"no politics" is a political statement. It's the statement that says "I'm comfortable with the current political landscape and I don't feel like getting it changed".

EV charging is not confusing at all. There are types, levels, and modes. I used to have cables for type 1 level 1 mode 2, type 1 level 2 mode 2, type 1 level 2 mode 3. I will need cables for type 2 level 1 mode 2, type 2 level 2 mode 2, and type 2 level 2 mode 3. Level can be 1, 2, 3. Mode can be 2, 3, 4. Type can be 1, 2, J1772-2001, CHAdeMO, CCS1, CCS2, NACS. Not confusing at all.

Initial development isn't the most expensive part of software engineering. Maintenance is. Cutting corners in initial development results in a larger increase in maintenance cost.

Writing code isn't the most expensive part of initial development. Refining the requirements, designing, documenting, writing tests, and reviewing are more expensive that writing code. Cutting corners in those results in a larger increase in initial development and maintenance costs.

This is a post about vibe coding.

Ski (the mostly white cat in the back) has a hard time with other cats. She likes her alone quiet time. When Mandalena died, Ski was devastated, since Mandalena knew to respect Ski's space.

Now, after two months with only the two of them in the house (down from a peak of 8), Ski and Buffy are getting along well, playing together, grooming each other, sleeping together. We're happy for them.

Paul Dukas used agentic AI to write code in the late 19th century, had to get a senior engineer to clean up after a massive incident, and his most popular composition "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is a cautionary tale against unleashing technology that you don't master.

(Not quite microfiction, but very loosely inspired by the genre)

RE: @workchronicles@mastodon.social

A 4-panel comic, with a manager in a suit and an engineer sitting at a desk with a laptop on the desk.
1) M: "I asked another engineer for his estimate of the effort"
2) M: "His estimate was one week less than yours"
3) E: "Then why don't you get him to do the project?"
4) M: "He never completes anything on time"

I've been in a job like that, yeah.

@rysiek@mstdn.social I like how the French constitution frames freedom as the right to do things that do not hurt others. That implies that there's no such thing as an absolute freedom.

RE: @eugenialoli@mastodon.social

The cat distribution system put Noonie in our path (or us in hers). She was in such a bad shape that the vet couldn't believe that she was alive at all, and gave her at most hours to live.

We took care of her, and she got to live another 4 1/2 months.

That was as big a miracle as we could hope for. Late last week, she stopped eating and drinking, and it was clear to everyone that she was on a path with no way back and that she was in tremendous pain. Her body is buried in the back of our yard.

-Fork a major Open Source project for a narrow purpose
-Upstream doesn't accept your contributions because they want to support the broad case, not just your narrow one.
-Don't keep your fork updated with upstream.
-The project you forked depends on python
-Python breaks compatibility with the version you forked.
-Now your fork doesn't build.

2022: we buy a house that has potential for a large art studio.
2024: we move into that house.
2026: we start construction on the actual art studio (literally 2 days ago).

There's a good chance we'll have it completed by the end of the year, I'm crossing fingers that we reach a specific milestone by mid-summer.

Yeah, it's easy to shit on Amazon when you have plenty of alternatives. But, when you don't, Amazon is a godsend. I know, because I now have neither Amazon nor alternatives and it fucking sucks.

@Kroc The ST hardware is documented more than enough that you can shut the OS up and do everything yourself. That's especially true now that there's been a lot of work to make emulators behave like the real thing, which requires a lot of precise reverse-engineering.

@ashleygjovik My impression of Apple is that it's not a great engineering company, but it's a company that has great engineers. The difference being, in my perception, that the company doesn't manage to get consistently great engineers in all areas of its products.

@gloriouscow@oldbytes.space The one thing you can't get wrong is the frequency of the color burst and color subcarrier. 315/88 MHz. There's some flexibility over the rest, most TVs will readily accept lines between 226 and 229 subcarrier periods, and frames don't need to have the exact line count at all. I can't put my hands on it right now, there's a list somewhere of the number of lines in different Atari 2600 games (where it's controlled in pure software), it varies quite wildly.

10 minutes on the 5090 uses as much transistor time as a lifetime on the 7800. That's wall time, I'm not even scaling for the difference in clock speed.

I'm giving myself one last week to clear up the space where we will be building our arts and crafts studio. In a week, if there are still a few things left in there that get covered in construction dust, it'll be on me to clean things up.

(spoiler alert: most of what's left in there is either reasonably dust-proof or still covered in construction dust from the previous phase).

We need to get everything ready by mid-August at the very latest. It's a tight schedule.

@syphist@zoner.work Most people creating such systems are having a hard enough time getting something that works at all for the intended use case that they don't have the mental capacity to investigate what happens when their system doesn't work. For better or worse, the world of software is a deades ahead, but putting software into everything doesn't make everyone an experienced software engineer. @vogelchr@chaos.social
