@gsuberland@chaos.social I've had to unsubscribe from so many subreddits and RSS feeds because they just became promotion grounds for someone's completely vibecoded home network dashboard or whatever

another example is that from taking apart my vacuum cleaner for servicing a couple of weeks ago, I learned how cyclones worked
this has immediately come in useful when looking at dust collection for wood sanding since it's literally the same problem scaled up and meant I can combine a more reasonable vacuum (including my household one using an adapter) with a bucket and a printed cyclone :D

listening to the same set every day is kinda goated for the routine though. I don't have to look at a clock to know what I should be doing, I can now tell if I'm ahead or behind schedule by which song is playing
I know that if I haven't brushed my teeth by a certain drop, I am not making my intended commute train

@erincandescent@akko.erincandescent.net oh this is a relatively safe bet given that I’ve still got bits of “I’m upping my p(doom)” stuck in my head from hearing it nearly two weeks ago

people really do have no idea how to respond to a person saying “you're right, I should not have done that and in retrospect it was not the right move. can I walk you through the problem I was trying to solve here and get some input?”, huh

has anyone ever found a real use for service workers in browsers that isn't just causing persistent battery drain for no obvious gain? [rhetorical question]
x dot com has a bug in a service worker it runs when you visit the site where it will repeatedly make requests for an incomprehensible cloudflare-hosted URL in a way that persists browser restarts and is completely undiagnosable without enabling developer options. only noticed because my MacBook Air has been warm all day

people often focus way too much on the physicality of intimacy and completely miss the emotional, psychological, or even spiritual aspects of it
still trying to Be Something, rather than seeing that they Already Are

TURNS OUT that if you signal the things you need help with around good people and a willingness to receive that help, they offer to help you??
truly wild concept

one of these days I would love to do a public talk about what visa and mastercard *actually* do and how we got here
I keep looking at people having Takes on my industry and while their heart rounds to being in the right place, there is a fascinating world of complexities in the mechanics of financial systems to solve if you ever want to replace them

I think one of my favourite lecture series so far has been a stanford one on behavioural biology, which has at the start the lecturer asking the class “how many people believe in free will? …that's going to change” :p

I am every single month amused at how many banking and finance management apps are incapable of understanding that people might actually work for a company that also accepts payments at their retail and online stores, so send notifications like “[amount] refund from [employer]”
