@lorry@infosec.exchange @cstross@wandering.shop I’ve got a simulated KS10 running DECwar… in a Raspberry pi. Which is also running a couple of VAXen and maybe an IBM mainframe or two…

Replying to
@aachrisg @javerous @drikanis @ludicity not the same. Using a search engine is basically having optimized documentation. I learnt the trade ‘fighting’ with the old ‘wall of paper’ of DEC orange binders with VAX/VMS documentation. Being able to search for them was a blessing.

@grrlscientist@mastodon.social @cstross@wandering.shop well, teshnikally this is correct, Charles is King of Australia. Heck, they could have raised the Canadian flag and it would be still teshnikally correct… and a little bit hilarious

Replying to
@Reinald@nrw.social @esoastronomy@mastodon.social same here. What is really mind blowing is the image processing technology allows me to capture images close to those from Palomar with a 6 inch SCT paired with a photographic sensor plus some neat processing tricks.

@cstross @sundogplanets yeah, that’s the definition and found a few of them when I trolled flat earthers as a hobby. The thing is written media, specially ‘short’ written media does not give a lot of hints about intention.

@tsturm @cstross I’m in basically the same situation, plus getting a weekly email reminding me I have not activated my copilot pro license. If you have the option to simply ignore those polls, it could be the best strategy. I

@KraftTea @cstross I wonder how ww2 style fighters will do against shahed type drones. Maybe a wing of spitfires, mustangs or 109s could erase those things out of the sky.

@sharlatan@mastodon.social for deep space, I use siril. For planetary, registax. But I have the hobby on hold… haven’t had a good session in the last 2 years. I’m getting lazy and I’ll probably get a robo-scope -vaonis or seestar- to do the work for me.

Replying to
@sundogplanets @cstross please don’t take this as sealioning (it _could_ be something a sealion would ask, but believe me, this is not my intention) Where is the limit of ‘honest asking’ or ‘honest trying to explain’ to ‘sealioning’ or ‘mainaplaining’!

Replying to
@503bartley @cstross @KraftTea like in wwii early detection is probably key. If you know the shaheds are coming you could deploy either propeller fighters or even an Hercules gunship with multiple radar or laser controlled guns to wipe out the drones. Jet propelled ones are a different story though. Even being cheaper than a proper cruise missile they are not so cheap and easy to build as a shahed. Jet engines are much harder to make than reciprocating ones.

Replying to
@cstross @hypolite @KraftTea yeah, but I understand the appeal of Sahed type drones is they are cheap to make: they use a motorcycle style engine which has to run just one time, so no worries about durability etc.

@cstross@wandering.shop can add some comedy to the scene. C3PO is based on a LLM and instead of stopping the wall he accelerates them, with the usual ‘you are absolutely right, of course’ dropped by the dumbbots every time Trump tries to rephrase the ‘stop this damn thing’ order.

@cstross@wandering.shop uh, the proverbial Chinese room output was supposed to be based on rules. The LLMs are just an hyper inflated (non totally) linear regressor. The Searle’s Chinese room was closer to intelligence than the LLMs.

@rogerb@mastodon.scot @angusm@mastodon.social @cstross@wandering.shop I remember that situation being part of a novel setup. Can’t remember the title, I think it was a late A.C. Clarke work. The UK governor used the title of ‘prime minister’ though.

@TheTearMiser@mastodon.social @iinavpov@mastodon.online @nixCraft@mastodon.social no, mid term there will be a breakthrough in AI research that will shelve LLMs as a bad start. LLMs are a brute force solution, basically a cul de sac.
