@liaizon@social.wake.st honestly, the responses you linked the other day were endlessly puzzling to me – how in the world do you, of your own free will, make your open source initiative use a service linked to thiel and palantir? how is this something that required ‘news breaking’ to understand, or something a post bein gdrafted could solve? those names come up and you turn the other way and say ‘fuck no.’ this is like putting up swastika wallpaper thinking it’s going to be fine, you can also sit in the closet where we didn’t put it up.

@leah word! and regarding this not coming out of left field in the larger tech sphere: i remember someone recently writing that tech, unlike nearly every other field, is really low on having a core set of stable points of view that are informed by what the field is about. i.e. tech, as a field, is prone to run after the next best hype. and that sure as hell rang very very true. now add to that the base problems (emotional maturity, sexism, general adjustedness) of so many men in tech(tm), and that LLMs are good at presenting a convincing surface appearance? yeah, nothing about this should come as much of a surprise. but it’s infuriating that it’s so obvious and still, so many blokes don’t realise the degree of bullshit they’re engaging in.

@Theotime812 @Kiki +1 to rhodia – i like their paper a lot. while i managed to avoid the big paper quality problems some fountain pen folks have reported with leuchtturm, i do remain a bit miffed that once you have even middlingly specific demands, there’s often only one product. (case in point: rhodia doesn’t have something to compete with leuchtturm’s softcover b6-ish notebooks, that fits one of my use cases perfectly) i.e., if one manufacturer drops quality, you’re out of luck.

@b0rk not strictly what you asked for, but i have been at a similar point multiple times – wondering whether it wouldn’t be cool to build such a palette myself, for my own use. straddling the genericity to whip something up quickly, with the speed you get from reduced choice, and the sum of these somethings still carrying an overall fingerprint of my ideas and predilections when it comes to colour. after all, if there’s a need to not have that, i can always fine tune it away later. and if there’s no need to, there’s no harm in it looking ‘mine’.

@baldur uuuugh, when i saw your original post, i had three quarters of a reply already typed out (and deleted before sending) how disappointing and shallow the usual reactions to these posts are: ‘wah wah government overreach’ (elementary school level political theory) or ‘wah wah stifling innovation the chinese can’t invent anything on their own’ (elementary school level racism) or ‘but xinjiang’ (elementary school level evasion). not even the attempt to clear the lowest bar before running your mouth: trying to imagine what such a decision nets them in their own context. i.e. what does this look like to chinese citizens. one (1) bonus point for ‘does this fit in a larger pattern?’

@bahnkundenv @stefanmuelller gut auf den punkt gebracht. ich sehe ja sehr gerne mehr und bessere angebote fuer die bahn, vor allem auch ein deutschlandticket das fuer mehr als nur pendler interessant ist. aber hier im 1000-seelen-dorf mit bundesstrasse durch macht das null komma garnix an unterschied. der naechste bahnhof ist eine 10km-fahrt weg (dort gibts nur IR und RE). busse fahren zur besten zeit einmal die stunde. weder die bahn, noch der weg zu ihr, sind preislich auch nur in der naehe davon, konkurrenzfaehig zu sein. von der praktikabilitaet ganz zu schweigen.
