Couldn't resist letting myself get nerd-sniped back into #emacs. I never fully left anyway.
This time around I'm determined NOT to try to fit my entire computing life into it and (mostly) just use it as an editor.
Anyway, nice to see how far it's come. So many things are usable out of the box now. My `init.el` is less than 70 lines (cosmetics and bindings, some packages), but thanks to project.el, eglot, and completion-preview, you have an IMO pretty decent coding experience right away.
Mood.
So much of modern tech is feudalism dressed up as convenience.
Content? Rent it. And risk losing it all if it gets pulled or your account gets locked.
Devices? Locked down. Do you really own them if you can’t install software without jailbreaking?
Electronics? Increasingly unaffordable. I guess they just expect us to rent all compute too eventually.
Yes, FOSS is not always as convenient. But we have a better chance fixing that than we have making companies ethical.
Is "radicalized by billionaires' dumb hot takes" a recognized category now? It definitely should be.
Some days, I feel like I'm 3 posts away from looking for an online course on artisanal guillotine making.
Our #dog loves traveling. He’s been on many road trips with us. Yesterday we re-arranged the bedroom a bit and his bed moved by about 2.5 meters. He looked at us like we moved him to another country. It took quite a bit of convincing until he finally believed us that it’s still the same bed. 🐕
My current theory is that feeling pain/annoyance is an integral part of the software engineering process.
Hear me out: when your architecture is starting to fail you, the cost of change goes up. That's painful for developers, who will hopefully be given the time to address this (or sneak these changes in alongside other work). Clankers don't care. Whether it's a couple of lines in a few files or a massive change across the entire codebase, it's all the same to them: tokens in, tokens out.
Modern software is so user-hostile: Forced to make an account because this crap doesn't work without one, though only $DEITY knows why. Then they immediately send you some spammy email about "onboarding" you onto their product.
None of this has my interests in mind. It's all just serving some internal metrics, not me.
Reminds me of @andrewrk@mastodon.social's recent talk:
The amount and diversity of content in #WhereWindsMeet still boggles my mind. Crazy that it’s f2p but they are raking in money through the entirely optional gacha system anyway.
They did lose me for a bit with the Hexi region, but they won me back with Imperial Palace and Hidden Mountain.
Time to grind to the new level cap (100).
Standalone ActivityPub bots in TypeScript

Why do so many CLI tools feel like they can just go and add their shit to my shell startup files?
I have a pretty specific way of managing my config. I do not want a tool to randomly vomit something into wherever it thinks is the right place.

Oh boy, movie producers sure love the word “firewall” even though they have no idea what it means.

From 捕风追影 (The Shadow’s Edge)
After a bizarre series of not one, not two, but three flight reschedulings, a sleepless night because of a stomach bug and the prospect of spending 22h in Sharjah, my Georgia and Armenia trip is clearly not meant to be.
Going back to Samui now, where my plan is to do absolutely nothing for the next week. Of course I also forgot stuff in the taxi to the airport and had to run back out to meet the driver, then went through the wrong security gate because of sleep deprivation. 🤦♂️
Finished Odd Taxi. Great show, really enjoyed it. Good that it wrapped up after one season with 13 episodes, sometimes a story is just finished.

Just watched this movie in the cinema:

I’m a sucker for dog movies anyway, but this one was pretty good. It’s about the life of a Thai street dog, but also the stories of his various caregivers: an aging Japanese car engineer, an illegal Burmese worker, and a young Thai couple.
Not sure how easy this will be to watch outside #thailand but if you get a chance, give it a watch.
@olly@indieweb.social @neatnik@social.lol My wording was bad. I deleted the post. No harshness intended.
Remember the subprime mortgage crisis? At least it was caused by human greed. We won’t even get a fun movie afterwards, who wants to see “The Bot of Wall Street”?
