OOOooo this one get extra points for the unique article design:
what happened to the #frontend
"Two decades, forty-four meters of build tools, and one very confused later, here's the whole story. Spare twenty minutes; I'll get you up to speed...In 2008 you saved a file called index.html, dragged it onto an FTP client, and watched a little progress bar crawl to the right. When it finished, your website existed..."

Your Grid Lanes will likely fail #WCAG 2.4.3 by @matuzo@front-end.social
"There is awareness of this problem...the outcome was two new properties in #CSS reading-flow and reading-order. I won't go into detail now, you can read about them on the Chrome blog or MDN, but essentially, the reading-flow property can be used to ensure the reading and tabbing order reflects the visual order when the visual and DOM order don't match."
"The dropdown field has been the bane of many a designer and developer...we’ve never been able to really style the dropdown itself. Many people turn to third party #JS replacement solutions, like the Select2 library. Unfortunately, these are not very #accessible and introduce a ton of issues and bugs, as well as yet another heavy JS library dependency..."
I haven’t left my desk in two weeks. My neck is demanding a call to 9-1-1.
Why am I still seeing so many job ads for #Elementor sites?? #Gutenberg is bad enough, but at least it's native to #WordPress now and does the same thing.
Better yet though, stop using all of these heavy buggy drag-n-drop solutions that output junk code.
#ACF Flexible Layouts a good middle ground. Flexible enough to allow the client customization w/o breaking design guidelines, no junk code output or buggy admin, a bit of customization makes it even easier to use.
I've been a big fan of @Wilto@front-end.social 's for forever, even though he gave us sizes lol
The end of responsive images
This is a gorgeous, gorgeous longish essay from @tg@indieweb.social on the tech that's constantly asking for our attention. Love the beautifully subtle animations and the CSS handdrawn casio and apple watches, .
THE LAST QUIET THING:
Fantastic post about the costs of "speeding up" dev with #AI
"...a lot of this AI-generated code? Nobody fully understands it. The person who "wrote" it didn't really write it. They prompted it, skimmed it, maybe ran it once. When it breaks in production at 2am, the person on-call didn't write it and the person who prompted it can't explain it...Your bottleneck is the org chart, and no amount of Copilot is going to refactor that."

I've spent the entire day just trying to get a copy of a WP site working from one server to another. Now I remember why I never take on maintenance clients.
Thank you everyone for all the boosts for my last post. It warms my heart how kind the community is here ❤️❤️

More Reasons to Delete Your #Javascript Series: Using for #Accessible Accordions
"Now it’s time to pay attention to accordions – which are notoriously tricky to make accessible, requiring lots of JS code and switching of aria attributes. HTML solves this with the element. I’ve been aware of it for years, but I vaguely remember that when it first came out it was a PIA to style and animate..."
Ya'll who #freelance, do you charge for meetings? I can't decide whether to or not. (I'm talking about project discussing meetings, not the first intro meeting).
"Therefore, as a web #developer, it is your responsibility to ensure that you learn and understand #HTML and use all it has to offer. It is critical that you familiarise yourself with the web content #accessibility guidelines (WCAG) and when and how to use ARIA(Accessible Rich Internet Applications). Over and above it all, take the time to consider how your choices might be excluding the very people who could benefit from the service, website, or application you are..."
