I love playing board games and am a big fan of everything Pokemon. I'm a passionate community builder. I'm a leftist and a feminist.

I spend my evenings building @turkufrontend@tivia.social and @archipylago@mementomori.social.

I write a blog, a newsletter, notes and zines to express myself and share what I learn.

This is super cool: Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle has published a ton of audio effects with a good permissive license.

The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle is Finland's public broadcaster and holds a large audiovisual archive. The archives also contain a great amount of sound effects which have been recorded during the last 70 years using various techniques.

I've been going to movies a lot lately as I have a bunch of free tickets. The movie theater experience is supposed to be a great experience — that's what you pay for. But watching 15+ minutes of ads and being limited to over expensive snacks (or sneaking in your own) is just not a great experience compared to watching movies at home. https://hamatti.org/posts/im-not-a-big-fan-of-movie-theater-experience/ #blogging #movies

I’m not a big fan of movie theater experience

Tickets and snacks are expensive, ads are annoying and viewing experience isn’t better enough to warrant the negatives.

Three weeks ago, I wrote a little shell script to connect and disconnect my headphones because I got annoyed by having to find right icons and items from the menu bar. (https://notes.hamatti.org/technology/recipes/connecting-my-bluetooth-headphones-with-shell-command) I had no idea it would be this impactful. My quality of life using headphones with my laptop when out and about increased significantly. All with less than 100 lines of code.

Last night, 21.02 I got a message in our Magic group: "Does your proxy printer support bulk import from Moxfield?" It didn't. 26 minutes later, it did. And today I've been adding a bunch of fun new features too like changing individual arts and supporting more import formats. It was a fun weekend coding.

In 2013, I won a ticket to Strata conference in Santa Clara and a bunch of my data science heroes were speaking there. One of them was Monica Rogati who talked about sleep data they had been gathering. It was a fsntastic talk so I went to chat with her right afterwards. I was so nervous I don't think I got a single coherent word of English out of my mouth. She handled it like a champion though.

I borrowed this book from library today and I love it. It's a reference book for a ton of different mechanics in board games. It explains the mechanics very well, lists examples of games that use them and give pros, cons and considerations for all of them. It does make a few weird judgements here and there that I found odd but other than those, it's a reference book that I'm planning to add to my bookshelf permanently in the future. #BoardGames #GameDesign #Books

g is for get_or_create Django's get_or_create is great. It lets you search for something in the database and craete it if it didn't exist. It's such a great tool for things like data entry and makes the code nice and easy to read and follow. https://hamatti.org/posts/g-is-for-get-or-create-python-a-to-z/ #Python #Django #Blaugust #Blaugust2026

G is for get_or_create - Python A to Z

Django’s ORM has a neat shorthand for when you’re creating new objects in the database but some might already exist and you want to reuse them rather than always create new ones. QuerySet’s get_or_create does all that on a single line.

41 different keywords are written on the cards in my Magic the Gathering Battle Box. I can maybe remember how 5 of them work and my friends who play even less than I do, might not even that many. So I compiled a reference guide to help.

I wrote a keyword reference guide to my Magic Battle Box and had to make my own logos and icons to keep it above the line. I was bit sad in the beginning but the more I look at this cover, the more I start to like its campy "similar but legally distinctive" style. It's a shame that the WotC's Fan Content Policy doesn't allow using mana symbols. #MagicTheGathering #MTG

Validate your incoming JSON data with Pydantic to make sure it behaves. As a bonus, you can modify the data at the same time to parse it into a format that's most useful to your program. https://hamatti.org/posts/j-is-for-json-validation-python-a-to-z/ #Python #Blaugust #Blaugust2026

After reading the excellent Spider-Man: Life Story, I picked up Fantastic Four: Life Story which was unfortunately a disappointment. For Spider-Man, growing up from a teenager to adulthood was a much stronger motif and more interesting setting and Fantastic Four felt just like a regular story of the battle against Galactus. Maybe if I had read it before I heard about Spider-Man, I would have enjoyed it more but I can't ignore the differences now. https://notes.hamatti.org/sources/books/fantastic-four-life-story #Marvel #Comics

In January, I finally made my first zine and Roll the Zine – a board and card game fanzine — was born. Yesterday's panel discussion about zines at #Finncon got me thinking about the hobby so I wrote down some initial thoughts after the first 7 months. https://hamatti.org/posts/thoughts-on-making-zines-after-7-months/ #zine #RollTheZine #blogging #blog #BoardGames

Thoughts on making zines after 7 months

I have been inspired by zines for years but it took until this January to start making my own. Roll the Zine is a board and card game zine that publishes every now and then. In this blog post, I talk about my journey, ideas and inspiration.

In a good world, this would have a potential to be a good thing: less discs created in the world. However, in the current world, this just means that Sony and/or the game developers have more power to decide that the game you purchased won't be available to you anymore and pull it from your library or make it impossible to re-download. So much of modern gaming won't be available in the future in a way that 90s and early 2000s games are today. It makes me very sad. https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/physical-disc-production-ending-in-january-2028-for-new-games-releasing-on-playstation-consoles/

@damien@layer8.space Imagine you have a Bread model and it has a ForeignKey to a BreadType. Then you have a data input of 100 breads of variying BreadTypes. When you go through the list, you'll want to create new BreadTypes for ones that don't yet exist and reference the ones that already do. You don't have to create separate conditional branches to first check if a BreadType exists or not. Does that help?

I really should answer cold emails at least to check if there’s a real human behind them 😔

Every now and then I try doing this and 99% of the time they just lead to worse results than ignoring.

People take a polite answer — even if just a "thanks but no" — as a permission to keep pestering.

I wanna keep my hopes with humanity up but if it feels like a duck, it's likely a duck and I'll keep ignoring them.

Haven't gotten one about this though.
