@david_chisnall I 100% agree, and this even just leaves out the rug pull. There's always a rug pull. Either they will make it way more expensive, they will figure out some way where you have to keep paying to have access to stuff "your" LLM made in the past, or maybe it'll just be full of ads. Regardless, the idea that as free software advocates we should now just start trusting propriety software to work in our best interests is... A choice.

It's always best to, when you create debug messages, show them to your users.

That way your users don't have to GUESS whether you give a shit or not!

@atax1a@infosec.exchange @dieweltist@bunt.social I'm only addressing the point that free software people, like myself, are being hypocritical about LLMs. Telling everyone who wants to write software to a) pay monthly to access proprietary software b) download and install non-free software locally to work with the SaaS software Is pretty much exactly the opposite of what we ever wanted computing to be.

@david_chisnall Absolutely! I thought it would be good to make your implication explicit, because a lot of people reading this will, for some reason, have a really uncritical opinion of big tech companies. I think most people don't realize what Uber actually did.

An interesting result of how "cheap" words and code have become in the age of LLMs is that the Blaise Pascal quote "I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time." has gotten a whole new meaning. It used to be when I saw a PR with a long description it was an indication that someone spent a lot of time and thought on it. Now it means the opposite. #programming

@dieweltist@bunt.social if it were possible to train an LLM entirely locally or in such a way that the contents of the LLM are entirely inspectable and editable. And it was practically possible to run on a machine that people could reasonably have at home then I'll consider it not a problem from a free software ethics point of view. If the only PRACTICAL way for people to access the capability is by renting access to proprietary software on someone else's computer then it is not empowerment

@dieweltist@bunt.social yeah yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what people talk about. For all practical purposes using an LLM to "write code" is just renting a program. It's just SaaS.

The point is to be left with contributions who don't use ai, and those who use it in such a way that doesn't lead to slop. Arguing with people who are OBVIOUSLY using ai to generate all communication they send to the GitHub is a huge waste of time. I don't want to operate someone else's Claude code session and have them get a commit credit. That is what reviewing an AI generated PR is. It's pointless. AIs don't learn. It's ALWAYS faster to do it yourself. #aislop

@dieweltist@bunt.social I think that "A thing that can take a day on contemporary computers" vs "A thing that will take 5 months and takes a whole data center" are literally somewhat orders of magnitudes different. 😃 I think potentially it could be. Or at least in free software terms could be morally neutral. Which is really the only thing I'm trying to talk about right now.

Hello fellow #laserdisk and/or #electronics nerds. I bought a #pioneer CLD-2700 today for scrap pricing. It does not turn on, at all. No standby light, no nothing.

I found a suspiciously rusty looking screw in the psu area that looks suspiciously like electrolyte damage?

Can someone with a bit more experience than me weigh in? I'm pretty comfortable with soldering and such but I'm really not good with analogue electronics or power supplies.

Thanks!

@promovicz@chaos.social @dieweltist@bunt.social I'm really only addressing the "gotcha" Matthew posted. I don't think it's a gotcha at all. Telling people to rent access to proprietary software is exactly what we didn't want! The free software political stance on this is entirely coherent and unsurprising in my opinion. Whether anyone, (or Matthew), agrees with the politics is an entirely different thing. But it's certainly not a gotcha about our ethos!

@peterb@mathstodon.xyz @promovicz@chaos.social @dieweltist@bunt.social in that hypothetical, probably yes. But it's not just that software in this case, I'd say that it is the model itself as well. The model is functionally indistinguishable from bytecode for some kind of VM. But as far as the actual thing I was talking about; that is NOT what basically anyone who uses these models talks about. *Today*, suggesting that LLMs are some kind of "implementation" of the free software goals, while it is still all SaaS is just wrong.

@vadim@m.vrutkovs.eu @poni@ak.kawen.space Have you ever heard about free software? Paying for Office 365 isn't an alternative to running your own mail server. Running Windows isn't an alternative to GNU If you think it is, that is fine! You don't have to agree, but that simply means you don't think software freedom is important. Which is also fine. But don't tell me that I don't understand what I believe.
