@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca Oh, it's just unfortunate how the infrastructure has aged, and it just keeps breaking. So sad that exports of energy are affected. So unreliable. Why does electricity export keep failing during superbowl Sunday? And the pipelines are always under repair when the Straights of Heisenburg are closed? Clearly, we are incompetent managers. Why not sue us? Oh, you can't because the ability to the the state is part of CUSMA.

Replying to
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca no. No. Taxing our exports is silly. Unfortunately, the systems (pipelines, transmission grids, bridges) involved are old and due to lack of investment, appartently tend to break randomly, requiring multiple weeks of repairs.

@buherator @badkeys No, they thought they were generating an ECDSA key, for which a 256 or 384 bit would be strong. But, they didn't provide the right arguments, and wound up with RSA. I think the OP posted the private key that they were able to crack trivially.

#ottawa report on Automated Speed Enforcement cameras via Councillor Sean Devine. From https://www.seandevine.ca/april_28_2026_newsletter: "At the safety level, the statistics could not have been more clear. In school zones alone, ASE was a proven tool for reducing speeds. The original ASE pilot of 8 cameras in school zones showed that speed-limit compliance went from an abysmally low 16% to a remarkably high 87% in only 4 years. And when it came to high-end speeding, i.e. speeding at more than 15 km/hr above the posted limit, it had declined from 14% to a statistically negligible 0.3% in that same span.

In other words, the cameras worked. No reasonable person can deny this fact.

And what has happened since the removal of those cameras in November 2025? The result is as horrifying as it is depressing, because it was altogether predictable.

Ever since the cameras were removed in November 2025, City staff have been monitoring speeds at the 8 locations where ASE cameras had first been installed in the original pilot project – all of them in school zones. While there will be another analysis once the City has implemented the new oversized signs that have been mandated by the Ford government, the initial post-removal speed data shows significant regression in driver behaviour."

I have been doing #email for just under 40 years now. FidoNet, UUCP ( lsuc!nrcaer!fts1!Latour!MCR ), ocunix.on.ca, and sandelman.*ca since. I wish the #crtc would take the do not call list seriously, and I wish the #rcmp would spend some real effort on the fraudsters. I think it is much like the Broken Window Theory: "People in the community help with crime prevention. Newman proposed that people care for and protect spaces that they feel invested in, arguing that an area is eventually safer if the people feel a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the area. Broken windows and vandalism are still prevalent because communities simply do not care about the damage.". I would take a job investigating/repairing broken internet windows.

I have now managed to move my desktop #devuanlinux system away from chrome to #librewolf. Wasn't that hard, just a lot of context. And passwords in chrome which my two other password managers had not been updated with. (Two. Because the old one was homebrew shell scripts. New on is pass(1))
It helped that I had many Firefox profiles for banking, media, and development. All those had been moved to #librewolf a few months ago. The kicker was that last two chrome updates seemed eat huge amounts of ram. Htop claims they were 1.3TB in size, which is nonsense, and counts shared libraries, etc.
What I would like is a tool/service that lets me send URLs from my phone to my desktop browser. "Send to devices" equivalent.

Three times we rescue a tiny bat from our pool. First time, box to dry out in, water to drink, arrange for a vertical so #manbat can take off. He took off, got lost in the garden. Try again with box. He seems to have dried off and left. Nope: found him in the pool twenty minutes ago. Rescue, back to box... I go in pool to cool down: what this? the bat. Rescue third, time back in the box. Looks like he can climb out of the box on his own now. Bats in our backyard are common, swooping from tree to tree, searching for #bugs to eat. EAT THOSE BUGS. Never had to rescue one like that.

Does my #mastodon instance/account keep track of number of people who follow me (that I don't follow back) who then have their accounts killed/removed? 90% of people following me in the past few months have been real, interesting people who I definitely wanted to follow back. But, in the past few weeks it's been 90% empty accounts, which I assume are phisphing.

@mattblaze I was going to ask how radar got "out" of the metal box, but you mention that the antennae was removed. I wonder though: wasn't the antennae the weakest point, from a surviving nuclear blast point of view? At the time, I guess small guided missiles were not a thing; as it seems like a dingy 2km off the coast with a sidewinder (or a Ukranian with a drone...) would be the simplest way to take out the radar.

@AskPippa eSIM. I like airolo. I maintain their Global SIM, so my second number stays the same: (a) Canadian providers suck at doing prices. (b) Receiving text and calls is usually free. (c) CDN banks never got the NIST message about how insecure SMS is, and go whole hog on it. Annoyance is group SMS breaks. Do not reply to texts from the bank, or you pay the $14 to roam that day. If airolo would let me port my number to them, it would be bye bye Telus. I do appreciate Telus have V6.
