The EU is combating planned obsolescence with new Right to Repair laws:

- No repair refusal based on prior 3rd party servicing;
- Repairing under guarantee adds 12 months to your warranty;
- Repair forms ensure 30-day price transparency;
- EU repair platform arrives in 2028.

Also covers smartphones, displays, servers, storage.

A victory for sustainability and consumer autonomy!

Opt-out is not consent, it is a corporate dark pattern designed to harvest data. True consent is an explicit YES not the absence of a NO. AI developers must stop exploiting users and start respecting autonomy by default. #AI #privacy #FOSS #freesoftware #opensource #software #communication #ethics

The UK released a pamphlet claiming that recording someone in a public space without their permission could lead to arrest, but in the UK you do not need a permit to film or photograph in public places. The page is part of a government initiative for preventing violent behaviors by immigrants. Knowing the law is the only way to verify the accuracy of official guidance. Be alert; be skeptical. Ireland started a Pause Before You Post Awareness Campaign: sharing photos and videos of children online can lead to unintended oversharing of personal data, which, in the wrong hands, can have serious consequences. Wise initiative!

Codex CLI, the free local AI-agent developed by OpenAI, quietly ruined your SSD!
Rui Fan (Apache Software Foundation) discovered that the software has been writing up to 640 terabytes of logs per year, which is way more than a typical SSD lifetime endurance. This may cause user account issues, data loss and hardware damage.

https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/28224

Tip: make periodic backups of your files! 💾

Notepad++'s update servers have been compromised by Chinese hackers and all users had been exposed to malware. The developer estimated the overall compromise period spanned from June through December 2, 2025. Users should update to version 8.9.1 (or superior) immediately. EasyOptOuts and 404 Media discovered that Apple's Hide My Email, a popular iCloud feature that allows users to receive emails without revealing their personal email address, has a vulnerability which makes the real email address publicly discoverable.
The vulnerability has been reported a year ago and is still present.💔

𝗜'𝗺 𝗮 𝗙𝗢𝗦𝗦 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗜-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲?

No, LLMs learn from codebases of doubt reputation and often reproduce flawed or private code, which you don't want in your codebase. The AI can also propose parts of proprietary algorithms as code snippets. Projects which include a significant quantity of AI-generated code are more likely to be considered non-free by the FOSS community. Do not let AI touch your code!

Thanks to AI, hackers quickly discovered new vulnerabilities such as CopyFail, DirtyFrag, and Fragnesia. They use LLMs to analyse Linux, finding and exploiting the security flaws faster than ever. The expertise required to hack is at an all-time low.

The Fedora Project decided to explain which precautions are being put in place to protect your system:

Nekogram, fork of the Open Source messaging app Telegram used by journalists and privacy activists, had just been discovered to include spyware. The malicious code sent all user's private phone numbers to the developer, a Chinese man nicknamed NekoWorkshop (alias tehcneko). The devteam publicly admitted the presence of the spyware code, then started reacting violently against the userbase.

@TrimTab@mastodon.social modern Linux repositories use digital signatures (like OpenPGP), so they are indeed safer to use. I use both Debian and Fedora, and I can testimony the superior quality of the updates offered, in terms of timing and reliability. Indeed, trying new software is much easier this way! 🙂

@agowa338@chaos.social ty, but I've already had formation. Also, I could not verify who you claim to be, sorry pal.😅 In my personal website, if a project is linked, I've done volunteer work and the intent is to attract peers. I'm mainly a webmaster and contribs as www, docs, i18n, testing, design, counselling etc. often can't figure in repos commits.🙂 Here I've only restated official advice in easier forms. If you're sure (?) of knowing better, following it is optional.👋

@agowa338@chaos.social no, consider yourself - and your LAN - as compromised. Follow the developer's advice and update to the latest version, taking care to verify the OpenPGP signature of the downloaded files. While a preliminary analysis revealed users in Vietnam, Philippines, El Salvador, and Australia as the primary targets, the developer (correctly) advised all users to upgrade. If you've been (even potentially) exposed from June to December 2025, consider your system as infected by a professional trojan horse named "Cobalt Strike". It is able to covertly gain and maintain long-term control of the infected machines. A thorough security check of all exposed machines is recommended.

Replying to
@agowa338@chaos.social no, updating the client is required to prevent further infection. It does not retroactively remove the malware, if still present, but you must do it before checking your network for the infection or starting using Notepad++ again. Updating is necessary and recommended. Consider yourself a target. Reinstalling your systems is not required as the trojan can be removed by up-to-date antivirus solutions like Kaspersky, after having updated Notepad++ to the latest version as explained in: https://ieji.de/@LorenzoAncora/116154092794477293

@rocky1138@dosgame.club it depends on if the user can and wants to change OS. A single security issue on a replaceable application isn't a sufficient incentive. 😅

@agowa338@chaos.social no, all users are valuable targets, "Cobal Strike" can be used to create a botnet and the attackers always have interest in controlling as many computers as possible, which can then be used at a later time as proxies or VPNs to perform network attacks or distribute harmful or illegal content. Please take the threat seriously and follow the aforementioned advice: https://ieji.de/@LorenzoAncora/116154092794477293

Replying to
@agowa338@chaos.social no, it is the same vulnerability: the security analysis only sampled a few key points in time, giving a partial, incomplete view of what the attackers did and of who they targeted. In other words, the command-and-control server can receive and execute different remote commands without leaving any trace. The developer stated who were the primary targets, but he doesn't have access to in-depth information. This is the reason he (and I) also advised all users to update.🙂 Please follow the advice in: https://ieji.de/@LorenzoAncora/116154092794477293

@Bredroll@mas.to it depends on what level of security is needed in your environment. Telegram (the upstream app) uses advanced encryption and is reasonably private, fine for civilian use. If you need higher standards, you may want to use a paid alternative or self-host via XMPP, Matrix and the like.🙂

@ArtGeek@mastodon.social hi, the lack of privacy in the USA is well known worldwide and I think is often abused to create scandals or track the population with "smart" cameras. Here in Italy (sovereign nation within the European Union), occasional recording in public does not require consent, but persistent recording of people who object is forbidden; businesses can also ban recording to protect their employees. The strict limit is the EU GDPR: sharing images requires explicit consent or blurring the faces.

@ArtGeek@mastodon.social the European Union is not a place.😅 I wasn't referring to the geographical location, but to the legal jurisdiction: several European countries (United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Serbia and Albania) are not members of the European Union and do not obey the GDPR and other common privacy laws. Questioning to a local and asking for permission are always smart moves, just be careful to what you do with people's pictures, as publishing faces online requires special care.

Replying to
@jonpsp@mstdn.social the UK GDPR is distinct from the EU GDPR. The UK government is actively seeking to diverge from EU rules on legitimate interests and scientific research to make data usage easier for AI and tech firms. Since it's enforced by the UK's ICO rather than EU authorities, the UK can interpret and weaken these protections unilaterally. So, in the UK, companies and data trackers (including those in your phone) might be able to feed your pictures/recordings into privacy-invasive tools. @ArtGeek@mastodon.social
