in our DVD version!?! Apparently it was an addition! This is all shades of wrong!!. The movie needs that song!!! No song it’s almost worse than Artax not making out!
