@Catfish_Man I agree the interview structure isn't the right one, but there's something to be said for picking the right data structure in the first place, so that you don't have to wait for the natural pushback later. 80% of the time it won't matter, and 5% of the time it might make things worse, but I think there's still a good 15% or so where having better defaults than "accidentally quadratic" is worth being part of the initial implementation.

@maccatalan @kalleboo I mean I wrote a real program in it. But also it was PowerPC-only, and if I were doing it today I would base it on Embedded Swift. (Which might even Just Work, if you can get the proper object file tools?) I think the Rust folks may have a 68k target though…

@thephd@pony.social For the record, macOS thread-locals were notoriously slow back when I worked at Apple, because they’re hidden behind function calls in order to not make the special thread-local data register part of the ABI. I don’t know if that’s still the case, but it may be interesting for you (or someone else) to re-run on Linux. Or it may not be, I can’t imagine it’s ever going to be cheaper than the static case anyway.

@ireneista@adhd.irenes.space [untagging Ada because I don’t know her] I hate this all too, but I don’t think “get out of the well-paying field because some people enjoy it” is a very good argument. Or even “because some people take pride in their work and you should too”. The field is well-paid. The fact that many of us enjoy the work and would choose it even for less pay is barely relevant.

@slava@mathstodon.xyz @zwarich@hachyderm.io @joe@f.duriansoftware.com I've been bitten too many times by "declarations produce unit" to believe everything is naturally an expression. I can generally live with "you can force everything to be an expression" though. (The big misstep was "loops do an implicit collect" but I think everyone's in agreement about that these days.)

@Catfish_Man “async but on the main actor” is definitely an interesting one for me. I guess as long as you’re not CPU-bound you must have an await somewhere in the task that means you’re yielding for UI stuff to run.

Context: Swift has not officially had a way to expose plain old functions to C until now. Why? Because it had Objective-C interoperability first, and so deciding whether C functions should support everything ObjC does or not was…complicated. You can read about it here: https://github.com/swiftlang/swift-evolution/blob/main/proposals/0495-cdecl.md
